Finding Dr. Kramer was my lucky day for my lung cancer treatment. The first visit was in his office to do a physical and talk as he said to get to know me. This approach helped as you would expect finding how you had lung cancer was scary. We talked about treatment plans and the road ahead. He was kind, listened, knew his field and receptive to questions. His office has its own chemo treatment room and you can get you blood work done right in the office. This was especially helpful with the Covid 19 pandemic. His staff also was kind and caring as well as professional in treatment. I cannot recommend Dr. Kramer enough. The doctor who diagnosed me with colorectal cancer referred me to another oncologist but I decided to do my own research. No matter how I stirred the names and data and references, Dr. K. rose to the top every time. Not only is he a great and knowledgeable oncologist, on top of what is new and changing in the field, but he ENGAGES you. Half the time we were in a consultation, we discussed travel, film, restaurants, food, anything and everything under the sun. Politics. An article in the NYer. This may seem trivial, but it wasn't. Whether intentional or not, he was seeing me not as a patient but as a person, a fellow human being. By engaging me in such discussions, he was reminding me to be remain engaged in life, in what makes life such a joy. Better still, his restaurant recommendations were always spot on. (Wise & Sons really does have awesome NY-style pastrami.) I would be remiss to omit mention of his staff, who like Dr. K are joyful and engaging, and not in any superficial way. They are well aware of the seriousness of their patients' diagnoses and are not merely "whistling past the graveyard." They too engage you on a human level, with a foundation of compassion and even -- after a year of visits -- affection. Certainly the best doctor I have ever had. To the usual praise of "caring and compassionate" (and he is definitely both of those), I would add "exceptionally competent." It is worth noting that Dr. Kramer is in contact with a wide range of experts specializing in particular or unusual cancers, whom he will consult with if he feels that might be useful. In my own case (a rare type of lymphoma), when something very unusual came up, he sent me for a consultation with one of the world experts in this particular disease at the Stanford Cancer Center. So with Dr. Kramer you not only have access to his own skill and knowledge, but also, if needed, to the experience and wisdom of some of the best doctors in the country. I was referred to Dr. Kramer of San Francisco Oncology Associates to shrink a low grade ILC cancer tumor in one breast prior to surgery. It appeared to be a walk in the park. Within a month of treatment a more aggressive invasive ductal tumor was found in my other breast requiring chemo and targeted therapy and a different approach for each breast. In Dr. Kramer's office I discovered: Cancer is an odyssey of twists and turns. Cancer, even for Stage IV, is no longer a death sentence for all with the advent of less toxic drugs and miracle targeted drugs to combat specific cancers and characteristics. I met long time resilient survivors with quality of life. Dr Kramer has excellent bedside manner, is well connected with other medical specialists, stays abreast with the latest oncology developments and tailors each person's treatment to their unique situation. He and his team of nurses and medical and office assistants work like a well oiled machine focused on the comfort and needs of the patient His staff is respectful, responsive, professional and knowledgeable The infusion room is a very pleasant well lit room with a bank of windows over looking the city with comfortable heat warmed recliners and attentive skilled nurses who have just the right touch for even someone like me with needle phobia. On my last visit Dr Kramer pleasantly surprised me with news that my 12 month targeted therapy was ending 6 months early due to a recently published extensive vetted drug study showing 6 months treatment is as effective as 12 months, limiting exposure to potential side effects. In close - I highly recommend this practice. I will continue to happily visit this office on a declining basis for the next few years for them to monitor my situation knowing I am in good hands. read more

When my mother and I walked into the office of the San Francisco Oncology Assoc. more than three years ago, we were both worried and fearful. My mother had anaplastic thyroid cancer, a fast-growing cancer with a very poor prognosis. Today, my mother is alive and thriving -- a miracle that would not have been possible without Dr. Alan Kramer and his team. Starting from the front of the office, Dee, Johnna and Gladys make sure that appointments are appropriately scheduled and confirmed, and coordinate labs and scans -- in addition to many other responsibilities behind the scenes. They are knowledgeable and thorough, and always patient and understanding. Although they are juggling the needs of many, they make you feel singularly important. Nurse Practitioner Kristen Fong is Dr. Kramer's right hand. She understands the journey of an oncology patient and offers valuable guidance and support that was critical at difficult times in my mom's treatment. We looked forward to her infinite kindness and ability to find answers to whatever issues my mother faced. The in-office lab is convenient and allows Dr. Kramer to evaluate aspects of my mom's blood at every appointment. This is essential since her blood counts are key indicators of her health. Medical Technician Tom is a master at drawing my mom's blood even though her veins are very hard to work with. Medical Assistant Latrail never fails to put us at ease. She takes my mom's vitals and takes us to the exam or infusion room, making sure that all of the paperwork is in place. It has been more than two years since my mom had chemotherapy, but we will never forget Nurses Dana and Fred who set up and monitored my mom's infusions. They made sure that she had a footstool, a pillow and a blanket or two, whatever she needed to rest comfortably. They listened to her needs and calmed her fears. Most importantly, of course, they have the experience and skills to make sure that infusions are as painless as possible and completed properly. Every time Dr. Kramer sees my mom, he is incredulous at her recovery because he knows what the odds were and yet, after going through his treatment plan, she made it through and became stronger than ever. I'm sure there is no magic formula, but Dr. Kramer had the right formula for my mom. His vast expertise and understanding of what the right balance is to have a positive outcome are what he offers to his patients. My mother was referred to Dr. Kramer and SFOA by otolaryngologist Dr. Mark Singer, another outstanding physician. She is here today because of them and Dr. Roy Abendroth, her radiation oncologist. I'm writing this review for anyone who got the news that they or a love one have lung cancer. I was in that position this year when my father was diagnosed with Non-small cell lung cancer. In the beginning, I felt lost because I was afraid and scared I was going to loose my dad and I knew nothing of the disease that my dad had and also not knowing how my father will overcome this. I started to do my research to try to learn more about the disease and how people have survive it, and every story I read said you have to find a good caring doctor who has the experience with the knowledge to help you understand. It took a few appointments, but I was lucky to come across Dr. Alan M. Kramer. The stories that everyone wrote about him made me feel like I was going in the right direction I was experiencing what they went through. Dr. Kramer has made my father and myself feel safe and that we are in the best hands with him after the first initial appointment with both my father and myself left feeling with some relief all from what Dr, Kramer. His staff has been the absolute best at reaching out to us and answering all of our concerns. I have been seeing Dr. Kramer for 15 years. He was my chmo doctor working with radiation oncologists at UCSF. I'm currently still following up with he once a year. There were a few times, other doctors suggested I might have recurrences. Dr. Kramer would look at the whole picture and told me not to worry too much about it. Later analysis all showed he was right and saved me lot of troubles. He's very experienced and compassionate. He's quite serious when I was in critical conditions, but relax in other circumstances, which giving patients a sense of good feeling and trust. read more

During the summer of 2010 I was diagnosed with throat cancer and chose treatment at UCSF. My radiation oncologist referred me to Dr. Alan Kramer who then structured a program of chemotherapy. It has always been my experience that the professionalism and competence of physicians is usually reflected in their staff, and I found Dr. Kramer's staff (especially Kristin, Fred and Dana) to be excellent. During every chemo and follow-up appointment Dr. Kramer and his staff were super attentive, focused, and encouraging. Dr. Kramer was my chemo oncologist for my treatment for tonsil cancer. He coordinated my treatment with the radiation oncologist and his office administered chemo to me once a week for a couple of months, to complement the radiation. When my cancer didn't seem to be responding at first, he changed chemicals and that seemed to do the trick. So I have to give him a lot of credit for that. I also have to give him very high marks for hiring his nurses, Fred and Dana, and nurse practitioner, Jody. Those folks are absolute angels. They really helped me through a very difficult time; I would dare to say they saved my life. Particularly when I got dehydrated and became depressed, they knew just what to do, and they did it. The only thing that keeps me from really raving about Dr. Kramer is that he is VERY busy and several times during my visits with him he took telephone calls. Sometimes the calls were not about medical business. I found that pretty off-putting. But I'm not complaining too much because I think he healed me. And his staff, as I said, is the very best. Almost 5 years ago, my wife was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. At first, her family doctor referred her to a surgeon in Oakland that only intensified instead of calming our fear and worries. The surgeon spent a lot of precious time doing tests after tests, without any concrete treatment plans. We knew time was not on our side so we did a lot research on the Internet and asked recommendations from our friends and relatives. Luckily our research efforts located a winning team: Oncologist Dr. Alan Kramer and Surgeon Dr. Nima Grissom. They worked together a lot. Knowing the urgent nature of my wife's cancer, they both gave my wife urgent appointments. Within just a few days, all the necessary tests and preparation work were done at CPMC hospital and the chemo treatment immediately started. Dr. Kramer understands that when your cancer is spreading, any unnecessary delay means the difference between life and death. Dr. Kramer is super knowledgeable. My wife did a lot of online research during her free time when she was staying home fighting cancer. She asked many questions regarding cutting edge cancer treatments reported in the news. Every time, Dr. Kramer answered the questions succinctly, showing that he is very updated with the latest medical developments. This is probably due to his extensive connections in the medical research world. A couple of times during consultation in his office, we overheard his phone conversation with medical researchers doing tests and experimental treatments of various cancers. I guess this is the advantage of having an Oncologist like Dr. Kramer who himself is well-known in the cancer field. The smart brains in this field exchange ideas and information to help each other. All the supporting staff at Dr. Kramer's Office were great! We initially were very depressed as we feared my wife's death was looming around the corner. However, everyone at the clinic would cheer you up as if there was nothing to worry about. They are right, my wife was in good hands and she is now a cancer survivor, not a sad statistic.
