Went to a few classes around SD for a month or two and enjoyed it, but wanted to dedicate more time to getting better and joining a team, but as a female lead. Eva, the director and instructor, was super inviting, open, an attentive, patient, outgoing teacher, and lovely dancer (sometimes I feel like a potato after watching her haha). I feel like I've learned a lot from her so far, even in the short time I've been there, which is great bc I didn't really do any partner dancing before. After trying the first class, me and my girlfriend were sold and decided to sign up for the monthly session. As beginners we were glad to find a nurturing place like this. The dance party (held once a month) was a fun/excellent way to apply what we learned from our class. The zouk community here was very open and friendly to new dancers. They respected that we were limited in our experience were still open to dancing with us! Looking forward to what we'll learn in the new year!

Hot Rhythm Lounge is a monthly (third Saturday of each month) swing dance party in San Diego…read more The venue: The party is held on a dance floor of the Crown Dance Studio. The studio is located inside the mall, where parking at this hour is easily available and free. There is only one restroom available. The hours: The party itself starts at 9PM and is preceded by a one-hour lesson at 8PM that concentrates on a particular "concept" (like connection) and, while can be useful to a beginner, is not a substitute for a beginner lesson. The drop-in fee for the whole evening is $15, with discounts available for skipping the lesson, buying online, and coming to the party really late. The party goes on to approximately midnight: 1AM is the official cut-off but organizers declare the right to end it earlier if there would be few dancers left on the floor. To the best of my knowledge, there is no Web site for the event itself, check the Swing Dancing San Diego site http://www.swingdancingsd.com/ or their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SwingDancingSanDiego/ for details. The music is a mix of swing tunes, at the end of the evening quite heavily weighted towards the slow blues. The crowd: on the day I visited, the lesson was attended sparsely (about 15 dancers), but the crowd starts growing quickly after 9PM. By 9:30PM or so there were about 60 people dancing. On my second visit there were about 40 people. The floor of the studio is not very large, and during the popular tunes the floor got crowded a bit. The dancers are a typical San Diego bunch: all ages, but weighted towards the younger end of the scale, more follows than leads - but not disastrously so - on my first visit, more leads than follows - and disastrously so - on my second visit, significantly more follows than leads again - on my third visit (I guess the smallish size and changing nature of the group makes the ratio unpredictable), all levels of skills among the followers - few were true beginners, many quite advanced; mostly intermediate and advanced leads. Overall: for an intermediate or advanced lead, this is as good as it gets in San Diego. If you can bring your own follow or lead, do it. The sometimes challenging music mix and the lack of the beginner lesson makes HRL not the best venue for a beginner lead. Beginner followers with some basic connection skills and musicality will be most likely OK.

If you are considering buying one of those great Groupon or Living Social deals so you can learn how to belly dance - SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! It became obvious to me why Sabrina had to invest in those types of deals as a way to advertise - because the most obvious and convincing form of marketing, word of mouth...would only be a detriment to her!! The organization itself is completely unorganized. I called multiple times to clarify how to register and what the exact specifications were for enrolling. I left numerous messages BEGGING for a respons. I needed to know what exactly to bring, if I could go to different studios and whether or not I had been moved from the wait list to the class. I didn't want to drive all the way down there and then find out I didn't make the cut off. But why even have a wait list option, along with submission of a phone number and email address....if not only are they NOT going to use those forms of communication...but they won't even answer the phone when you call or submit emails!! Nobody has any idea what anyone is doing!!! It is so freaking unorganized...it's painful to watch!! But the worst part, is the teaching!!! There was a lot of "Do This" but absolutely no, "let me show you how". When you ask questions, it becomes obvious that Sabrina becomes frustrated and would rather you just didn't talk at all. It's so sad when a class of 20 girls has NO ONE doing any of the steps correctly!!! There are no use of examples or techniques or hints or guidance at all...you're just thrown in and told to do it!! It was clear that Sabrina is a very unhappy young lady and sadly, her negative energy was just exploding like vomit all over her students. It's frustrating and terrible to be stuck in such a waste of time...but I paid for the Groupon....so....hmmmm. I'm not sure what I want back more, my money or my time!!!!

The website didn't give clear clear instructions that I could figure out about how the classes are set up, but they're set up on a monthly schedule where you learn a dance or a style at th beginning of the month and start a new one at the beginning of the next month. Not knowing this I showed up to a class on the last week of the month. I don't think she recognizes her students because as someone who had never been to a class before she passed around a lined book asking everyone to sign their name for priority registration since the new month would be starting and "all the Groupon users will be signing up." Implying that someone like myself with a coupon will get crap registration and possibly be set back another month against someone paying full price for lessons. Why even sign your business up for deals then? Maybe you get better treatment if you go and just pay the regular price for lessons, I don't know, but I left and won't be going back.

I turned to my husband a few weeks ago and said, "When was the last time we went to the ballet?"…read moreand I heard those words you NEVER want to hear and that word was "NEVER"! Through our years dating, traveling or residing in cosmopolitan cities we have both seen our share of musicals, plays, and operas. We have seen performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Lincoln Center in New York, the National Theatre in London. I've even had the pleasure to see the Royal Ballet in Russia when I worked in international student exchange, but I don't want to get too political about Russia right now! Swan Lake is probably the most famous and classical ballet I've had the pleasure to view. However, when I saw the Great Gatsby was being performed here in San Diego, all I could think of was tap dance and fringed flapper girls! When you modernize anything, all of of a sudden it can appeal to a newer and larger audience. So, last weekend we booked the matinee, a great option for when you want to brunch beforehand or dinner afterwards. We enjoy sitting in the loge, in dance, it's a great perspective to see things from above, in addition you have less people coming and going for various breaks. Although, I must admit a more considerate crowd than a typical sporting event. The show was fun and everything we hoped. A little jazz, some tap, and a lot of ballet. Prior to the performance and at intermission, students of the ballet school sold programs and merchandise to suporrt their programs and the arts. We have to keep the arts alive through dance and movement. Many, many, years ago, I taught ballroom dance and I had a student by the name of Jaffe. It became a huge shock me that I was the dance teacher of a prima ballerina's father. Susan Jaffe, danced with American Ballet Theatre and with the world famous Baryshnikov! I NEVER dreamed of being a ballerina, but I believe in the arts and supporting all art forms. So, let it be known, it is good to step outside your comfort zone, try something new, you NEVER know what you might like, you NEVER know who you might meet or what you might discover. NEVER say NEVER and if you want to try something new, go modern versus traditional. Up next, The California Ballet Company will be performing "Beer and Ballet". Get your man out there... #TheCaliforniaBallet #TheGreatGatsby #LogeLife #BeerandBallet
