It never occured to me to review a radio station until this morning. So let me set it up: I get my Area 93.3 newsletter earlier in the week and much to my delight there is a presale for Stone Temple Pilots. Since this is one of my all time favorites I decide this is a must concert (no matter how crazy Scott Weiland is I think his voice is like butter). So 10a I click the link from Area 93.3 and it opens Ticketmaster and much to my dismay - no KTCL presale box!! Nooooo! So I shoot off an email to the station, just as an FYI. Much to my surprise, in less than a couple minutes I got a response from Nick Cage. Color me impressed (what color is impressed anyways? I want to say purple for some reason). Long story short, he got me squared away. 5 Stars for Nick Cage! Now I have my STP tix! Other than that, it is one of my go-to radio stations. No. 1 on the ole dial. I wish they would play a little more obscure stuff and not repeat so many songs, I mean I like Muse, but do I need to hear them 10xs a day? Still, a good spot to linger on the dial for awhile. I really gave this station a chance when I moved to Denver by listening for a long time..and it's not horrible but it is far from an epic alternative station.. Part of the problem with nearly all radio stations is these days is they continue to fall into the trap of playing the same songs day in and day out, on repeat, for years...93.3 definitely is in a repeat rut playing ANNOYING songs over and over and over and over every hour or two..and failing to explore OTHER artists and songs instead....this is also part of the reason why listening to radio is stale anymore. At least with a streaming service, you get variety and far more options. The other part of the issue is, IMO Alternative Music is going through a dry period where really truly compelling music is not really coming out right now. The last time period where I remember the new music coming out was REALLY GOOD for alt music was around 2013. Maybe it's just me but the new alternative music coming out currently and in the last 7 years, has been MEH generally speaking..maybe I'm just getting old and losing my edge and appreciation for all of it LOL..and this is not the fault of 93.3 Fm...BUT it is their fault that they play all the repeats all the time and fail to make their station truly interesting by exploring a far wider, varied playlist of alternative music.. Firstly, My personal opinion is (I apologise in advance for my harsh opinion) 93.3 is generally boring to listen to as well as frustrating to listen to due to all the repeats day after day of the same songs and lack of an expansive playlist of other alt artists that would make the station sound so much better.. Secondly, the signal never comes in that great on my headset..that results in less enjoyment for me. Other stations come in loud and clear but for some reason the 93.3 signal is not clear and comes in and out constantly...annoying..they really need to fix that signal if they want listeners and advertisers to take them (more) seriously. Thirdly, the radio DJ's on 93.3 seem to be of average talent and don't sound that great on the radio...they are just "OK" but nothing special. A lot of times, they come across as cheesy...this results in a great loss of pleasure by not being able to listen to really great DJ's. I feel un-WOW'ed when I hear the DJ's on 93.3. This makes the station a great deal less pleasurable to listen to than a station with awesome DJ's would be (more on this below). My recommendation: If you want to hear GREAT DJ"s and radio personality, listen to 91X FM in San Diego. If you want to hear and epic and extremely varied playlist without all the repeats all day, listen to 91x - and be exposed to a far deeper experience with alternative music. You can stream it online to your phone or your computer. 91X is an EPIC alternative rock station since 1983....they have an insanely extended playlist, all different kind of specialty shows (like Resurrection Sunday which plays alternative throwback songs and Project X, which plays rave music mixes or Loudspeaker, a a show that explores amazing San Diego local bands trying to make it big) the radio DJ's sound AWESOME and interesting and on the cutting edge...91x is truly an epic radio station and I recommend you listen to them instead of 93.3 If I were the management of 93.3, I would really study 91X hard and in many ways emulate them, and get better DJ's and a stronger signal and work on expanding your playlist by about 1000 times...good luck read more

No reviews in 2 years - time for an update. In the last 2 years, KTCHell's playlist-usefulness has fallen far down the hillside. I would agree largely with Becky and Kendra, the previous 2 reviewers - back in 2007 when the playlist was more diverse and the had the cute little hourly blurbs they'd announce (see Kendra M's review). Now? Not so cool and hip and with it anymore. I curse you, Clear Channel (waves fists in the air). There are 2 things that shine about KTCL still, and those are a) the funny little blurbs around the time for your evening commute home, and b) Sunday nights, where they have the specialized shows like Locals Only and (particularly for me) Alf and his "Retro Show". Everyone calls in requests, there is no Clear Channel-directed crapola, and you get to hear eclectic and really cool music from "back in the day" (early 80s to early-mid 90s typically) that didn't get a ton of airplay. Thanks for giving me another list of tunes to get for my iPod, Alf!!! That all being said, Sunday is only 1 day of the week, so even averaging it all out numerically...it's still only a 2 star radio station...for now. read more

I cannot believe some of the garbage that they play on this station. If I have to listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers one more time I will write a nasty review on yelp. Also, what is with the throwback lunch? IMHO there is a reason no one listens to that crap anymore. Why oh why do we have to listen to it again? Also, as an aside, I heart radio also blows. Why would I listen to your crappy alternative to pandora when there are like 3 or 4 other more better choices? Like pandora? Yes, I said MORE BETTER. read more

Fav radio station in Denver. The morning commute is withstand-able since Area 93 doesn't have talk radio. on the hour they have little jingles 0700: 7am time to go to work.. and don't forget your pants this time. 0800: It's 8, you must be late for something... 0900: gonna get fired, gonna get fired. Whimsy little diddies for in the afternoon 1600: It's 4 o'clock but you can't go home yet 1700: Time for a beer... something like that. Concerts that they promote are usually cool and they play some local music (Single File, The Frey before they went international/national). Kegs and Eggs event totally rocks St Patty's Day. Even more so if you have a hotel room nearby to pass out safely. read more

This is a love letter to Alf who is the reason why 93.3 is still auto-tuned on my stereo. Every now and then you can still get a good nugget of a song during Clear Channel's reign over the airwaves, but Sunday nights, it is ON! Alf is the only man who can get me to stay up late on a Sunday, and, trust me, that's a challenge. I need my z's. I had a late flight home last night and my drive from DIA was pure bliss thanks to Alf. Don't ever leave me. I need you and your retro badass-ness. I'm yours forever. Probably one of my favorite stations. They keep me up-to-date on upcoming concerts in the area, they keep me entertained with new (and I mean NEW!) bands, and they keep me smiling with their silly jingles. I think everyone should tune in. They play a diverse mix of music. If you don't like the song they're playing, wait another song. They'll play something you'll sing along with, followed by something you've never heard of but you like anyway... maybe your new favorite band. read more

During the day, its mostly ok but they are in love with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They play them about twice an hour. They are just not that good. Watch out after 9 or 10P in the evening. The playlist turns into some very strange garbage. Also, when they do play a good song, a crappy one is comming right after that. Something old, and tired probably. The only reason I switched from KBCO to this one is because KBCO is in love with Randy Newman. His songs are too repetitive and I just want to rip out my hair whenever I hear him. Both of these channels are owned by clear channel. I hope some day they try to stop sucking. Best idea is to get Pandora probably. read more

I like this station so much because a couple times during the year they give local bands a chance to be heard. They've been a catalyst for the Denver music scene over the last couple of years (I think). Bands like The Fray & Flobots, they keep it fresh. My only complaints: their rotations aren't THAT diverse, although... it is still better then some other stations. I find that they have a lot of Rockband and Guitar Hero songs on!
