The 23rd Annual GI Film Festival award ceremony was held at KPBS. Actor/Comedian/Veteran Thom Tran was the emcee and did a wonderful job. Really proud of my man David Kniess for winning this year's Best Documentary for "The Gift." KPBS was a very nice venue for this event and the catering team did a good job setting up the refreshments, small bites, desserts, and appetizers. I got to peek inside the media room where the interviews and recordings take place, pretty cool! read more

So, in other words, if someone racks of parking violations, toll fees and other fines, it's under YOUR NAME!!! They say we send you a transfer of liability. But that doesn't mean all the fines aren't under YOUR NAME and you have to go through the hassle of getting them cleared. Both of my parents have worked since time immemorial. Because of that, I grew up with a lot of old Vietnamese women babysitting me. They didn't really know what to do with a super hyperactive kid who went berserk every time he had a handful of Frosted Flakes, so most of them resorted to hypnotizing me with the TV. So actually, KPBS was my baby sitter when I was growing up. 3-2-1 Contact!, Sesame Street, Bill Nye the Science Guy, Shining Time Station, Mister Rogers, Square One and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego among others, was all I could watch on our old TV that got six stations, two of which were in Spanish (es SABADOOOOOOOOOO GIGANTEEEEEEEEE!!! con DON FRRRANCISCOOOOOOOOOO!!!). But those shows taught me the value of being me, the magic of science, imagination is fun and how crayons are made. As I grew older, my parents decided to keep me in charge of my siblings. So I took a page from those little old Vietnamese ladies' book and left KPBS on hypnotize mode for my sibs. In the evenings my mind fed upon the riches of Nature, NOVA and the various historical documentaries that sprinkled the landscape. Saturday mornings, I developed my passion for food watching Yan Can Cook, The Frugal Gourmet, Julia Child and developed a wanderlust watching Rick Steves travel Europe through the back door. Yeah, you could say I was a pretty huge geek. So imagine how blown away I was when I realized that KPBS also had a radio station! By this point, Late Night with Eddie Love was on his way out of San Diego radio, and The Quiet Storm wasn't quite able to fill the hole that he'd left in my heart. Fortunately, the BBC World Service was able to fill that void with great news and entertainment programming from 7pm-4am. Nowadays, KPBS is one of the only terrestrial radio stations in town that I would listen to on a regular basis, and this says a couple of things: 1. San Diego radio is, by and large, craptacular; 2. The programming at KPBS is good enough to keep me wanting more; and 3. Dwane Brown is as close to Eddie Love as we'll ever get out here. Thanks for the memories and for being consistent, KPBS. I'll keep burning bomb CDs when I want to listen to music in the car, and you guys keep giving me all the news that's fit to broadcast. P.S. KPBS - Television Stations Near Me - San Diego, California

NPR is a stimulating alternative to the lame morning shows and talk radio that try to be provocative. I love NPR and have several podcast subscriptions- my favorites are "American Life with Ira Glass" and "Studio 360" These shows are funny, enlightning, and entertaining, offering a view of the world unlike anywhere else. Now to the San Diego radio station-- it's kind of weak. The talk shows in the morning attempt to discuss local San Diego or CA topics, but I rarely find something that is truly riveting. Also, the studio guests almost always share the same view- there is never any real debate. I once called in and commented that there three people representing one side and zero representing the other. This is not good journalism or public discourse. It's simply stacking the politics in a certain direction. And as another reviewer pointed out-- the station format switches to classical music after 8 pm. Why?!!! Is there really an unmet demand for this? Why not devote another frequency just to classical? If you want a great example of a public broadcasting system, tune in on the web broadcast of KCRW or 89.9 FM in Santa Monica. They have an incredible mix of music genres and talk radio-- this is where KPBS needs to go! read more

As I've become older with this station I can see clearly now. Though 20 minutes away from the border, KPBS has decided to not include Southwestern, Mexican, nor Filipino cultural programming over the years. Radio Latina was good and I listened to it when it had the "great" timeslots at 2:00 am, 3:00 am and 5:00 am . I was horrified to learn that Radio Latina came out of KPBS radio. I am tired of turning on KPBS and watching East Coast programs about East Coast houses. Tired of funky Norwegian food cooked on the Tundra. Now we have a Spanish made telenovela on KPBS. Where are our people of color? Trite travel/ad for Baja and dated wine entrepreneurial shows are both dated and trite. Do we not have contractors? Do we not have regional cooking? Do we not have fabulous historic destinations? You want our money but for what? Reruns of decades old programs? When will KPBS give us Equitable Representative Quality programming? I've been in San Diego listening to NPR (in smaller and smaller doses) for 20 years. Prior to that, I was a regular listener (or member) of the following NPR affiliates: KCMP (Minneapolis); WCAL (Northfield, MN); WHYY (Philadelphia); KPCC (Pasadena); and KCFR (Denver). They were all great, well-run stations. Based on this history, I feel that the only way to describe KPBS is "bush league."--particularly the engineering. Even during the present, "short" pledge drive, they can't seem to prevent the 1-2 minute periods of dead air that cause you to check for a radio problem. This doesn't happen at other NPR stations, but it has been happening several times a week at KPBS for many years. On some occasions, it has lasted 15-20 minutes without any explanation. ( Joan Kroc willed a boatload of money to KPBS to improve its broadcast facilities, and it seems like KPBS spent it to make them worse.) The transitions are routinely botched. It is a pattern that KPBS will step on the last 30 seconds of a national story to switch to the local feed, so that you will miss the critical wrap-up and summary of the story; it's like going to a movie and having it stop 5 minutes before the end. But the absolute worst, most bush-league practice of all is for the local and national feeds to be overlaid for a full minute so you can't hear the end of the national story, or the beginning of the local. Apparently, nobody notices because it lasts for a minute or more, and it keeps happening--again and again. The local programming for Mid-Day Edition is pretty good, as it always has relevant, well-reported stories. And since the program is re-broadcast in the evening, it is almost always possible to catch it. But here's the problem: KPBS will pick two of its 3-minute stories and re-broadcast them twice an hour during morning drive time (Morning Edition) and twice an hour during the evening drive time (All Things Considered): 10-12 times a day--a full 30 minutes of air time for a story that can be readily heard at other times. Presently, these local stories (like bike lanes) are getting more precious airtime than every other national story except the Ukraine war. And there is a pattern to the stories that KPBS picks: they usually involve some type of loud confrontation, or some wrenching emotional outburst. The worst example of this was a story about a rape victim in which she screamed and cried for nearly the full length of the story. It was repeated 10-12 times a day---for TWO days. I wondered how many other rape victims were re-traumatized by this gratuitously repeated incitement. It was a disgusting, insensitive thing to do, and indicates that the management of the station lacks not only operational competence and an understanding of the value of air time, but basic moral judgment. read more

I don't want to hear about disasters. I would much rather listen to soothing music, or learn about the latest geeky thing I can distract myself with. Sometimes, I don't get that luxury. Today KPBS (89.5 FM) is talking about fire. They're talking about a lot of fire and they are doing an amazing job. KPBS has been my main link to important news for a decade. One morning, I woke up, drank some coffee and turned on the radio. It seems something terrible had happened in New York. I listened all day, and the next and the next. KPBS also told me what was happening when the Cedar fire was burning. They've constantly and richly informed me about the world and about my neighborhood. Now they are doing the same for Firestorm 2007, and they are even innovating. The KPBS website is top notch, and improving hourly. When their regular updating method proved to slow for all the fire info, they built in new features on the fly. They've even set up a Twitter account. When their main transmitter burned down, they worked out a deal with 94.9 to get back on the air. The staff of KPBS works hard, works overtime, and works for all of us. Heck, I'm not even a member. When the worst is over and San Diego is in cleanup mode we will all be looking for ways to help. We'll be sifting through debris for our friend's pictures and sending money and other donations to charities. As for me, I'm also going to become a donating member of KPBS. I hear they need a new broadcast tower. I want to make sure they get it. read more

National Public Radio has forever enmeshed itself into the fabric of my life. I fancy this station particularly on the basis of its genuine pursuit to satiate listeners' collective awareness instinct and its ability to regard humility as a virtue. If anything, NPR is a testament to the tale that local radio news is anything but a dying art if the execution is precise. But for the insightful programming on NPR, I'd have no choice but to resort to lesser media sources. The alternatives essentially amount to episodic coverage delivered by overly painted automatons donning cheap suits and fake, toothy smiles (compliments of local, televised news). My relationship with the Union-Tribune tends to take on a love-hate dichotomy, but that's for another day. At any rate, I also enjoy NPR's accessible approach to news. You'll find no "if it bleeds, it leads" gimmicks here. However complicated the story, the station always manages to explain the nuts and bolts without compromising the complexity of the issue. It is this quality that draws me to programs like "Market Place," despite my fairly limited scope of the business world. It is this quality that many news outlets fall miserably short of achieving. NPR doesn't present news as a series of dead, unrelatable facts and figures. Rather, it bridges the perceived gap existing between people and events. It tells you WHY it should be of great concern to you that the majority of our water is imported from the Colorado River Basin, that elections in Zimbabwe are fatally flawed, that City Attorney Mike Aguirre could quite possibly be a real-life nut case, that China has an emerging gay scene. NPR doesn't just assume that you care about a given issue; on the contrary, it assumes you don't. It grabs you by the face and it makes every God-given effort to connect you the individual to your surrounding world. Pardon the oratory fellatio. It's getting way too sexy in here, isn't it? Try this: Stop reading my review (after you rate this review useful, funny AND cool), have a sit down accompanied by your favorite beverage, and tune in. Hell, stream it. You're already online. If you don't like it, I won't repay you in sexual favors, but I'll heartily consume your complaints. I miss San Diego NPR, which made me feel like the privileged, left-leaning intellectual I pretend to be. :) The programming could be better on the particular San Diego station, but the shows chosen are informative, and I do love my 6pm BBC World. I knew it was time to end my last relationship when we spent our first lazy Sunday morning together. I got up, shuffled to the kitchen, made coffee, turned on KPBS and bundled back up on the couch. (Ex)-BF comes out of the bathroom, sits down next to me for a few minutes, and then says, "Umm, wtf IS this babbling crap?" It was "A Way With Words." Things didn't last much longer than that. I love NPR in general. The great mix of national and local news, This American Life, A Prairie Home Companion, which I've seen live, and a whole bunch of human interest crap that makes me tear up alone in my car on the highway. Minus one star for this particular NPR station, for disbanding and leaving us to the classical music wolves after 8 pm, and for playing a few too many repeat shows on the weekend. Specifically I would like my Sunday noon The Splendid Table back please. I love NPR and KPBS. Listening to NPR in my house and/or car is definitely my main source for news and information, and agree w/ fellow Yelpers that it is so informative and insightful. I have great memories growing up of always having NPR playing in the background (and, apparently, my kids now will too). Really appreciate the local news coverage and shows (A Way With Words) and so many of the national shows: Prairie Home Companion, Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me, Rick Steves, This American Life, Car Talk (even though it's now re-reruns - those guys deserve to retire); etc. Don't watch as much of the KPBS TV shows, but do enjoy many of their specials, Antique Roadshow, Downton Abbey, America's Test Kitchen, etc. Had the chance tonight to volunteer to answer phones during one of the KPBS-TV Pledge Drives, and was a pretty incredible experience to be involved first-hand, and see the back-stage side of the both the TV and radio studios; even got a free dinner for our volunteer group and quick tour of the TV and radio studios. On par for a large city public radio and TV franchise. Which isn't saying a lot, since PBS and NPR basically became Fox-lite over the Bush years as they ran scared from right-wing claims of left-wing bias. My main pet peeve is that PBS TV usually only plays good programs once, but they burn up prime-time slots to repeatedly air garbage like Hugh Laurie's I-think-I-can-sing infomercial, or "Doctor" (of "Educational Counseling") Wayne Dyer's navel-gazing nausea-fests. And what's with all the British-like accents on NPR? Just thinking about the NPR stations I listen to regularly, KPBS has Alison St John, Oregon Public Radio has Kristian Foden-Vencil (okay, he's cool), and Texas Public Radio has some Brit-sounding woman whose name I can't recall. Do we think all the posh-speak klasses up the joint? Is it the goofy American belief that people with Brit accents are automatically intelligent? Does British radio have American hillbilly-sounding talent to provide a less pretentious flair? read more

It's no CBC. OK that's not really a fair review, because I grew up with the CBC so have a soft spot in my heart. I'll try again. I like talk radio that isn't talk radio, which is to say that I prefer life when I don't have to listen to chain smoking overweight former jocks expound upon the Chargers latest bowel movements or right-wing faux feminists preach about how to keep your man happy. In both these factors, NPR fits the bill. I miss The Sunday Edition with Michael Enright, though; I miss The World at Six, and As it Happens, and Lake Woebegone is *NO* Vinyl Cafe. It's probably just because I *didn't* grow up with NPRs shows that I can't fall into them like a comfortable pair of PJs, but there it is. So, for now, it'll do when I can't listen to internet radio. I regularly get hooked into the programs and I don't want to leave my car because its just that interesting. -1 star because there is only classical music after 8. I have only been listening to NPR for the past couple years but I love it. I hate the morning talk shows of other stations that discuss celebrities, make bad jokes or really bad song parodies. I can get stories and news I am interested in on my drive to work. Who doesn't like that? I wish they had more programming though, you know, after 8pm. And can we get them some government funds so they aren't always hitting me up for dollars? I also enjoy the programs on tv. It makes me feel like the boob tube is actually strengthening brain cells instead of sucking the life out of them. read more

Lately KPBS is been going hella down hill into some steep grade decline with their new sections called... make things : SMALLER, FASTER, STRONGER, SLOWER, and more BORING. Who in their right mind wants to hear some annoying talk show host personality make bad jokes while delivering a bunch of crap sprinkled with a dash of real information. Its not me, and if it is you, thats just too bad.. but you've gotten what you wanted and ruined my PBS nova in the process. I love NPR but hate KPBS. In fact, if it weren't for NPR, I would never listen to KPBS. Even though San Diego is one of the larger cities in this country, the local programming of this station is that of a third tier media market. 'These Days' would be acceptable if it were one hour long and on at 3am. Most of the time, the topics are filler and the guests are often inane. The screening of callers is horrible if existent at all. Often people call in with no coherent question or opinion. Many ramble on as if they were lonely and just need someone to talk to. I shut my radio off the second this show comes on, I can't stand it so bad. At least they changed hosts as the previous one seemed to have little clue as to what was going on, would often ask the most trite questions and make completely idiotic comments. Many of the local reporters are horrible as well. One local reporter's voice is way too nasally and another completely lacks gravitas. Some of them need to go back to the Midwestern community college radio stations they used to work for. The movie critic is also atrocious and I hope she is not paid for her work. I know 8th English honors students with more cinematic insight. 'A Way With Words' is another painful experience. Who thought it was a good idea to give two people who you know were beat up a lot in high school an hour to drone on thinking they are funny? I work the graveyard shift so I am usually listening to NPR early Saturday mornings when "It's Only A Game" comes on. With other radio stations devoted to sports only, is it really necessary to have an NPR sports program? This is another time when the radio automatically goes off. And what's with this 'One Book, One San Diego'? I generally suspect that NPR listeners are relatively intelligent, if not intellectual, people. The passages they read on air suggest these books are written for people at a 6th grade reading level. They sound like they are one step above "Curious George Goes to the Vet". When are they going to cover 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'? Then maybe I would care. As for the music, I do think classical music does have it's place and I do listen to the classical programming for time to time. I really wish however that San Diego had a public radio station for eclectic/progressive/alternative music such as WYEP in Pittsburgh or WXPN in Philadelphia. This is one of the very few things I would change about San Diego. In general, they need to revamp all of their local programming or just stick to 5 minute local news updates in between the NPR segments and drop the 'in depth' local reporting. I also truly believe they would get more support in general if they switched their music format. Of course, I love NPR, the Writers' Almanac and most of the other syndicated programs and that's what keeps me listening. I've lived in other cities and know that a public radio station can be run much better. I do not take public radio for granted and am a long time supporter. I did contribute to KPBS when I first moved here but have since quit as this station irks me so bad I cannot continue to support it. Instead, I have gone back to sending money to my hometown public radio station which is far more professionally run. I generally look for the best in everything but with KPBS it's hard for me to do. I don't know why my distaste for this station is so intense but writing this review was very cathartic. Thanks for listening. read more

KPBS is solid, but i have one beef with them. During their evening programming(Nightly Biz Report, Newshour, etc), they have mini commercials that state "Paid for by support from viewers like you." Great, an actual news source funded by the "people", i think.....Then they go on to show numerous commercials from the likes of Exxon Mobil, Monsanto, Chevron, and other CORPORATIONS!!! I consider that an insult to my intelligence! Cmon KPBS! I realize technically corporations are "people" and quite possibly "viewers", but they sures heck aint "like me". I understand though KPBS, like anything and everything else; when it comes down to it, MONEY is the ultimate decision maker. So, my question: How much influence on your "news" do the corporations who sponsor your shows have? Hooray for Monsanto! Go steal another farmer's land! No! KPBS is great. It kept me company in my lonely mornings of downtime between Sensei's ninja visits (my old boss is a very busy man). I love the music programs - not necessarily the late night programming, but the special reports/interviews on composers and history. And to defend the classical music after 8 pm, at least what they play are relevant pieces instead of the random insignificant stuff the other classical stations play. I love the programs and I think that it's better than the LA one. I wish I donated to 89.5 instead of 89.3 - my heart is with KPBS in SD. read more

Some of PBS's programming is great. NOVA, American Masters, American Experience. And more. But... during pledge breaks (begging periods) the shows are lousy (and repeated endlessly). And. Currently (August 28, 2019) the TV stations -- all four -- are off the air for unplanned maintenance (for us over-the-air, non-cable TV folks). read more

Linda from the reception desk contacted me to offer an alternative and Tom gave us the best tour of an amazing studio. My family was very impressed at the multiple aspects of production that were included, especially the green wall and the news room. Ordered some things for my 88 year old mother for Christmas around 12/09. Half of the order barely arrived before Christmas. The rest arrived 01/05. Kind of late for the rest of it. If you don't have it to ship in time for Christmas, then say so up front and let the buyer decide what they want to do. I felt like I was tricked when they already knew they didn't have the merchandise available. Opened the package to find damaged CD casing. Opened one to check the CD. Didn't look damaged, but now I don't trust any of it. Called customer service about (1) arriving a month after being ordered, and (2) arriving damaged. Was told these items were a 'pre-order'. Told him nothing in the website ordering indicated such. It had showed as in stock. I received an email after the order that it was not in stock. So assumed that was it for those items. Getting a free shipping label sometime next week. They're trying to send replacements, but I'm sending everything back. It was intended as a Christmas gift for my mother. I had to do something else instead. I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM THEM AGAIN. read more

As the years have gone by, I listen to the radio less and less. Or I should clarify and say that I listen to music on the radio less and less. As MP3s and podcasts replace Top 40/radio music, NPR and other news (like KPBS) are the only pre-programmed channels on my car stereo. And I feel good listening to it because it's publicly funded and not some Clear Channel whore where the material is biased. read more
