I said oh, the website says 9PM or 2100 to be exact and the merchant a few stores down also told us they were open until 9. She rudely said, it's 7, the whole mall closes at 7 and I am closing. Also, they need 6-8 inches of substrate to bury themselves so they can molt and grow!! Painted shells are toxic, there is not any actually nutritional food for them to eat (they have multiple food groups like fruits, veggies, calcium, proteins, etc. that they need to eat to stay healthy and survive), barely any water in their dish, plus the water dishes were dirty. They are literally are just climbing on each other and are terrified. They are basically starving and suffocating to death. These beach souvenir shops seriously need to stop selling and mistreating these wild animals for such a small profit. Not only that, but they mislead and miseducate people about how to properly care for hermies, knowing they will die soon after purchasing, when they could live to be 20-40 years old with the proper care. As a hermit crab owner who does extensive research and is part of many hermit crab owner groups, I know these living conditions are uninhabitable for the herms. So shameful. You'd think the owners would do take the time to research the conditions needed to provide a healthy life for the wild creatures they are exploiting!

Hermit crabs have complex needs e.g. a sealed, humid tank so that they can breathe (they cannot breathe in this open enclosure and are likely suffocating). At least 6-8 inches of substrate so they can moult, de-stress and feel secure. Two water pools big enough for them to fully submerge in (shell and all) - one salt water and one normal water, both prime. A varied diet including protein and many other components - not pellets! Adequately sized NON painted shells and at least 10 options each to change into. The shells in this shop are painted and toxic to the crabs. These animals are suffering and I urge you not to support this business, the more you buy - the more crabs are taken from the wild and forced to live in this hell hole.
