Follow that with the Best of the Beatles, a Beatles themed show that's been on the air for 25+ years. Next, the Hillbilly Hayride, where Hank Harrison spins the country and western hits of yesteryear. Next, the Blues Hour, which always makes me depressed. KSYM is incredible. They're always giving away tickets and albums. You can actually win these call in contests, because not as many people have discovered KSYM as opposed to one of those Clear Channel stations. It's great that they let the students pick the music. You can get some weird songs, but at least they're always fresh, and hip. I love you KSYM!

From their involvement in JazzAlive, the Rooftop Concert Series to their awesome jazz radio show that runs from morning, noon and night they communicate why jazz is still a vibrant and relevant artform. Whenever I listen to their Morning Session to the Jazz in the Afternoon I picture dudes with milk crates of vinyl cramming them into a small Volvo Station Wagon and heading toward the radio station. The wealth of the knowledge of all dj's, who do all the shows is infinitesimal. The gamut runs from traditional, big band, zydeco, dixieland, avant-garde, acid jazz and all points between. Which includes standards by Coltrane, Parker, Porter, Thelonius Monk, Getz, Jobim etc. But for me the enjoyment comes from when they reach into the deep cuts, whenever they play music from artists that I've never heard of before. I typically keep a notepad next to me so I can jot down the names of a cool song or an artist. Above all what I appreciate is hearing the dj's provide a historical context for some songs or artists. Which provides me an invaluable insight into the mindset or an individual's vision. KRTU 91.7 FM is passionate about jazz, therefore it is successful in sharing that passion with the rest of the city. If you're tired of the other radio stations that play the same song a million times in one hour, this station is a refreshing escape from that. More importantly if you love hearing jazz in a live setting check out the various events they post, sponsor and support. John Coltrane composed " A Love Supreme ", to convey his love for jazz as an art form. KRTU seems to be an aural representation of that.

Since it's a college station, they don't have to play nearly as many ads as the other stations do, and they have much greater control of the kinds of tunes that they play. They play a variety of jazz throughout the day. Nothing ever too crazy. In fact, this is the only station we all can agree on at work. They don't play the same ol' stuff day in and day out. If you tune in on the weekends or late night, they often deviate from the jazz, and play some of the students' favorite songs. It's a great station to find out what kinds of jazz-related events are going on around town. Turn in, turn on!

Aaargh! If I have to hear that Taylor Swift song again, I'm going to go postal. They play the same…read moreshort, short list of songs over and over and over and over and over again. Repeatedly. You hear the same song maybe 3-4 times throughout the day. Sometimes twice within the hour. The commercials are really obnoxious. The DJs aren't cool or funny or anything. I just really hate listening to the same thing on repeat. Nothing else going on. Just the same old pop garbage over and over and over and over. The call-in contests seem impossible to win, as there's so many people calling in, the phone circuits get overloaded!

My job as travel ambassador (tsk,tsk) often finds me transporting locals and visitors alike and since I don't think they would appreciate listening to Jim Rome, I put on Magic or Jack for their listening pleasure. When it comes to Magic they seem to be appealing to an audience with the attention span of a fourth grader with ADHD! I mean you can count the number of songs they play with a box of pre school flash cards! I don't want to go off on a rant but hearing songs from female singers who seem to all sound like Pink over and over again day in and day out is infuriating. I know these stations all have remote operations and are programmed digitally to ensure they never have to employ actual people but this is ridiculous. If I here one more Jason Mraz tune I am going to abandon my vehicle, strip off all of my clothes and run into the woods screaming.

My seek button landed me on KTXI 90.1 and I listened to Texas Public Radio for an hour or so today. Interesting discussions of local, state-wide and national news including some chat about the Starbucks in San Antonio voting to unionize (good luck!) and some local politicians taking both sides of the redistricting maps. Yo 95.1 This station needs to make up its mind…read more It used to be a country station, then became a Latin pop station called "La Kalle" then went to classic hip-hop (my favorite!) now it's just Latino Mix. Not Latina mix, not Latin-x mix, but Latino. They do mostly Latin hip-hop top 40. Think lots of Shakira and Pitbull. Ooooo weeeeee! The ads and the DJs are mostly in Spanish, with a whole lotta Spanglish thrown in there, and the occasional English for the call letters and station identifications. This station is wholly owned by Univision, the TV station. These DJs speak so quickly, I have a hard time keeping up with them sometimes. It's not really a Tejano station, more Latin Hip Hop.
