There were a few cuties that I could see potentially growing into a serious relationship. So I sold myself as much as I could on their online form and waited anxiously for them to respond. 3 days wait is the general rule before calling right? I decided to take my little man with me to see if I had his approval before cheating on him with another lifelong commitment. The place was a bit out in the boonies and looks like someone turned their barn-home into a rescue shelter. But Kritter Kamp is a no-kill rescue place so it's worth the drive. The place is a bit overwhelming with tons of little guys yapping away inside the building. But I was just glad that they were kept INSIDE the building and not in outdoor kennels. I was surprised to see they offer boarding and grooming services as well. They have a grassy fenced off play-area where I was introduced to my list of potential suitors. My little man wasn't interested in being compatible with any of them and they seem to not care as well. He was more interested in sniffing the grass than sniffing their butts. After I exhausted my list of potentials without even coming close to a match, one of the KK staff said she noticed that I had a type- I like 'em hairy! She told me she'd bring out a new one they just recently rescued from the Sac shelter. Out comes "Cha-Cha", a white furball with mattes all over her feet. She was so friendly, coming up to me all wiggly-butt and waggy. And she loved my little man, following him around everywhere! I originally didn't want to swing that way and wanted males only, but she was such a sweetheart and it just felt right. The heart doesn't lie, ya'll. Turns out she had only been at Kritter Kamp for 2 days and they hadn't even gotten a chance to fully groom her yet or socialize her. She only trusted Betty. I could tell the KK staff really cares about animals by how they handled the dogs and how they grilled me with questions before allowing me to bring her home. But I was able to take her home the same day with a $200 adoption fee to cover for her shots and spay. She hadn't even gotten spayed yet, but the ladies at KK assured me they would call me to set up an appointment with SPCA to have her spayed. Sure enough, a few days later, I dropped her back at KK and they had her spayed and returned within a day with all the paperwork. And despite the many dogs at KK and how little time they had to make her all pretty and adoptable, she came home without fleas! Now that says a lot about the place. Two years later and then-Cha-Cha-but-now-Lola has proven to be one of the best life choices I've made. She fits so well with the family. So if you find that Match.com ain't matching so well, go adopt and you'll find a devoted partner who'll love you unconditionally. You save them, they save you. What a wonderful thing. read more

My Husband and I made the trek out to Kritter Kamp Rescue from our home north of Sacramento. I found Kritter Kamp on Petfinder.com and decided to reach out to them because they had many small dogs available for adoption. Contacting them was easy, I filled out an application on their website and we were on our way over the very next day! (We could have gone over the same day if I was paying attention to my emails). Once we got there the girls working were very welcoming and asked us some more questions about what we were looking for so that they could help us narrow down our choices. The girls knew a lot about the dogs and there temperament and what kind of home they would be best in. Unfortunately there weren't too many dogs that were potty trained (a big thing in our house full of carpet!) so they brought out the few dogs that were most likely to be potty trained since not too much is known about their backgrounds. My Husband and I saw a few dogs that we liked, but no one really stuck out to us until we saw Mamas (now called Mae). She is a little 5-6 pound Chihuahua/Daushund mix with short hair, big ears and a calm demeanor. My Husband fell in love with her immediately so we decided to take her home! Her adoption fee was only $140 because she was a Chihuahua which is right in line with some of the other shelters in Sacramento. I believe their adoption fees are around $100-200 with a discount if you adopt more than one. The adoption process was easy and we were on our way in no time. It has been a little over a month now, and we are in love with Mae. She acclimated to our house very quickly, and loves her forever home. She cannot replace our old dog, but I can only hope in time that I will grow to love her just as much. read more

After falling in love with some dogs at other facilities and it not quite working out, I decided to keep searching for my next fur baby! I fell in love with a little chihuahua mix named Printz! I found him on the petfinder app, inquired if he was still available and got an answer within the hour! Since he was still up for adoption, my boyfriend and I headed to Elk Grove to meet him! The location is out in the cuts and doesn't look like much from the outside, but this place has sooooo much to offer!!! Since we came specifically to see Printz, we were cautioned by staff that he has some problems - VERY shy, not house trained, won't walk on a leash and pretty much is so scared of life that he just cowers in a corner and stays there! To test the waters with other dogs, the staff brought out a couple of other dogs we might be interested in, but I knew that Printz deserved a better life and we would be the ones to give that to him. They also made sure that he got along with my existing pet chihuahua. He's only been in his fur-ever home for 3 days and he's doing amazing!! Although he has to wear a diaper (because he pees when he gets excited, scared, etc) he's been doing so well with potty training and even frolicked in the grass for the first time! This place is great! They really care about their animals! Printz came home with good teeth and clean ears and the rescue even threw in some toys, poop bags, leash and harness! All of his shots were up to date, but his rabies was outdated thus the rescue took $20 off his adoption fee. The process was so easy that we got to take home Printz that same day! Last Friday I adopted a beautiful little dog named Asher from Kritter Kamp. Linda the Kamp helper told me that is 4 1/2 year old dog has been there for 3 years and passed over for adoption. She seemed quite nervous and I decided I wanted to give her the chance at a better life. The owner Betty and her crew have a wonderful rescue Kamp for small dogs and cats. I know they give them all the love they can but there are so many that you know a private home can offer so much more to these four legged babies. Asher has been with me exactly one week. My dog was traumatized. When we picked him up his head was down and couldnt look at us. He's normally a happy energetic black lab and ALWAYS super happy and excited to see us when we pick him up, as all dogs should be! He walked with his head down low and tail not wagging. I told them I have NEVER seen him like this before. My wife tried to give him a treat and he wouldn't eat it. Even the care taker at Kritter Kamp went over to the car to see how hes doing and he wouldnt even look up. I asked brunette gal employee if Rufus was sick. She said no why? I said hes lethargic and cant even look up at me. She said oh its probably the bath. I said what does the bath have to do with him being lethargic? Ive given him baths all his life and he never looks like that. She said he was completely fine during the bath but some dogs react differently to baths. She said he was looking up and happy when i bathed him and blow dried him. I said you blow dried him?? She said ya, he was fine. This is how I knew she was lying. I said theres NO WAY he was fine with blow drying he hates the blow dryer! She got very defensive and said, as i told your wife he was barking the last 5 minutes of the bath but other than that he was fine (she changed her story and lied again!) I said you never told us he was barking at all. You said he was completely fine. We argued back and forth then went to ask my wife sitting in the car and my wife confirmed she never told her that he was barking. I said you're lying about that and youre lying that he was ok with blow drying. She said he was ok the first 15 minutes of blow drying then barked for the last 5 minute. I said there is absolutely NO WAY he was fine with the blow dryer for 15 minute or even 15 seconds! I know my dog! He hates the dryer. You probably tried to blow dry him and then did something to discipline him when he was barking. She got more defensive and said, youre acusing us of beating your dog! We dont beat dogs here! I said i never said you beat him those are your words. She says you said i hit your dog while i was bathing him. I said i didnt use those words! You're using those words! Now I'm wondering why she would use those words! I said you probably did something to discipline him! She got on the phone and told the owner that i was acusing them of hitting my dog. In a couple of minutes the short lady walks right up to my face and yells "We dont hit dogs here!" I said who the heck are you? She put her hands on her hips and yells "Im the owner!" Rather than ask me what happened or why I'm upset, she proceeds to yell at me about how shes been in business for 15 years, This is a business owner who cares more about protecting her employee than finding out why a customer is upset. This is someone who should not be in business. Now a couple of questions. Why would you blow dry my dog or any dog for 5 minutes straight while hes barking? Does it occur to you that he doesnt like what youre doing to him? Does it occur to you that youre causing him trauma? You may be in business for 15 years but that doesnt mean you know what youre doing! And you obviously care more about your employees and your business than your customers and their pets. I will not do business with liars and people who traumatize my dog. I would be willing to take down this post if the owner has enough sense to hear my side and find out why Im upset instead of being defensive. read more

Not happy with their adoption process. I really don't think they care about the health of their animals. I adopted a cat and she had fleas. Took care of that but I can't get her groomed because she also didn't have an updated rabies shot. I have another cat and they were aware before the adoption yet they still gave me a cat with fleas and no rabies shot. I have reached out to them twice and asked to have the vet health check information sent to my email so I can take the cat in and haven't heard back so I my cat is still at risk. This place is amazing. You cannot find a more caring wonderful place to board or groom your dogs. They also have a huge rescue operation, no kill, and at any given time have more pets on board than the local SPCA. They have enough love and care for all. The best!! read more

They said once application is filled I get a call or email if it was rejected and if done immediately I can see the dog same day.... We have been waiting , called twice and still waiting a week going on 2 weeks later. No rejection letter, no calls, nothing from them. I feel sorry for the dogs as we are a loving animal lover and our pets are like human members.. family! read more

This was an awesome place for my dogs. The staff was so kind and really took the time to learn about me and my dogs. Even when I had to call in and ask if they could stay one more day due to us being stuck in traffic that caused our usual 6 hour trip home to a 10 hour trip they were able to accommodate. read more

We are currently trying to find a rescue dog to adopt and found an adorable dog on the adoptapet.com website, so we contacted Betty at Kritter Kamp for more information. After filling out the adoption application, I received the following reply: "Sorry, but I cannot approve you. Our contract states that the dog will not be outside or in a garage when to owner is gone. We want our dogs to be part of the family." Ok if that's a requirement, fine. Even though I believe it to be quite excessive to require people to take their dog with them or leave their dogs inside their house anytime they go anywhere....especially given what sounds like cramped quarters at the rescue facility. BUT the final sentence was just wholly unnecessary and offensive to me. So I sent back the following: "I am sorry to hear that. I appreciate your response. However, we DO make our dogs a part of our family and would always make sure they are walked, well-fed, comfortable, and safe when we leave them in our yard and dog-friendly 3rd garage. While I appreciate what you do as an animal rescue, I do not appreciate the tone of your email suggesting we are somehow not good dog owners or would not make the dog central to our family. It's inaccurate and insensitive, at best." It's unfortunate that some of these dogs may not be adopted due to the shelter's unreasonable requirements and what I feel to be quite arrogant attitude toward potential adoptive families. read more

These ladies are amazing! If you have not been, please do check them out (call first) and spread the word. Betty has some of the most darling pets that she has saved their lives. She is looking for a good home for all of them. And yes, just like others have stated, they are VERY SELECTIVE about where these pets go and I think that is amazing. I wish that other rescues would have the same guidelines. The animals under the care, watchful eyes and regard for their future as so blessed to have Betty, Linda and the volunteers. These ladies know the animals personalities, wants and needs and they go the extra mile to make sure the animal is placed with a perfect fit. I admire them and love those animals. read more

Professional's who know what they are talking about and love what they do! Don't judge a book by its cover, this place is out in the country and not the prettiest on the outside! Don't feel bad telling them exactly what you are looking for! We came there to look at one dog and fell in love with another dog! Our dog is very healthy! The adoption fee was $160 for us, plus we made a $15 extra donation to help out with food costs! The adoption fee came with a free exam from a local vet ( see my review of Dr. Kittel vet ) the adoption fee also included applicable shots/ spay a leash and a bath! Don't expect a perfect dog when you adopt a rescue, most of them are there for a reason.. they had crappy owners prior! Give them lots of love and attention, you will earn their trust eventually! They are one of the more reasonably priced pet boarding facilities in the area. It's a bit of a haul from Sacramento, but being out so far has the advantages of more space for the doggies to run around. They've been able accommodate us on short notice multiple times. I only have two problems. One if a constant and the other just happened once. One of the drawbacks is that they don't let bully breeds play with the other dogs. I know it is probably a precautionary measure, but I always feel bad seeing all the other dogs have fun together and ours segregated. Other times they have taken excellent care of our dogs. They ask a lot of questions to make sure your dog is being taken care of the way you would normally. Last time they made a big mistake. Each dog normally gets one scoop of food in the morning and one in the evening. We left enough food for the days we were gone and even for a couple more days in case something happened. Somewhere things got messed up. When we returned they informed us that they had run out of food and we would be charged for what they were given in addition to their own. It was clear they had been overfed when they brought the dogs out. Both of them were roly poly. Instead of two scoops a day they were given two scoops a feeding. It's no wonder the food had run out days earlier. No big deal, but a little annoying. read more

Attempted to fill out an application to adopt a dog that I saw on Petfinder. I first asked where they were located as I noticed that you needed to visit daily for 2 weeks straight. I was given a very general answer of the general location in town rather than an exact address. Then I filled out an application for a dog that we were interested in. I waited a week and did not hear back. I emailed asking if she received my application. I receive a blunt response that she did e-mail me and maybe it went to spam. Also was told a 6-yr-old would not be good with this particular dog. I checked my folders again, including spam, and no - there was no other e-mail except the blunt general response on where her business was located. I feel sorry for the animals that aren't going to be adopted into loving homes because we are prejudged on things like having a child before she even meets us or sees how the dog actually is with us. Will still search for a new doggie family member, but not from this place. read more

We adopted our dog here about a year and a half ago, and it was the best decision we have EVER made. Our dog is incredible, and we think she was waiting for us as much as we were waiting for her. We went to the shelter to look at another dog that had been on their website. The staff listened to what we were looking for, sort of a low-key small dog that would be good with kids (I have a piano studio). The dog we went to look at was adorable, but the staff was honest about the fact that, until he was fixed--which hadn't happened yet--there wasn't really a way to tell what his personality would ultimately be. I really appreciate this; he was so cute it was hard not to take him on the spot, but in hindsight I think he would have been a nutbag. Adorable, but crazy. They asked us to look at another dog, a little ragamuffin. They were so sweet with this dog, you could tell everyone just loved her... she had been abandoned in a field with a litter of puppies, and by the time the puppies had been brought to the shelter, they were too sick and none of them made it. This little mama had been in mourning and they were really anxious to get her into a permanent situation. She just melted our hearts and now we can't imagine life without her. And it has been awesome to watch her go from being traumatized, underfed and shy to hilarious, cuddly, and OH so smart. Her name is Willow. I was surprised to read the negative reviews of the shelter. The shelter is non-profit, and works solely off of adoption fees and donations. The fees cover the medical care for the dogs while they're there. Illness like kennel cough (which Willow had) is sort of to be expected. They're not breeders, they're rescuers and you can expect lots of the dogs to have problems. It's why they need adopting. So don't be put off by the smell or the way the place appears at first. The staff really cares, are doing their best, and the dogs really need someone to love them and continue their rehabilitation. It won't happen at the shelter, it will happen at home! (I say this not to judge other reviews but to encourage anyone who's considering KK to go for it.) Willow is now our "studio dog" and is at every piano lesson and recital, and two of my students have gone to KK themselves and adopted equally amazing dogs. Please support this shelter, they really care about finding wonderful homes for these needy pups. read more

I feel a bit torn leaving this review, but I have to trust my intuition. We have taken our dog here since he was just a puppy. His first stay there was fine. I don't recall any red flags. The second time he stayed there, it was a week stay. When we picked him up, we realized that his whole neck was swollen and he must have been stung by a bee but there is an area on his neck where it seems that he may have gotten injured by something else. When we brought him home, he did not interact with us much, avoided eye contact. He appeared to be depressed, and not himself. I called the camp and they seemed genuinely concerned, and always was excited to see my dog so I decided that it may just be me being paranoid. Well, we just picked up our dog the other day after about 4 days. He has been behaving differently. He appears scared, and not wanting to be around us much. We can tell his right back leg is injured as he cries when he jumps onto our couch or going up the stairs. Again, we called and they stated that he was fine before we picked him up. One other thing is that his bed had urine odor drenched in it. They explained that he has a small space and that his urine probably soaked onto his bed since the area is small. My dog is an in door dog and he never uses the bathroom in the middle of the night, so unless he was locked up all day And not let out, why his bed would reek of urine. He has been home for 3 days now, still down and a low mood, still in pain, and still avoiding eye contact. He behaves hesitant most of the time and paranoid. Obviously I don't know for sure what is going on, but I just don't think that any dog should come back home behaving out of the ordinary. Something in my gut is telling me that something is impacting my dog negatively there. I wish I didn't feel this way, but I do and my dogs behavior is telling me that this camp is not the place for him. read more

I adopted my fur baby Lady on 7/28/15, the staff there was so friendly and were so patient with me while I looked and held all the different dogs. They were very honest with which ones would fit my lifestyle and which ones wouldn't. You can tell they really care about the animals there, the animals all seemed very well taken care of. My wife and I went around to Bradshaw Shelter, Petsmart, Craigslist, Petfinder, Adoptapet, just about everything you could think of. Yesterday was the second day in Petsmarts National Adoption Weekend. The Elk Grove one was supposed to have dogs from Kritter Kamp but when we showed up we were informed they could not attend. However, they were a hop, skip, and a jump away. We got in our car and hurried over. It was a farm! We caught them 30 minutes before closing, thank goodness. A lady, whose name slips my mind but I believe was Betty, came out and told us about Kritter Kamp. She asked us what exactly we were looking for. We thought we wanted as young as possible, which was 8 weeks. Of course, adorable puppies, my wife and I fell in love. I noticed an older dog about 3 months who caught my eye. She put the puppies back and took my wife in the yard. They dogs were just the sweetest. My wife mentioned she liked the puppy because she was all white. Betty said she had an older puppy who was white with a black muzzle. She went inside and brought out our perfect puppy. She was so calm around the other dogs, didn't bark once (still hasn't even with knocking doors and the door bell), she was cuddly, and not to mention super adorable. My wife gave me one look and I knew we were taking her home. We got to pick out some toys, she got her nails clipped, and we got a harness with a leash. The adoption process was fast and easy. Needless to say, the first evening, night, and morning have been wonderful. She really is perfect. I would highly recommend Kritter Kamp to anyone seeking their perfect pup. read more

This place is terrible!! I stopped by for a tour, as I was leaving town and needed a place for my puppy to stay for a few days. The place absolutely REEKS of urine. Puddles of pee and poo everywhere...hundreds of little rat dogs everywhere running around crazy barking and growling..no restraints...not only did I step in urine several times while I was there, on my "tour" I was actually bit by one of the little dogs running around the property.... I left this place in sheer terror....The conditions of this facility are dangerous, substandard and downright disgusting!! read more

The first time I went in to Kritter Kamp Rescue to look at dogs I was a little over whelmed, I had affectively just lost a companion due to a roommate moving out. They have most of their small dogs in pins in the main room, and bigger dogs in kennels with doors to the outside. I ended up leaving that day not ready to make a decision and being concerned about the tight quarters. Three days later I went back after having searched all of the shelters in Sacramento. Betty was incredibly nice again and brought all of the dogs I had noted online out so my husband, friend and I could spend time with them away from the rest. She told us where the dogs came from and about their personality, never rushed us and left us be with the dogs checking on us every so often. This time while I was there I noticed that every time there was an accident in the main room she or a volunteer immediately cleaned it up, waste went outside to a trashcan. They also take the dogs in groups to play outside at least once a day. It did seem as if they may not have been taking great care but once I paid attention I realized they knew every dogs name and did the best they could to keep them clean and safe. The dog I adopted had notes from the original shelter that Kritter Kamp rescued him from: "Runs away when approached" and "Still unable to handle". He would not have been adopted in the state he was in. Betty and her staff had been working with him for 9 months getting him socialized and they turned him into an incredibly sweet and loving dog. I have adopted 3 animals from Kritter kamp. Our one eyed cat "Willa", our jack russel mix"pixie" and our party schnauzer "simon". All of the animals were and are still healthy as can be. I also leave my dogs with Kritter Kamp when I have to leave town. I am a pet groomer who also has many clients with happy healthy dogs who were rehabilitated and adopted by Kritter kamp. People who board their pets here don't realize that the front desk area is where almost ALL of the small RESCUE dogs live. They complain about cramped living but they are rotated into the play yard regularly. Yes pets urinate several times a day and if you spend 20 or more minutes there as I have you will see that they are constantly running behind the dogs and picking up after them. Another thing that these on lookers who only have 3 dogs tops under their care dont seem to understand is that every lil dog you are looking at in those cramped quarters were saved from being put to DEATH. What they have with Kritter Kamp is LIFE, LOVE & a chance for another family. Betty and her staff know every dogs name and temperament. Betty pays for the food costs and medications and spay costs out of her pocket and does not receive a penny back until the adoption fee comes from an adoptee. There is no profit from the rescue as every penny goes back to the animals. In response to the irate man below who posted saying all of the dogs are sick. That is crap. The second dog he mentioned returning was adopted by a personal friend of mine. That dog is so happy with his new owner Francisco and they love each other. It seems to me that this man wanted a dog that would accommodate him. Shouldn't any real dog lover realize that they are adopting dogs who have had trauma and need EXTRA love and care? He sounds to me like hes mad that he was seen unfit to adopt a rescue. Curiosity was killing me so I called Betty to ask about this crazy dude and that's how I found out his second dog was my friends forever dog. And he also failed to mention that the last dog he returned he got as a puppy from a litter born at kritter kamp and he kept it for 5 months before taking it back. Thats just as bad as the peopke who dump dogs at rescues like garbage. What he was also told was that a family with two children adopted this dog and they love the dog and the dog loves their kids.(no face bites) He has not been returned. Some people need to reevaluate themselves. I dont work at Kritter Kamp but what I do know is that since Betty has began rescuing she has saved thousands of dogs from death and that she works from 730 am to 530 pm for free 6 days a week and has not taken a single vacation in 10 years because she wont leave the rescue dogs. That's more than many can say they sacrafice. Look at the bigger picture people. Many of you onlookers couldnt handle volunteering there for a day without running with your tails tucked between your legs. read more

Adopted our new canine child Sweeti which we renamed Lily. The process was easy breezy !We don't normally adopt pets bigger than a chihuahua but we fell in love with Lily, a rat terrier/chihuahua mix. She's loving, loving, loving and protective. read more

I was very disappointed when we picked up our dog. She was extremely traumatized plus when we got home she drank water like she hadn't had water for a couple days. She didn't eat for two dats until she was acclimated again to the love she gets at home. I'd definitely take her ANYWHERE else just not here. read more

Betty and Linda are awesome. We have boarded our dogs here multiple times. They do a wonderful job. Our dogs are always well taken care of. Linda loves all the dogs that come to Kritter camp. The facility is clean. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. read more

Really excellent people. They love their dogs and want the best for the animal and human. Linda is great and very patient and thorough. I adopted so can't speak to boarding, but this is an excellent place to find a dog. They've followed up twice to see how the dog is doing. He's excellent. I have not adopted a pup from Kritter Kamp YET but do plan to in the near future. My adoption application was submitted and I received a personal enthusiastic reply with 2 minutes. I saw 6 of their pups just the other day at an adoption event at PetsMart and was so impressed with the dogs, the two ladies with them, the cleanliness of the play area and the spunk of the dogs available for adoption. By far the most caring bunch of folks. They helped me arrange the adoption of a homeless pit mix over the course of weeks of negotiating with my apartments to allow him. Anyone who comments about the building clearly doesn't understand that animal rescues aren't all about huge flashy buildings - all the mint goes right back into helping the animals. Especially annoying was the below comment about the owner of the rescue "pocketing" the money - that person clearly doesn't understand that things like spaying and neutering all the dogs costs hundreds of dollars per animal, and food costs for hundreds of dogs is equally expensive. The animals also need dog beds, toys, medications, flea treatments - it takes a lot of resources to run a shelter, and these folks put their all into it. By no means are they greedy or any of that nonsense. Highly recommend them for their professional, caring, loving attention they provide animals, and the standard of ownership they look for in adopters. read more

I went to Kritter Kamp today to look over the puppies. The women were SO kind, so professional, I'm utterly impressed! They asked all kinds of questions to determine which pup would fit our family best, and I ended to taking home the perfect new addition to our family. They have SO many dogs who need homes, but even though they have hundreds of dogs they were all exceptionally clean, healthy, and happy. These ladies genuinely care about each and every one of their dogs, and they're very careful to make sure all dogs go to the right homes. They give all pups their shots, they deworm them, they provide a free clinic visit/check up, spa//netters, AND microchip them! If I EVER decide to expand our family again, there is only one place I'm going! THANK YOU KRITTER KAMP! read more
