I'm sorry, Kevin Kenny is a joke and doesn't understand radio. He is a loser who can't understand what makes even the top 10 summer songs good, instead falling into the hole of cliche music. He is the worst DJ you have ever had and an embarrassment to San Diego and alternative radio read more

It's great that they provide so many opportunities to give away tickets to things like Coachella, or to see the Regrettes! I can only base my review on the live in-studio session with the Regrettes, but it was very good. They were very organized, like they'd done this a million times, and the radio personalities are pretty funny. Even though I'm vegetarian and couldn't eat it, they brought in Jersey Mike's sandwiches, which I appreciated. The radio station people seemed polite, but everything felt rushed a bit. We only got to watch the Regrettes play a couple of songs, and though I wished they could have played more, this was more promotional chat than concert. We got to meet and take pictures with them, and my daughter was elated. The Regrettes get 5 stars through and through. read more

ALT949 - The Regrettes in studio at 94.9. Awesome band! - Radio Stations Near Me - San Diego, California

Enough!!!! After losing DSC I tried to like The Mikey Show. I really did. But today after listening to their idiotic misinformed ranting about the new book about John Edwards I wanted to call in and scream at them "You are the fucking most stupid people on radio". Now come on these people are in the broadcast industry. How can they not have all the information when going off about a current event. A very recent current event. Do any of these toads actually read the paper? Watch the news? I can no longer listen to this drivel. It's too damn frustrating. My advice to the people on the Mikey Show is to read up before you speak up. It's that fucking simple!! read more

I've had the pleasure of going in for two in-studio sessions at ALT 949 lately. The first was Big Data, which are one of my favorite groups. The second was Robert DeLong, who was a super nice guy and a great performer. Both times I met staff from the station and got fed free pizza. This station rules! Thanks Ciro! read more

THE MIKEY MORNING SHOW IS OVER! today, i heard music as i drove to work. mindlessly trying to beat all the red lights as i made my commute, i assumed it was on 91x. ...but then i heard a recorded message that the mikey show was over and they are now taking the public's ideas for what to replace it with: ideas@fm949sd.com id say 'how about music?' because last i read on their logo....'it's about the music' ??? but i guess thats too easy and there arent enough dollar signs attached to it. we.....shall....seeeee..... read more

"It's not about the music" its about the warst talk radio s how in the morning on the air. I am sorry but I deleted you from my Radio. I would rather listen to "All things Considered" on NPR for 24 hours straight while being crane kicked in the gut than listen to this station any longer. "It's about the money" apparently but such is business. read more

Five good reasons why you should listen to the Mikey Show. 1 - Mikey ditched the "Circus Folk" from the previous station and actually found a few side kicks that DON'T live in the back alleys of OB. 2 - A Latino DJ/Show Host that ISN'T confined to a Ranchera station? People should be supporting this show on that basis alone. 3 -Many listeners are calling for a station boycott/shutdown. I don't want to see Hilary, Tommy, and Amanda lose their jobs over a silly radio station slogan. I say NO to collateral damage! 4 - Boycott CheeseSteaks! The Lincoln Financial Group's HQ is in Philadelphia. So let's hit them where it hurts most! 5 - I actually had a wry smile when I heard Mikey and his band of idiots went dark. However, I'm giving the show a second shot. While the show is *rough*, I'm treating Mikey like a new employee. It's going to take a while before I can tell if he's going to work out or not. read more

This is the best radio station I've found since moving here 4 years ago. Big Sonic Chill is a godsend. If you like alternative music, this radio station has a great mix of artists and songs you've probably never heard of. I got introduced to Ivy, Pinback, Feist, Red House Painters, etc., and quickly became hooked. The best part is that if you hear a song you love and the DJ doesn't immediately announce the band, they post the play-list the next day on their website (http://www.fm949sd.com/home/index.cfm). Then you can start pestering your friends until they make you CDs containing your new favorite artists. My IPod is forever in debt to this radio station. read more

I really love this station as far as the music goes however I really miss the morning radio show. The reason I gave 2 stars is because I have been living in California for over two years and trying to win concert tickets which they give away plenty. I finally won 2 tickets. I was so excited and now I go back and forth for almost a week proving who I am uploading drivers licenses twice filled out form now they want a utility bill . If I didn't know this was the radio station I was sure I was being scammed . They sure do make it difficult to claim your prize !!!!! read more

Best radio station ever! This one's for true audiophiles. This was my favorite radio station throughout college, and even though I've moved from SD I still keep it bookmarked for streaming over the internet. They play great alternative rock, lots of independent local bands, and the DJs are very cool people. A truly great independent radio station, matched in quality and selection only by KCRW up in LA. Also, check out the website for the 'recommendations' page. I have never gone wrong checking out artists and albums from there. read more

This radio station used to be about the music. They have slowly eliminated all the daily and weekly radio programming that used to make this station great. 8 O'clock Albums...Gone Brown Bag Blues... Gone Big Sonic Chill... Gone Brunch with Bob and Friends... Gone Swami Sound System... Gone There was even a time when listeners got to come in and be the DJ for an hour. NOT ANY MORE! I should have stopped giving them a shot when they introduced a morning variety show. It has been a steady descent in to oblivion ever since Mikey was allowed in the air. The station has pretty much become impossible to listen to with the lack of variety that now dominates the playlist. Get back to playing a wide variety of music and deep cuts... read more

As for terrestrial radio, I am a fan. The DSC is the same ol' dribble, and at least there seems to be a bit more of an attempt to be fresh here, yet DSC is very polished. Its simple, though, 94.9 needed better ratings in the morning and this was an obvious choice, although many other comments are appropriate, yet some are cutting! So, when my SIRUS(XM) is forgotten at home, this is my 1st choice, second DSC, third... 640am because I have tried "The Show" several times and I am just not on board. BTW, wtf is a P1 or M1?!?!? read more

Yeah... still just as bad. But sorry mi corrazon tunes, I love you back, mucho. You have mi corrazon. And there is a time and place for all of the stuff they play now probably- I can't deny STP and even (I guess) Blink, but 949 did get destroyed. It was a pretty cool innovator prior. read more

The Mikey Morning Show is terrible. Seriously terrible. It's evidently NOT about the music anymore. The good news is, I do think 91x has caught on so Mat Diablo has my full attention in the mornings, and they seem to be playing more music to fill the void left by 94.9. I do still turn 94.9 on during my evening commute because they do realize that no one will listen if they don't play some rockin' music now and again. Sigh, I wish it could just go back to the way it was. :( read more

There was once a time when I was madly in love with this station, but that time has since past.... By about five+ years. With the advent of The Mikey Show and the considerably weakened playlist, I am beyond disappointed with the direction the station has taken. It's almost like North Park... Once iconic for its artistry and iconoclastic, punkish stance against the contrived, it has itself become a contrived caricature of its former self. I just cannot respect a station who touts that they are "about the music" when they include such artists as Blink 182 and No Doubt as part of their repertoire. There are only 2 saving grace points to this station to which I award 2 stars: Big Sonic Chill and The Swami. Otherwise, I'm just no longer interested. read more

I tuned into The Mikey Show this morning. Between bragging about how popular his show supposedly is, dude and the posse talked about manscaping and men's hygiene products. Cutting edge, 94/9. Following a pitch for tingly shower products and alternate uses for Preparation H, dude was mysteriously up in arms after one of his flunkies was so bold to state that all penis carriers have (for curiosity's sake and under the auspice of privacy) performed the "pull and tuck" maneuver (disclaimer: if I were duly equipped, you bet your sack I'd give this a go). Apparently, fiddling around with one's phallus in unconvententional, non-procreating ways is an affront to decency. It is neither funny nor in good taste. The FCC could be listening! You'll pardon my aside, but The Mikey Show reminds me of my college Nyquil benders. Have you ever experimented with Nyquil? You know the feeling. You're sick out of your gourd reeking in your over-worked and under-compensated immune system's sick soup broth when you stumble across that circa 2006 Nyquil. Dog shit is the best descriptor you can ascribe to your current condition so you throw caution to the wind. Fully aware that you are simultaneously flirting with disaster and giving a middle finger to FDA recommendations, you chug the whole bottle. The feeling that follows is an indescribably confusing state. There are so many questions, but no answers. What is 5? When walking, is it better to put one's right foot forward first or the left? What are the odds of being sexually harassed for the self-employed? If moths don't have balls, then what are moth balls? I totally forgot what I was talking about. Yeah, man. Toe jam. I don't know what's worse--a station that fancies itself an independent purveyor of music despite its unapologetically sycophantic fondness for the '90s or a station with a self-ascribed mission of keeping it "about the music" despite its brain-drain of a morning show. Big ups to the mystical Swami, ubiquitous Tim Pyles and cataclysmically cosmic Big Sonic Chill, the station's only redeeming qualities. read more

When I first moved to San Diego in 2006, I was stunned to find a station like FM 94.9 that played precisely the type of music I loved and sought out. A station that had the balls to play David Bowie's "Queen Bitch" and The Cure's "A Walk." A station that treated its listeners with respect. A station that actually lived up to its slogan "About the Music." Fast forward to Fall 2012 and the departure of Garrett Michaels, and FM 94.9 has morphed, horrifyingly so, into one of those awful faux-rock stations that believes the glory days of rock were ten years ago (even if, in fact, they were not). The station's playlist - and I do mean playlist - combines the very worst elements of Rock 105.3 and Channel 933, with a glancing nod to 91X, as if playing one song by the Smiths every three days confirms its identity as a format pioneer. It's one thing for a great station to flip formats and pull the rug out from beneath its listeners' feet (looking at you WHFS in Washington and Indie 103.1 in LA). It is quite another for a station to quietly dump its heritage format, retain its slogan, and try to fool its listeners into thinking the pile of milquetoast awfulness they're hearing is what they've been listening to all along. Heads up, FM 94.9: we know the difference between filet mignon and corned beef hash. Don't you dare try to pretend we don't. read more

less than a star if I could now. Came back to San Diego after a few years and now no Brunch with Bob and Friends, no Swami, no Big Sonic Chill?! Now what do I turn on the radio to hear? Fucking Papa Roach and Puddle of Mudd? What the fuck, you station controlling dipshits. If I wanted to relive 2002 crap rock, I'd get, well I'd get nothing because no one wants to relive that pile of shit. Also for a while I had a competition as to how many songs it took before you played Gotye when I got into the car, turning into a timing competition because the record stands at 10 seconds. Play some newer stuff! Play some different music! Stop hiring brodude asshats to play crap music all day. I used to look forward to this station. UPdate: I forgot Pearl Jam, the Seattle Family with Eddy as Father Seattle. (She sits in a room full of bleary eyed coffee drinkers, she gets up and walks up to the podium, at first quite nervous but resolves herself finally stuttering into the microphone.) "M-m-my name is Shelli and I'm over the Grunge scene." This morning I clicked on 94.9, then I heard Placebo and I was like OH MY GOD, is it true could they really be stopping the bullshit? Then the next song, Cobain began trumpeting his sad little soul once again. Screaming trees was in there too, another Seattle band not too overplayed on 94.9 but if you had the Seattle box set back in the days you've heard it enough to be sick of it in your collection, and while we're at March Madeness clearly is a bad idea if you're pitting Cobain with Beastie boys, please turn them both off. I'm actually going to ask for the removal of all Alice in Chains at this point as well, you clearly can't be responsible with media. *** + Stone Temple pilots! *** I am SO utterly and PAINFULLY disappointed in the changes on the morning show and afternoon over the last (has it really been a year?) Shit! I've given up, same songs from the same era all the DAMN TIME! At some recent Yelp events, like a book swap and art event I ran into Ruggy and Lyn and we talked about the overload of Grunge era bullshit they are constantly playing repeatedly over and over every freaking day. WTF yo!? Every day I wake up and try, hoping deep down they'll forget maybe Seattle every existed. Come on! Look I agree it was an excellent movement in music but we're over it. I don't even MIND if you play it once in a blue moon but every time I click the radio it's fucking Kurt Fucking Cobain! FOR REELZ. Please stop with the overload of these bands too: 1. Red hot chili peppers 2. The Beastie boys (dry heave) 3. Soundgarden 4. MotherLoveBone 5. Sublime (oops I just gagged) The ONLY reason 94.9 is keeping 2 stars is for the epic night time show, she is still keeping it REAL. I could kiss her for keeping music alive at night .. at least. Halloran do you have any control over this, can you have a hissy fit, can Garrett? Is this what everyone wants? If it is guess I can't do much about it. read more

I used to brag to out of town friends about this insane station out of San Diego that they *had* to check out. I remember getting excited on road trips when I would enter broadcast range. I remember checking every morning when I started my car, hoping for those couple-times-a-year occasions when the signal would stretch all the way up to Hermosa Beach. Mornings were music, and music was right. I know you guys still have 8 o'clock albums, Brunch with Bob and Swami, but it just feels gone. It feels changed; it feels ugly. Come back. read more

Listen. The debate over whether it's truly an independent station is never-ending and pointless, like arguing about which Ice-T movie was best (Surviving the Game) or what track really defined Vanilla Ice's career (Ninja rap from TMNT2). Nobody cares anyway, and I think it's just nice to see someone trying to stick out in the tough FM radio market. The best shows on this station are Brunch with Bob and friends on Sundays which is old school reggae, and of course Big Sonic Chill for the late night. Really awesome to have a show go till 2am with a mix of indie throwbacks and super chill tunes kind of like what they play on Groove Salad on somafm. In fact, internet radio or a creepy hipster's dorm room are probably the only other places you'd hear a similarly rad mix of tracks. I do wish they'd slow down with the Offspring and wake up the half of the station stuck in the mid 90's grunge scene though. I used to shun FM stations on principal alone and I'm glad to say 949 has made me a semi regular tuner-inner. There's music on most of the time and the DJ's are pretty good too. I love how Amanda and Boomer usually sound like they're in heat or just really high (or both? o_0) The news and commercials are kept at a tolerable level too. Bottom line I'm a fan and a listener and you should be too. read more

I used to brag to my friends across the nation about how San Diego had an awesome radio-station that I could tune into anytime and NOT hear easy' listening music. I could get recommended albums from their website. I could count on a kick ass concert every summer at the Oceanside pier. I could tune in and listen to a variety of programs like: Big Sonic Chill, Brunch w/Bob, live Albums and live festivals. I could always count on interesting and "NEW" music !! Google "for fm 94/9, it's about the ratings " It's a SD CityBeat article that explains what changes have been made. Guess I'm stuck with 91x for anytime I want to listen' to the radio :( RIP 94.9 PS. for all the old dj's and mgmt,,, Thx for a great radio station read more

Once upon a time there was a remarkable station named FM949, who's credo "About The Music", has now died a horrible and painful death. What happened to the station that used to play obscure Bowie and Velvet Underground tunes? Remember the Coup D'Tat weekend? All of this is just a distant memory. I used to lovingly embrace the somewhat elitist attitude that the station possessed. 949 used to take pride in the fact that they REFUSED to play Lincoln Park and 30 Seconds to Mars(which was once jokingly referred to on air as 30 Seconds to Morons). Since Garrett left the building, I have heard some rather terrible music infiltrate the airwaves (specifically the last 2 bands mentioned). To be honest, I was rather THRILLED when the Mikey Show left since it brought false hope that we would once again only hear music in the morning. That was short lived once Woods' juvenile morning show popped up. For a period of about 4 months, during my morning commute I would hear that f-ing song by Gotye and FUN every day!! The straw that broke the camel's back was when I heard Puddle of Mud and Papa Roach on consecutive days! This was when I concluded that the world will indeed end on 12/21. There used to be a time when I could easily differentiate between 91x and 949 but I have now found myself tuning in more to 91x. I've noticed a vast improvement in their choices since Robin Roth has taken over as the musical director. I am asking that whoever has taken over the station please take a moment and read these reviews. Your listeners have been very loyal to you over the years and you have pretty much shi**ed on us over the last few months. Please do something to rectify this because I have created a drinking game that is tied to when you play Gotye, Fun, and "Paradise" by Coldplay (which has been every day). Oh, and please stop playing Phillip Phillips. This isn't f-ing 933. read more

FM 94.9 is "Somebody that I used to know." That song is the reason I stopped listening to your station, it's played out, yet you feel the need to pipe it down our ears 8 times a day. We used to listen to your station at work, but then we got sick of hearing the same crap that Smooth 98.1 and 933 play. Your playlist is weak and pathetic, I swear, you guys aren't even trying anymore. You play the same stuff every single day (don't think so? Check your online playlist). WHY!? How can you claim: "It's about the music" and then play "We Are Young" eleventy billion times a day? That's not music, it's rubbish. Why did you take such a good format and turn it into crap? You are digging your own grave, honestly I'll be surprised if you survive another year before being sold for scrap. FM94.9 used to be my go-to station for new tunes. Now the newest stuff you play is tired ass top 40 tracks that every-other station already plays. FM 949 used to be on my clock radio to wake me up, now I use my phone. FM 949 used to be my #1 station in my car, now it's Sirius XM. Yeah, I have to pay for it, but at least I get a boatload of new alternative and indie music (hmm wasn't there a radio station that used to do that?). Now at work, we either listen to 91x or Pandora. You guys gave the fans a reason to leave, you're like a spouse that has been caught cheating one too many times. I hope one day you will change back to being "about the music". read more

Wow, 94/9, wow. Talk radio from SIX TO TEN!? What part of that is about the music? I've been a listener since the station started, and have *rarely* had any complaints... aside from the same song being played over and OVER AND OVER - but that's OUR fault for requesting it, not theirs. 94/9 seemed to start heading downhill as soon as Lincoln Financial bought them out in 2006, but I stuck with them through that. Talk radio in the mornings, however, is a line I did not think they would cross. I'm now that much more thankful for my car's MP3 player. I would have given one star, but I can't in good conscience. As much as the talk radio thing bugs me, and as much as it's contrary in *every* way to what I THOUGHT 94/9 was about, they still have Amanda, and she's awesome. Tommy too, I like him. And they still do promote a lot of local artists, and the whole albums at 8 thing is really cool. But talk radio!?!? Come on guys, you're better than that. I thought. read more

I am torn on what ranking to give this Radio-station. Back when Midori was working Big Sonic Chill (like 2005) I dare say this was the greatest radio stations I'd ever heard. However, when 94.9, who used to INSULT talk-show hosts and morning talks shows ("we don't need to hear about the weather and stupid celebrity gossip from Morning Talk Shows...we just play music"), ended up taking the thrown away scraps of Rock 105.3 Talk Show Hosts...it was a complete betrayal. I's rather have Static on the air from 6AM to 10AM than to hear Fart-jokes and Christian Propaganda. 94.9 used to bash Clear Channel, when they scoop up their staff ("Jay is a former employee of Clear Channel Communications.") Now, even though a great radio-show with 8 o'clock albums, and Big Sonic Chill, the station is a 1 star, because of their complete hypocrisy. Their new slogan should be: "FM 94.9, it's about copying Clear Channel". read more

Anyone else find some humor in the fact that the main pic for 94.9 on Yelp is "talk radio sucks?" I get that adding a morning talk show is necessary to pay the bills. Howeverrrrr, of all the people to choose to host it, they choose Mikey. I actually used to really like his show a while back, until I felt like I was getting preached at every 5 seconds. It's not like I haven't given him a fair shot. If I wanted to hear religious and far right bs I would listen to a station that is all about that. 94.9 used to be a station that played whatever the hell they felt like playing and it led to a really fun to listen to, unconventional, non repetive block of music. It was awesome to get a chance to hear less mainstream bands, stuff that wasn't your standard radio fare. In my little high school mind, 94.9 was punk as fuck and keeping music alive. Now, I feel that they sold out everything they every stood for in picking up Mikey. Hell, I think we all would have been ok with a morning show, if it was something that the average 94.9 listener would have actually been interested in and hosted by people who fit the vibe of the station. Not only did we get saddled with Mikey and his idiot babbling, but the music all the rest of the day sucks too. Chili peppers, foo fighters, and Bob Marley on repeat all day. Oh boy, what a gem of a station. Thanks for rewarding our loyalty 94.9. Hope all the people the Mikey Show brought over was worth it. Throw out a little Creed to reward them, will ya? read more

I've listened to FM94.9 since that first glorious weekend they premiered. I love 94.9. I understand why they had to let Hall go, though it broke my heart, and I'm not gonna hate on Garrett or the rest of the team for what's going on. HOWEVER. Mikey's gotta go. Are you kidding me 94.9??? If I wanted a talkshow (which admittedly, some mornings, I do) I'll go to 91x for something fun. Mikey irritated me on 105.3, and pisses me off on 94.9. Chuck Mikey, and I'll be back. Till then, sorry, I just can't handle it. And from the sounds of it, I'm not the only one. read more

Who came in and cannibalized everything good that came out of this station? It sounds like any other generic radio station now. The only positive of the last year was Mikey peacing out from the morning show. The show still sucks but him spearheading the suckiness was too much for me. Are there any signature shows left at this point that made FM949 special in the hearts of many San Diegans? They stopped recommending on the recommended page. I recommend you stop airing music at this point if you are only going to hit replay from some12 year old's iPOD and terminate the remaining members of your skeleton crew keeping the lights on. Two stars because at least at their beginning they had lots of variety and took chances. And they will, on occasion, do a shuffle play weekend. When they started this station reminded me of a Bay Area station in the Mid-1980's, KKCY "The City". I loved them because I never knew what music I would hear when I tuned them in. But now I know exactly what to expect from 94.9 Now, I call 94-9 the Rage Against The Nine Inch Chilli Peppers station. Why? -- I listen 1/2 to 1 hour daily and I can be virtually guaranteed to hear one of those "artists". One day last summer I turned their station on 4 straight trips in my car. Heard Rage come on 4 times. Really, that is not variety. And not about the "music". If they don't start taking chances with their playlists I'll knock them down to a single star. I think Halloran has lost it. Whether it is commercial pressures or lack of attention, it isn't what it used to be. read more

Updating a review a couple times is probably silly, but I have a good reason. I spent some time chatting with someone "in the know" (oh yeah, I'm THAT important) about the Mikey in the Morning bullshit. Only "in the know" because he might actually get a spanking for sharing proprietary info, but I wanted to update the masses, anyway. What it comes down to is this: It was either obnoxious Mikey or nothing at all. Some may say that they'd rather nothing at all, but I think that would be more of a statement than a reality. Unfortunately, for the same reason that programs like the Mikey show exist in the first place is the same reason FM 949 was doing poorly - people are generally idiots. Not you, my dear friend, of course. You're not an idiot at all. Really, you're not. Probably. But at the end of the day (I hate that cliche) the higher ups at FM949 had a decision to make: either eat the shit-covered food or die of starvation. I, personally, would take a poo-flavored breakfast over non-refundable death on any day of the week. Life is too sweet to give it up for a shitty reason (figuratively, hopefully not literally. But I'm no expert). I'm sorry, 949, that you had to make that decision and lose most of what you stood for for the past 8+ years. But when it really comes down to it, I'm still pretty stoked you're on the radio. After all, we still have Amanda, Brunch with Bob, and 8'oclock albums. If it is poo-covered, at least it's poo-covered filet mignon. read more

For years I have scoffed at the notion of listening to the radio, after all, they always play the same crap over and over again. This all changed with me when 94.9 came on the scene. On occasion, they do play some music that is of no interest to me (see: The Offspring), but they manage to mix in enough really, really, really good new and older songs to keep it interesting. Also, the whole "Insider DJ" concept is absolutely brilliant. I was switching cd's in my car one day and a song by M83 was playing. WTF? I thought that my M83 cd had somehow magically fallen into the cd player in my car. So.....how the hell does a relatively obscure French musician get airtime in the middle of the day in San Diego? From a loving "Insider DJ"....that's how. Brilliant! read more

I'm not a huge fan of radio other than NPR but I really dig the Big Sonic Chill on 94.9 ESPECIALLY now that Midori is no longer the host....that...irritating, girl-child, uber cutesy voice...eeeek...I just got chills thinking about it. I also enjoy listening in mornings while getting ready for work. I've had the misfortune of being subjected to other "morning shows" when driving with others and I swear I actually killed some brain cells....I got out of the vehicle and all of the sudden I couldn't do math. Thursdays mornings are pretty cool on this station .
