I am a relative newcomer to the joys of Brick Lane market on Sundays and one thing I discovered is that the cupcake industry is flourishing here. As one possessing a savoury as opposed to sweet tooth, I managed to hold out trying any of those teeny sweet desserts until I came to the Kooky Bakes stall. They were obviously good cupcakes as most of the trays were empty I was briefly tempted by a whoopie pie just because of the name but in the end, I came away with a red velvet cupcake. Rich, moist and sweet. Not bad for a non savoury foodstuff! read more

Kooky bakes is good, glamorous and very east end. They have amazing cakes - the red velvet are to die for and pretty much everything they stock tastes brilliant and engages one to a sugary whirlwind. However, their recreation of the Cronut left a lot to be desired. First, they were greasy. I'm talking heart stopping oily. There was so much oil I couldn't taste the light croissant-like dough that this hybrid dessert is meant to have. So don't bother with the Cronut. Be traditional. The Raspberry White Chocolate Cupcake. Oh, sweet baby Jesus, the Raspberry White Chocolate Cupcake. It was divine. It featured both dried and fresh fruit - which were hidden in the icing and which in the cake is a recollection forever lost in a whirl of foodie fondness -, the icing was not too sweet, the cake sponge nice and moist and injected with a core of pitch-perfect raspberry jam. Unusual, tasty baked goods and the guys running the stand are sweet as can be, which always enhances the experience. They understand the intense deliberation which must go into baked goods selection! Love the combination of sweet (caramel, chocolate) and savory (pretzels, breakfast cereal) and the over-the-top combos. I can recommend the junkfood cookie (pretzels, crisps, m&ms, chocolate buttons) and the victoria sponge whoopie pie. I've managed to hit Kooky Bakes twice in a week, both times to try out a cronut experiment. The first was during the inaugural (and probably only) cronut crawl UYE. As we were leaving D&W (and lamenting our meagre two cronut breakfast), we were alerted to another cronut contribution nearby in the Brick Lane Markets. This was one created by Kooky Bakes, a street food small batch bakery, and since we were in the area we headed up to try it. After navigating the crowds, we managed to get into Brick Lane Up Market and presented ourself to the Kooky Baker himself. This time, the cronut took the form of a square doughnut composed of layers of buttery flaky pastry and topped with a rich caramel sauce. Again, the doughnut wasn't in evidence but the pastry was very light although absurdly buttery. I think I'd have preferred a little less grease but there was no mistaking the result. It was a great way to finish the crawl as by then we were starting to flag and run out of space in the sweet spot. Then, I heard about some more cronut-type pastries being sold down at Brockley Market so we had to head down to try them the following Saturday. It only made sense to drop by Kooky Bakes and have a chat with the Kooky Baker himself. He's very easy to talk to with a self-deprecating sense of humour and a willingness to share his passion. After a bit of banter about burgers and some gossip about markets, we picked up a blueberry cream cronut to add to our collection. Now we'd tried the salted caramel on the first cronut crawl so it was only fitting we added another KB special to the second round. As with the salted caramel, the base cronut is very airy with a great fluffy structure. The blueberry cream was delicious and hid some of the slight greasiness that plagues the salted caramel. For £3 a pop, its a tad pricey but a good all around option. Yes, it's a bit rich for breakfast but nowhere nearly as sickenly sweet as the original Cronut (or the Aussie Zonuts from what I hear). So get down to Brockley Market on Saturdays or swing by Brick Lane on Sundays and try one! read more

Cupcake science demands a certain ratio of cake to icing. Perfect ratio is 2:1. That's 2 parts cake to 1 part icing. By the way. So although my Kooky Bake cakes were good, there was just way too much icing. I'd say their ratio was 1:1. So eating more than one in a day made me feel a little sicky. Chocolate with black cherry was really good. Lemon cheesecake was again all light lemony goodness. The black(berry) and blue(berry) was fine and raspberry on vanilla simple but tasty. I ate them all during the one day. I am very greedy it seems. Nice but not wow. And for £8 for the 4 I wanted more. More wow, more cake, not so heavy on the frosting. I'm fatter now, btw. read more

I totally missed out on coming here with other Yelpers during the cronut crawl, so ultimately, I had to come back here on my own. Located in east London's Brick Lane Market, you can get your cronut, no, I mean dosant, fix on Sundays. I came here at around 1pm and it was still available. Are people put off by its shape? Don't be afraid of the square dosant my friends. Kooky Bakes' caramel dosant was fluffy and delicious, and just the right balance of dough and toppings, not overly sweet. I place it within my top 3 London "cronut" choices. Everything else he had in his stall looked good as well. I'll definitely have to go back to try some of his whoopie pies and fairy cakes. I love them. So much so, I had a whoopie pie from them on sunday and then stormed to their stall at canary wharf kerb on tuesday. I mean stormed, I know what I want. I wasnt too keen on their crodoughs, because the toffee I had seemed a bit off but their whoopie pies are very good. Also proper american sized, the stall owners are always so friendly! (not to say british ones arent but in comparison!...) Yum! They seem to be a regular on Fridays at Kerb Kings Cross and I only just tried them. We got to them near the end of the day so there wasn't as much choice as there was in the beginning but that didn't bother us too much. I had a red velvet cupcake which was £2.50, but they also sell whoopie pies and truffle brownies and maybe other things too for £3 a piece. The price is slightly steep but I'm something of a connoisseur of cupcakes and don't mind paying a bit extra for the good stuff. The cupcake was lovely, a good 1:1 ratio of cake to frosting. I always figure the more frosting they give you, the better - you can always take some off if you don't want so much but you can't magically make extra frosting appear can you! One of my colleagues said they found their cake too dry but I thought mine was perfectly fine, and the cream cheese frosting was divine! Another colleague loved his chocolate chip cookie dough cupcake and yet another one bought the truffle brownie and said it was delicious and very decadent. I normally work on Fridays so will definitely be stopping by here at lunch time again - the strawberry cheesecake whoopie pie is calling my name! read more

In this day of baked good overload- everyone thinks they can bake a tray of cake and sell them for a quick pound. It's increasingly difficult to find really good baked goods, let alone great baked good. Happy to report that there are some rather tasty and imaginative baked goods coming out of Brick lane's Upmarket. They come courtesy of the Kooky Bakes guys. Whoopie pies in original flavours (pistachio & cherry was the bomb), insanely coulurful bars of American breakfast cereal, deconstructed/re-imagined snickers bars, collisions of sweet in salty in the caramel laden Kooky Slice and some rather un-ordinary cupcakes. As many people on this site know, I can get a bit fact-pinionated about British cakes and how they are too dry and the frosting is too sweet. It's nice to know that even Americans can make this mistake. Or maybe my taste in cakes is wrong. Maybe cakes really are supposed to be crumbly and dry and sickly sweet? I had high hopes for Kooky Bakes. Interesting flavors? Check. Delicious looking baked goods? Check. I was a bit dubious when I saw the size of the whoopie pies. The two bits of cake seemed way too thick, but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. We got one peanut butter cup whoopie pie and one red velvet whoopie pie. We also got their signature slice (some sort of concoction of pretzels, coconut, chocolate and pecans baked until it's caramelized). Sadly, I make better whoopies. The cake was SO dry and crumbly it was falling apart. The cream cheese filling on the red velvet was sickly sweet. The filling on the peanut butter cup tasted barely of peanut butter. We threw them out after eating half of them, they just weren't appealing at all. The signature slice was nice, but nothing special. Tasted mostly of coconut. Definitely not amazing. Oh.My.God. The Cronuts from here are to die for. A bit on the oily side, admittedly. But that's apparently the way I like it. I've had Kooky Bakes before at a couple of Yelp events. I was down in brick lane after work and couldn't resist a visit. Although it was originally an excursion for their amazing whoopee pies, I ended up also getting a cronut. I NEVER LOOKED BACK. I had the caramel cronut, as the other reviews have mentioned, their caramel melts in your mouth and is absolutely to die for. With the fluffiness of the donut, it combines to make the ultimate, perfect dessert. I wish I could make them... They still wouldn't be as good as this :( Whoopie Pies. What more could you want. Basically, If you need cake. Or noms, of any sugary kind. Kooky Bakes is a one stop shop. Any time I walk past, it's a definite stop. If you're in the area. You need to stop here too! read more

Kooky Bakes make my favourite baked goods in London, perhaps the world. If I could, I would go every Sunday but I'm overweight enough without that so I try and limit my visits, as as soon as I'm front of that stall, faced with a wall of sweet delicious treats all sense about calories and chaffing thighs goes out the window. Kooky Bakes offers an amazing range of treats - with lots of different, seasonal variations throughout the year. In my time I have scoffed pina colada whoopies, strawberry cheesecake whoopies, s'mores slices, black forest gateau cupcakes, Chocotecture cupcakes, red velvet cupcakes and my all time favourite the snickers slice. The SS is so good you just want to dive into it and drown. Kooky's treats beat all other competitors in London hands down and I urge you to visit asap. And bring your appetite! read more

I am an American and have been eating cupcakes and other massively over-sugared baked goods since I knew how to get my fat fingers on them. All I have to say is the Pistachio Cherry whoopie pie is PERFECTION. I stopped in my tracks when I took my first bite. I gestured to my boyfriend to be silent in order to best relish the crazy synapses that were overtaking my brain. And after seeing my face, he tried some and we quickly started fighting over the rest of it (when he initially said he didn't want any). I'm back in Chicago now and almost 3 weeks later, I am still drooling as I think about the rich pistachio flavor (people never put enough pistachio flavoring in!) within a not-too-sweet and superbly moist but also wonderfully crumbly-textured cake sandwiching the most balanced tart and genuine-tasting whipped cherry frosting EVERRRR. I wanted to die. Tragically, we were too full to try anything else. But for the Olympics, they had a special gold medal cupcake that had the most extraordinary shimmery gold frosting on it! Looked SO ingenious and classy. I REALLY wanted it. Every time I'm in London, I am going to hit up Kooky Bakes. And next time, I will skip lunch! read more
