Tried the red two times. The restaurant allows you to order food as usual, or you can do the 1.5-hour hotpot. I tried it two times with my friends. For the first time we ordered some fish, napa cabbage and rice cake with meat stir fry. Food was just standard. Serving size was huge however. The rice cake dish was indeed too salty. Next time I took my Japanese friend there hoping to experience some Chinese hotpot culture. The service waiter said we could only grab food for 1.5 hours, unfortunately it turned out that we must leave after 1.5 hours, and if there's something we haven't finished we need to pay extra. Very confusing and upsetting rules. Besides the hotpot cooked food slowly so we did not have the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of food. So in general the restaurant is just so so. I am thrilled to share my 4th review of Kung Fu BBQ, Champaign's best restaurant. The meats, the broths, the sauces, the complimentary drinks- this was one of the most exquisite dining experiences I've ever had. Actually, all of my previous "most exquisite dining experiences" were also at Kung Fu BBQ. As usual, Kung Fu BBQ, and its exceptional owner, Helen, have set the bar impossibly high. I ordered the excellent Half & Half Pot (Original-Spicy), and I was informed this broth had just the right amount of heat by my dining partners (Will M. and Mia). I also treated myself to: The Sliced Fatty Beef, NZ Prime-Aged Lamb, and the Kurobura Pork. THESE MEATS ARE TOP QUALITY and melted in my mouth following sufficient bathing time in the bubbling broth. To make my meal (which remained within the 100 minute time limit, as it is very reasonable) even more memorable, I enjoyed the Quail Eggs and Imitation Crab sticks. We also ordered the rice which I was informed was perfect in soaking up all the savory sauces. Did I mention the sauces? Helen graciously offered to make our table the house dipping sauce, free of charge! I challenge anyone to find a more dedicated restaurateur, I doubt you will. Helen is the epitome of a gracious host, and she went above and beyond to ensure we had an unforgettable dining experience. She actually took the time to chat with us about her restaurant and its practices,. Her attention to detail was evident in the high-quality service, and the staff, as usual. First time trying a chinese/ korean buffet style bbq/ hot pot restaurant. I thought the gestures was nice, but the quality of the food was lacking. The minimal amount of ban chan (side dishes) was ... a disappointment. Not only was there only 4 small plates of ban chan, all of them was extremely salty. Hard to swallow salty i mean a mouthful of salt. I even told the cashier/ server it was too salty. The beef brisket was fatty and bland. The other marinated bulgogi was ok. This was a very mediocre place. And the other sad part. They raised their price from 22.99 to 25.99 ... for "not so 25.99" good quality food. The service was ok, they were quick enough to come help us and refill the salty kimchi. Maybe its a plot to get ppl to stop eatin haha idk. But if they want more customers theyre gona have to step up the food quality. The shrimp i ordered, was not fresh. The meat was very soft and fell apart, i told them it wasnt fresh at all. She said to cook it longer lol. Well... cooking it longer will just burn the shell and the meat will still fall apart. I don't recommend the shrimp due to this. Wow. So much can change over 5 years. 5 years ago when I posted my first review for this restaurant, I praised their BBQ and reasonable 100 minute time limit. A graduation, a global pandemic and president later, and much has changed about Kung Fu BBQ, but one thing hasn't changed: excellence. When some people think about excellence in restaurants, they think of Michelin Stars or "Iron" Chefs. I think of Helen, who may or may not be the owner of the restaurant, but is certainly the owner of my heart. She goes out of her way to make sure that customers have everything they need and then some to enjoy a delicious all you can eat meal with in the extremely reasonable 90 minute time limit. While they no longer do all you can eat BBQ, they do offer all you can eat hot pot, a meal that is as delicious with possibly more nutritional benefits. As usual, Helen prepared our dipping sauces herself and they were to die for. Helen, if you ever read this, the debt I owe to you cannot be paid off simply by the cost of the all you can eat meal. They say America is a melting pot, but I say that Americans like myself often accidentally add too many ingredients into their hot pot and watch as they melt into the broth over the course of your meal because you are too focused on your meat to fish out a sprout or bok choy. Add veggies, and noodles as you want to eat them! Speaking of fish, the cuttlefish are very good. Their texture is similar to that of octopus! Worth a shot. We had good experiences here! The restaurant is easily my new favorite in town. Their food is decent , the price is reasonable, and the staff were friendly! The all-you-can Korean BBQ is a good deal. You can choose from 9 different kinds of beef, pork, chicken, and seafood. You can also have unlimited veggies (mushroom, sweet potato, garlic, green onion, lettuce) to eat with the meat. You can also help yourself with soup and dipping sauces. The service can be slow during peak time. You need to raise your hands and signal the waiters whenever you need your pan changed, or need pickled vegetables. It's a shame they stopped serving us pickled vegetables (kimchi and such) after we asked for 3rd refills but we understood :/ (their pickle veggie dish had such a small portion btw, like literally one-chopstick portion). We also ordered some other Shanghainess dishes and they were so good!!!! I also got the Qingtuan (the owner called it Chinese Mochi cake lol) and it was very good! Overall it was a great experience. This place is REALLY GOOD. I will admit, when I called to make my to-go order without a full menu in front of me I was nervous. The owner of the restaurant took my order and was very nice. We wanted soup dumplings and also a Chinese "beef dish". We didn't have a menu so we asked her what items they had. She asked how much "gravy" we wanted. I'm not used to that question with Chinese food. We usually get the typical American versions like "beef and broccoli" "sweet and sour chicken"... stuff like that. She explained that the beef dish is Like a stew with vegetables and beef served with rice. We decided to go for it. Soup Dumplings- AMAZING. Hand made in the restaurant, not defrosted like most places. Beef (and gravy dish... I forget the exact name)- THE BEST IN OUR LIVES. We are NEVER ordering typical American style Chinese food again. They ended up charging me for hotpot for two people, even though I didn't eat any. I even had to correct them when they tried charging me for 3 people. Very authentic and delicious Chinese food, great service and reasonable prices. I highly recommend the Chinese menu from this place! They've got a lot of Chinese street food such as 小笼包，牛肉卷饼，生煎包子，煎饼果子，粽子。 They also have an extensive menu of Shanghai and Sichuan dishes. We ordered a little bit of everything and I think the street food was the best. The other Shanghai and sichuan dishes were all a bit too salty. The dish that stood out the most were the 生煎包子, pan fried baozi. They were crispy on the outside since they were pan-fried but soooo soft and fluffy like a normal baozi. And the filling was so juicy!! Imagine a soup dumplin but in a baozi. There is probably a huge spoonful of soup in the baozi. I also really appreciated their 煎饼果子, chinese crepes. They were very thin! But I wish they had more sauce in the crepe. The 牛肉卷饼 could have used much more meat inside, but it was still tasty. Also try the 牙签羊肉, toothpick lamb! It's chunks of lamb meat served on toothpicks. It's got a great cumin flavor and reminds me of the Chinese barbecues back in China. Service was also very good. The food came our really quickly even though we ordered a lot and everyone was very friendly. The owner came and spoke with my parents for a long time and made sure everything tasted delicious. I love this place, although I don't go for the all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ or hot pot deals. These are both fine, but the strengths of Kung Fu BBQ lie in their Shanghai-style dishes. I hear the manager/owner(?) speaking Shanghainese, so I assume their chef is a specialist in those dishes. That portion of the menu is absolutely amazing. I'm also a huge fan of the spicy boiled fish (more of a Sichuan-style preparation). It's filled with a rich flavor and plenty of spice. I've seen a lot of reviews complaining about the service, and I can understand why. If you're not used to restaurants that operate like this (more common in China, from what I understand), you'll feel ignored and frustrated. Basically, the manager/owner is the only one who takes orders for the entire place. She gets to your table when she gets to you. You may need to wait a bit. There are waiters who bring water and plates, but I've not seen any of them who really speak English much at all. Also, they include an automatic 15% gratuity. I'm told this is common in Chinese restaurants. It's just one of those things you have to accept if you're going to eat the delicious food. Ultimately, know that you're not being ignored or disrespected. You just have to wait. If you're in a hurry or you want a lot of attention from your waitstaff, go to an American restaurant where the waitress writes her name on a disposable napkin along with a smily face and some hearts. If you want to eat some amazing Shanghainese dishes, go to Kung Fu BBQ and be patient. (Also, it helps if you can go with someone fluent in Mandarin ...). Finally, I will say that many of these dishes rivaled the food I ate when I visited Shanghai. I know this place has been open a while and honestly I was pretty skeptical about coming in because I was hearing mostly negative things. My experience when I came in for dinner was positive. I think they may have changed things up. Originally I heard a lot of complaints about prices and quality but I thought both were superb. I came in at 7pm on a Wednesday with 6 people and we got seated super quickly because the place was pretty empty. We all got all you can eat BBQ. Service: 5/5 I don't tend to dish out high service grades but the servers were attentive and friendly. The man helping with our table was always really prompt about meat orders. He changed the grill without us asking him too and refilled water often. The server didn't hover but was always around when we needed something. Also, they ran out of sesame balls. Setup: 5/5 The majority of the condiments lived in a center console sort of "buffet style". They had a wide variety of choices of dipping sauces and veggies. They also had pork bun, cookies, oranges, and some other small dim sum like items. Everything else was brought to your table by the server. I like the high quality grills they had. Usually after kbbq my clothes smell like grease but the fan was super powerful and I largely avoided that. Atmosphere: 4.5/5 The decor was nice and all the tables and chairs were high quality. The only fault I could mention is how empty it is but honestly I just think it's a shame that more people don't come in. The place was also super clean. Occasionally when the server changed our grill, he just carried the grill plate back to the kitchen while dripping oil on the floor so that could be a point of improvement. Food: 5/5 I liked all the items we tried. The most important thing to me was that the meat WASN'T frozen when it got to our table. It was a mix of defrosted and fresh and this made such a big difference. The flavors were great and the meat was good quality. They also had a great variety of meats as well. We had people who are kbbq vets who said it was as good if not better than some of the popular places in Korea and California. The items in the buffet condiments area was good as well. I liked that I could self serve lettuce, yams, sauce, etc rather than having to wait for someone else to get it for me. Also, the cookies in the center console were absolutely amazing. The buns were also really good but oddly crispy on the bottom. They also had sesame balls but they ran out. Quality: 4/5 Great quality food. The meat was superb. Came back here to try the BBQ and the hot pot which were both all you can eat. The food is definitely not fresh, and I felt really sick after eating the hot pot. Aside from the poor quality food, the owners' attitude is really upsetting me. They act like they're superior and kept on "teaching" me how to correctly eat Korean BBQ and hotpot. The guy wouldn't let me change my grill until it is completely dark covered with meat stains; clearly, they don't care about your health, only how much water and energy they have to spend washing those grills. When I told them I would like order some shrimp, they refused because I wasn't done with the other meats on the table even when we told them we will finish everything. Had the hot pot today, even more upsetting. It took more than 20 minutes for them to cut some meat for us. We had 6 people, the gave us enough for 2 people. So immediately, we wanted to place another order so our food would arrive right after we finish the first round. But the woman owner said no. When the second round of food arrived, we asked for our hot pot to be refilled with more soup. The server said ok but never came back. Then, the owner came and started saying to us:" you have all these meats here becoming room temp yet you are not eating it because you are still eating first round food". There were three of us and each of the sides were enough for just 1 person to enjoy. Server gave attitude when asking for refills for the side dishes. The reason for 2 stars? The service. Just terrible. The main lady/manager/cashier was nice enough but hard to track down for help. They had very nice selection of beef, pork, and shrimp/octopus for all you can eat. It's pretty good price too. Total was $28.55 including tax and tip for all you can eat. The beef and pork is a bit bland without sauce but they have sauce (soy, chili, and hoison). The marinated beef and pork is delicious. They did give us more fat at the end. Very good service and constantly check up on us. We did have a bit of wait in the beginning for us ordering. Lady was very nice telling us about the menu choices and everything. Came with a hungry party of 7 people and was greeted and seated without a problem. There were 2 other tables at the restaurant during the time, so it wasn't busy. The staff was quick in changing our grill after a round or two and the meat was averagely flavored. The overall restaurant was clean and the atmosphere was welcoming. The owner was nice. My main complaints: -The portions of meat (limit 3 plates per round) was very small -The time limit of 100 minutes was not enough time to get your money's worth, especially with the slow service -The staff was out of sight and wasn't attentive to our table when we needed more food -We specifically asked for 3 plates of the same meat but we were given only 1. We finished the meat in under a minute after cooking...We made sure we finished all the meat before we asked for more, so we weren't being unreasonable in terms of that. Upon leaving, we voiced our concern to the owner about the reason why we got so little meat on the plate every round even when we specifically asked for more and showed that we could eat a lot...her response was that in her experience, guests ask for a lot of meat but don't end up finishing and end up getting charged for the unfinished food. They will be releasing a cheaper menu soon that will be more affordable for everyone to enjoy. They also have a menu for single dish items that you can order for lunch or so. For those of you who haven't eaten all you can eat bbq, theres a grill in the center and you cook your own meat. They also have the bomb shanghainese dumplings with great soup inside. I read other reviews about having soup in the dumplings and it is supposed to be like that!! Comparable to Din Tai Fung. Great place, decent service, and a great management. They have all you can eat BBQ but I definitely recommend their Shanghainese specialty dishes that they have a la cart. Give them a try! We recently moved from NYC to UC and there were a lot of good Shanghainese restaurants in NYC but Kung Fu still ranks very high. However I do think the owner needs to work better on their marketing and advertising because it's very hard to tell they sell Shanghainese food because of all those vents for the BBQ. read more

Kung Fu BBQ is definitely the place to go on campus for Korean barbecue and Chinese buns. Their buns and xiao long bao are very authentic (and have steaming soup in them AS THEY SHOULD!!) The raw meat was fresh and well-seasoned. Overall, great atmosphere and hands down some of the most authentic Korean and Chinese cuisine in the CU area. The owners were very sweet. Service may be a bit slower because it is a newer business and the whole restaurant is pretty big. Definitely recommend to anyone craving Asian food and looking to fill up for dinner. read more

After my first visit I learned that you get more of your money's worth going with an All-You-Can-Eat option for $22.99/person. The food here is always good. I usually go for the soup dumplings or Korean bbq which is always delicious. The service however, is always quite bad. Service is slow. Food doesn't come out together. Korean bbq orders arrive very slowly. We didn't get menus until 15 minutes after we arrived and we had empty cups of water for 15 minutes before we could flag someone down to get more. Out of 5 orders, one too 20 minutes to arrive and the last order came out 20 minutes after the first. When we brought it up upon check out, we were met with excuses, not an apology. At 7:55pm when we requested meat, the pushy women manager came telling us we have run out of time. She then turned the heat to the maximum and put all the remaining meat into the oven. Before the meat was done, she distributed the raw meat to our plates and kept compalining we were too slow cooking. She even compared us with other cusomers who were said to be able to finish eating quickly. I was totally shocked and extremely angry at that moment. If you cannot afford it don't run the business. A paper menu with just names and prices, no pictures, no descriptions, not helpful for a newbie. I ordered the chicken dish. I got a hunk of cold chicken on the bone; that's it, no sides - no rice or vegetables. And apparently it's one menu for lunch or dinner. Paid dinner prices at lunch. They need some lunch specials that are a complete meal. Not worth the price. I ate about half of it; wish I hadn't eaten that much. Fortunately my friend ordered other items and shared. Dumplings were tasty but little meat in them mostly dumpling. Took the rest home and saved it by cutting it up, adding it to sauteed vegetables, heating, and serving with rice. Food is good and we were pretty happy until the boss lady came to us and told us that we had been eating for too long (2 hrs as she claimed but one hr and half to the most, we believe) and should be full by then! I have only had the BBQ, and I think it is good, but this is meant to be a PSA about this restaurant's sneaky billing practices (hence only 3 stars). I think the menu price is reasonable but they are trying to charge twice for tip. I went two days in a row for lunch. The first time I got the $11.95 2-meat for one-person BBQ. The bill came out to $14.48 because there was an additional line item for a "service fee," which, when I asked about it, was told was the tip. So I only paid $14.48. The next day, I got the same lunch and when I received my bill, it was $14.48 without an itemized "service fee" and then there was another box for adding tip. I asked the cashier/waiter about it and he said I could just pay $14.48. So make sure to check your bill, do your own calculations, and don't pay tip twice! read more

Best Korean BBQ on campus. You can choose from an unlimited selection of angus beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, and octopus (and a lot of side dishes, too) all for only $28.55. This is the best soup dumpling (xiao long bao) place in town! Very very juicy and full of soup.. I am from Shanghai and this reminds me of the food I had when I was young. Barbeque is a little overpriced but wasn't too bad overall. Bottom line, Shanghainese will probably love the baozi and xiao long bao, because that's similar to how they're made in Shanghai; but that might not suit the taste of people from other places :) read more
