Follow that with the Best of the Beatles, a Beatles themed show that's been on the air for 25+ years. Next, the Hillbilly Hayride, where Hank Harrison spins the country and western hits of yesteryear. Next, the Blues Hour, which always makes me depressed. KSYM is incredible. They're always giving away tickets and albums. You can actually win these call in contests, because not as many people have discovered KSYM as opposed to one of those Clear Channel stations. It's great that they let the students pick the music. You can get some weird songs, but at least they're always fresh, and hip. I love you KSYM!

From their involvement in JazzAlive, the Rooftop Concert Series to their awesome jazz radio show that runs from morning, noon and night they communicate why jazz is still a vibrant and relevant artform. Whenever I listen to their Morning Session to the Jazz in the Afternoon I picture dudes with milk crates of vinyl cramming them into a small Volvo Station Wagon and heading toward the radio station. The wealth of the knowledge of all dj's, who do all the shows is infinitesimal. The gamut runs from traditional, big band, zydeco, dixieland, avant-garde, acid jazz and all points between. Which includes standards by Coltrane, Parker, Porter, Thelonius Monk, Getz, Jobim etc. But for me the enjoyment comes from when they reach into the deep cuts, whenever they play music from artists that I've never heard of before. I typically keep a notepad next to me so I can jot down the names of a cool song or an artist. Above all what I appreciate is hearing the dj's provide a historical context for some songs or artists. Which provides me an invaluable insight into the mindset or an individual's vision. KRTU 91.7 FM is passionate about jazz, therefore it is successful in sharing that passion with the rest of the city. If you're tired of the other radio stations that play the same song a million times in one hour, this station is a refreshing escape from that. More importantly if you love hearing jazz in a live setting check out the various events they post, sponsor and support. John Coltrane composed " A Love Supreme ", to convey his love for jazz as an art form. KRTU seems to be an aural representation of that.

Since it's a college station, they don't have to play nearly as many ads as the other stations do, and they have much greater control of the kinds of tunes that they play. They play a variety of jazz throughout the day. Nothing ever too crazy. In fact, this is the only station we all can agree on at work. They don't play the same ol' stuff day in and day out. If you tune in on the weekends or late night, they often deviate from the jazz, and play some of the students' favorite songs. It's a great station to find out what kinds of jazz-related events are going on around town. Turn in, turn on!

When Momma was in Assisted Living it was an absolute delight to have church youth groups sing Christmas Carols to everyone in her home! It just wouldn't be Christmas without Chrismtas songs. Sure, there are some lousy Christmas songs like "All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth" and another non favorite is "The Twelve Days of Christmas." "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" makes me cringe, as does "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause." These songs likely resonate with some. "Silent Night" is a favorite as is "Oh, Holy Night!" 14 Aug 2023 Since…read moreretirement, I look for volunteer opportunities. Owl Radio provides live and recorded radio broadcasts to those folks who are blind or otherwise visually-impaired. They access the broadcasts through a provided special receiver, the website or the Owl Radio app. I was trained today in the art of the live broadcast. There are two studios: one for live broadcasts, the other where recordings can be made and played later. Recordings can be of magazines, book reviews, sports, the topics can be endless. I observed and then they asked if I would read a couple of newspaper articles. Hell,yeah! The Express-News is read live from 9 - 11am. Prior to 9am, the team had already cut and divvied up the articles to the team members. A team of two reads the first hour, then a second team reads the second hour. I was with team two. These ladies have been a team for about four years, so, so I was learning from veterans. They alternate articles, so no one is reading constantly. I read the Heloise column and a San Antonio Story about a local teacher. It was a rush! Gerri actually stated on air that I was new and did a great job. Very humbling and appreciated. I am now an official live on-air substitute! I will do some recordings from home in the meantime. This is a very noble organization providing such a needed service. They go in,…read morebuy up all the radio stations, television stations, billboards, concert venues, etc. Then they go through and homogenize them to fit a formula on how to make the most money in a market, and strip the town's radio waves and television waves of any sense of individuality and character, and play the same handful of songs over and over and over and over. By allowing a company like Clear Channel to buy up so many media outlets in one market, they deprive the town's citizens of options on opinions and news. Instead, they are given the company's line and agenda. We are also deprived of local music, and talent.
