As such Gino's gets three stars whereas if it were in London it might get two. It is a tasteful greasy spoon, with a fairly effortless (and entirely genuine) retro feel. The staff were polite and happy to do what you might ask. But it's somewhat let down by old-fashioned English-style cuisine; the food feels additive- and flavouring-fuelled and smacks of having been preprepared in bulk. The price point, for Slough, is not cheap. The menu consists of paninis, burgers and thundering cooked breakfasts. I've not tried much from the menu, but I have heard of respectable people ordering the same thing there on multiple occasions, so it can't be a complete travesty. My panini was a bit bland but I knew what I was getting; my chips were a bit oily and tasteless and the salad was unexciting. But none of this shocked me; I asked for it, was fully prepared, and not disappointed. If you're hungry in Slough and are not in the mood for a chain restaurant, it serves as a safe bet. As a small, family-run independent business powering through these miserable times, it has to be fully credited for standing out from Slough's identikit high street.

Made…read moreless clear is that the people behind the chain are those responsible for Taylor St Baristas, and as a result, the coffee at Harris + Hoole is far superior to what you might otherwise expect. Apparently they won best UK coffee chain at the 2014 European Coffee Awards and I can believe that. I certainly can't think of any other major chain that can compete with what you can get at Harris & Hoole. The location of this Harris + Hoole in the massive Tesco Extra in Slough magnifies the incongruousness. There are the shelves containing the coffee making equipment (Aeropress, V60, Clever Dripper, Hario grinder, even Harris + Hoole branded KeepCups) that one sees at all 'serious' cafes. The refillable filter coffee marketed as 'drip' filter coffee. And the superb-value, excellent espresso - a 'small', 8 oz flat white costs £2.30, and sizes go all the way up to 12 oz. There are some corners cut. There's only one blend of coffee (Union), as you might expect from a large chain (but not at an independent). The filter coffee, while refillable, isn't anywhere near the quality of drip/Aeropress coffee in independent stores, perhaps because the coffee used isn't as well-suited. Still, overall, I am most certainly a fan. It's one thing to cash in on the coffee craze by lazily churning out sub-standard lattes for 'artisan' prices as too many opportunist independents and coffee chains do. It's quite another to, as I think Harris + Hoole do, use their in-depth knowledge of the trade to make good coffee significantly more accessible to all. I declare Harris + Hoole to be a force for good.

Not only do they serve the usual coffee and muffins, they also serve lunch type food such as paninis and a great hos of hot drinks. The baristas are amiable but not very patient as I found out when my friend admitted he is a rookie when it comes to coffee and asked what the difference is between the coffee. I dont blame him; the selection is almost too big. There is seating available both indoors and outside. Inside is very cosy and the theme is art neuveu, outside is cold!
