This is such a quaint, peaceful little farm! It's not far from Winston-Salem and perfectly located…read moreif you're heading back to the city after hiking around Hanging Rock State Park. From the moment we arrived, we could tell it's a place that is truly loved and cared for. The owners walked over to greet us, showing us the short-haired sheep, goats, donkeys, runner ducks, turkeys, and three beautiful Great Pyrenees dogs--all of whom seem well loved and completely at home. The owner shared that he's been here since 1992 (a former city kid who always dreamed of having a farm like his grandparents did), and that lifelong dream truly shows in every detail. When he invited us into the store, it felt like discovering a treasure chest. It's small, but packed with thoughtfully curated goodies: handmade soaps from multiple local makers, a variety of local honeys, fresh goat cheese produced on the farm, Amish butter from Ohio, Amish jams, goat-la-to (a goat-milk gelato that's unique to this farm), a variety of meats, candles made by local Boy Scouts, Christmas ornaments, and books and toys for children. What really stood out was how deeply the owner knows and loves everything he sells. He happily shared stories, explained the different textures of the cheeses, and talked through how he would cook each type of meat. We picked up some cheese, lamb, and goat-la-to--which we ended up finishing on the drive because it was so unique and delicious, like shaved ice topped with creamy milk and vanilla. We cannot recommend visiting this farm enough--not only for the fairly priced, high-quality products, but also for its strong commitment to supporting other local businesses (all the products are clearly marked with their sources) and, most of all, the genuine passion behind it. So much of the space is thoughtfully designed with children and families in mind. When we noticed the turkeys, the owner explained that they aren't "commercial"; they keep a few simply because kids enjoy seeing them, along with the runner ducks. The baby goats are brought out occasionally so visitors can pet them, and it's obvious how gently and thoughtfully the animals are treated--the goats clearly loved being petted and even ran over to us. This little farm is the what I think of when I see someone pours heart and lifelong passion into their work. Highly recommend anyone with an interest in farm animals, dairy products, or local goods to stop by and see it!!

We love Betty's. It isn't anywhere close to where we live, but it's the best little store. It is…read morelike stepping into a different era. I love to poke around in there because I never know what they'll have - will it be something new or something my grandad used? They definitely have old fashioned candy, that really takes me back to my childhood. This is the only place we go for live bait. Today they had big gold fish, and bass minnows and of course night crawlers. We bought some of each for our trip to New River. Now, you can buy worms at the big stores, but I consider those "store bought city worms". Betty's has big juicy, active, crawlers! I won't touch them because I'm a scream waiting to happen and they are VERY writhe-y. My husband is not fond of my squeals shattering the peace and he jumps a mile which gets me hysterical. Betty's will have everything you might need for fishing and hunting. Do you know what else they have? Two old fashioned Marathon gas pumps and the ringing hose that you drive over. Someone pulled up and a nice woman jumped up and went outside. I heard the man tell her, "I can do it Tammy". She was fully prepared to pump his gas!! If that isn't customer service from a gentler time, I don't know what is. You have got to stop in here!

From the owner: We have all of your hunting and fishing needs, if we don't have it in stock we can probably order…read moreit.

Didn't ring up right and they wouldn't fix or explain just made it clear that I didn't have to get the chips That is right so they had to do a refund on the 6 bags I bought because they will not rip me off anymore they can keep there stuff if they can not honor or do what's right. I have never seen a company as crooked has the way dollar general is. They must think they are above everyone and not afraid to screw everyone out of their hard earned money. Just so sad. There day will come when enough people will have had enough and there will be all the empty building out in the middle of the country everywhere. But I had an experience recently that--while I thought it was kind of funny in a weird way--most people would be offended. A big ol' gal stocking drinks in the cooler (I don't think she was a FDDT employee; I think she just went around stocking drinks for some soda company) was talking to the FDDT employee in one of those big ol' gal loud voices. So loud that I was grateful we weren't near a cemetery because that voice could wake the dead. Anyway. She was (loudly) telling the employee this story about how she found out her parents were swingers...and exactly how she found out. I was literally standing in the first aisle and the cooler is on the last aisle of the store and I could hear every word. I thought it was funny in a gross sort of way, but I doubt one of these little ol' lady Sunday school teachers would feel the same, and this place is just lousy with little ol' lady Sunday school teachers. So I got my shopping done and decided to get a drink. But the big ol' gal and the employee were blocking the part of the cooler that has the drink I wanted. I waited a few moments while she kept running her head about her trashy family. When I saw she wasn't going to shut up, I politely said "Excuse me, just need to grab a drink". The employee immediately stepped back and apologized (he wasn't even in the way) but the big ol' gal got all bowed up and said "ARE YOU SERIOUS??" The whole thing was so stupid that I answered, "Nope. Not really", and started laughing. Her eyes got all wide and googly, but I turned around before she could say anything else and laughed all the way to the register. The employee--a soft-spoken meek little guy with glasses, was apologetic, even though he didn't do anything wrong, except maybe encourage that woman to go on and on about her trashy swinger family. I mean, it isn't a huge deal, but I would like to go on record that I never did get that drink.
