The layout is somewhat strange, as there are only very small tables for two, seats at the bar, or seats at only 2 hibachi tables. There's also a choice of sitting outside in a counter-like experience on the porch (although there is a good view of the lake). So unless you're having hibachi, forget about a larger group. The food was good but timing was bad. We shared a generous portion of Shumai as an appetizer, as well as a couple of sushi rolls. All came out together, which made it so the warm rolls were cold by the time we got to them after eating our appetizer. I think they were called Ocean Breeze and Green Dragon. We came back a few nights later, and this would be our last visit. While the food was good, service was horrendous. Two of us were there for TWO hours!!! TWO hours to get an appetizer, 2 sushi rolls, and dessert. We were already tired from working a long day, and not in the mood for a two-hour meal. They said they were very busy because they have only one fryer that was backed up, which was needed for the Volcano roll that we ordered. Yes, that roll was really delicious, but not worth the amount of time it took. We made the mistake of ordering the Fried Ice Cream for dessert (it looked interesting at another table), not realizing there was still a large back up for the fryer. It took almost half an hour to get that! For this very reason, we would never ever ever go back. An irritating side note was the amount of pressure that was put on us to order a drink from the bar. Neither one of us drink alcohol or soda, and we both only wanted water with our meal. The server continually came over to push drinks on us. Even after saying we only wanted water, we were asked yet again from someone else. Once or twice, OK. 4 or 5 times is annoying. As I said, the food is good, but we will not go back again.

The chicken stays tender, the green beans still have some snap, and the whole thing avoids that overly sweet. The hot and sour soup is also worth ordering. It has a nice tang and a little heat. I still have not tried the beef teriyaki, but it keeps catching my eye when plates pass by, glossy and piled high. Service is great, friendly and efficient. For the price and consistency, it is hard to complain.

I stopped by at the Meredith location recently during a set break from a live music performance at the outdoor garden across the street. There was another customer already here and one staff making sushi and food to order in the open sushi kitchen and running the front. After 5 minutes, I placed my order for a Salmon Poke Bowl ($12.99 plus tax) and Steamed Dumplings (6 Gyozas for $4.99 plus tax), The total was $19.30 (cash) or $20.07 (card). The poke bowl was made to order with sushi rice, carrot, cucumber, seaweed salad, avocado slices, soft pieces of salmon topped with a tangy poke sauce and crispy onions & sesame seeds. I took my food back across the street to enjoy while watching a favorite musician perform. The poke bowl was a good portion for the price and had a mix of good flavors. The dumplings were also good, dipping into the sweet & spicy sauce. Not finding one, she keyed in three dollars for it under the department "Glass". The total came to seven dollars according to the register not the usual four dollars for the NYT. I confronted her and told her that the Sun was a free newspaper. She took it off and then she said she was a new employee. Was it an honest mistake or was she trying to skim $3.00 from a customer? I am seriously re-thinking doing business with The Laconia Spa.

The upstairs deck is a great place to sit. You're right on Lake Winnipesaukee with beautiful views, and there's a relaxed, vacation-like atmosphere that feels a little more Caribbean than New Hampshire. Add in the live music, the water and the outdoor seating, and it is very easy to forget that you're just having lunch in Meredith. It has that casual waterfront restaurant feeling where nobody seems particularly interested in rushing off. The food came out surprisingly quickly, which was perfect for us since this wasn't even part of our original plan. Everything was good, and the drinks were particularly impressive. They were well made, refreshing and, considering the setting, surprisingly affordable. That's always a nice combination because waterfront restaurants have a tendency to make you pay a premium simply for the view. Our waitress, Emily, was the real standout, though. Emily immediately told me there was nothing wrong with "chicken nuggies" and that I should order whatever I wanted. That pretty much told me what kind of server she was. No judgment, no trying to upsell me into something I didn't want, just a good-natured "get the chicken nuggies." I appreciated it. There is something particularly enjoyable about a place like this when you aren't expecting to stop. We went from simply wandering around Meredith to sitting upstairs with drinks, food, live music and a great view of the lake. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is super relaxed, and it's one of those rare spots where locals, tourists, and people just passing through all mix together. The food is decent, but honestly, that's not the main reason you come here. The exception: the lobster roll is fantastic and worth the market price. Generous portions. Otherwise, you come for the setting. A must-stop in Meredith. If you drink alcohol, try their mixed drinks!
