They never play…read morethe 60's music anymore, like The Beatles, Beach Boys, Mamma's & Pappa's, Johnny River's, Paul Simon, The list of artists & songs just goes on & on. I'm just going to say I don't enjoy it like I use to. That's the sad truth. In the 80's it was everything you could ask for. Now its changed forever. Its not real bad. They still got some good songs. But would you actually call something from the mid 80's or early 90's oldies? I wouldn't. Not quite. Loved Kono at one time. & still listen to it today. Just hoping to hear at least one of the songs I use to hear. & if they play any of those songs its mostly on the weekends when count down the greatest hits or whatever. It'll never be the same. I'm sorry to say.

My seek button landed me on KTXI 90.1 and I listened to Texas Public Radio for an hour or so today. Interesting discussions of local, state-wide and national news including some chat about the Starbucks in San Antonio voting to unionize (good luck!) and some local politicians taking both sides of the redistricting maps. Cherie Curie of The Runaways Sat 01 Nov 25 Meet and Greet Every staff member was awesome! Cherie was an hour late. I had a bus to catch to leave town. The two standing in line in front of me, and staff, all made sure I met Cherie first so I could rush out to catch my bus. The staff kept apologizing. And that's ok. She was lovely and accommodating. The new Univision studios are very nice compared to their previous location on Cesar Chavez in…read moredowntown. Despite the fact that their historic studio was torn down the new location is museumesque with artifacts, trophies and historic photos in the lobby. I'm glad to see them pay respect to their legacy as the first Spanish-language tv station in the country. The studio itself is large and bright with a nice set featuring downtown buildings for a background. Kudos to the interior designers for the earth tones and bright color pallet. This place is a nice upgrade and the station continues to support the local community by featuring local organizations in a positive light and promoting our hard work.

While I am a huge fan of 90's and 00's hip hop, this station just regurgitates the same exact…read moretracks all day. Tbh, I used to love Flo-Rida's "Get Low", but hearing it 4 - 5 times a day is beyond repetitive... C'mon now! There are a ton of great songs and artists for your listeners. Outkast, Pharcyde, LL Cool J, Paul Wall, Erik B & Rakim, Kool Mo Dee, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Da Brat, KRS One, Wu Tang Clan, The Roots, Beastie Boys, Dilated Peoples, Ice Cube.. From their involvement in JazzAlive, the Rooftop Concert Series to their awesome jazz radio show that runs from morning, noon and night they communicate why jazz is still a vibrant and relevant artform. Whenever I listen to their Morning Session to the Jazz in the Afternoon I picture dudes with milk crates of vinyl cramming them into a small Volvo Station Wagon and heading toward the radio station. The wealth of the knowledge of all dj's, who do all the shows is infinitesimal. The gamut runs from traditional, big band, zydeco, dixieland, avant-garde, acid jazz and all points between. Which includes standards by Coltrane, Parker, Porter, Thelonius Monk, Getz, Jobim etc. But for me the enjoyment comes from when they reach into the deep cuts, whenever they play music from artists that I've never heard of before. I typically keep a notepad next to me so I can jot down the names of a cool song or an artist. Above all what I appreciate is hearing the dj's provide a historical context for some songs or artists. Which provides me an invaluable insight into the mindset or an individual's vision. KRTU 91.7 FM is passionate about jazz, therefore it is successful in sharing that passion with the rest of the city. If you're tired of the other radio stations that play the same song a million times in one hour, this station is a refreshing escape from that. More importantly if you love hearing jazz in a live setting check out the various events they post, sponsor and support. John Coltrane composed " A Love Supreme ", to convey his love for jazz as an art form. KRTU seems to be an aural representation of that.

Since it's a college station, they don't have to play nearly as many ads as the other stations do, and they have much greater control of the kinds of tunes that they play. They play a variety of jazz throughout the day. Nothing ever too crazy. In fact, this is the only station we all can agree on at work. They don't play the same ol' stuff day in and day out. If you tune in on the weekends or late night, they often deviate from the jazz, and play some of the students' favorite songs. It's a great station to find out what kinds of jazz-related events are going on around town. Turn in, turn on!
