Zero Quality Control, Repeated Mistakes…read more My experience with this tailor involved two separate instances of service failure on the same suit, resulting in wasted time, significant inconvenience, and double the cost of alterations. I strongly advise prospective customers to seek a different, more reliable establishment. First Incident (June - Pants Alteration Failure): Bought a suit for my graduation and they forgot to take in the pants. When I pointed out the error, the staff attempted to justify the fit by claiming it was "supposed to be loose," despite the result being clearly incorrect and unwearable. Second Incident (November - Jacket Alteration Failure): I returned in November for the same suit, this time, for the jacket to be taken in. The tailor correctly measured the jacket, but failed to write the measurements onto the slip. When I picked up the suit, the jacket had not been altered at all. Due to these two separate and avoidable errors, I am now forced to rush to a different tailor at the last minute to have the jacket fixed correctly, having to pay for the required alterations TWICE. The consistent lack of attention to detail and failure to follow basic process management makes this establishment impossible to recommend if you need professional, reliable, and timely service.

But you'll probably end up wearing the Ascot Chang shirts more than anything else in your closet -- they fit perfectly. The price is worth it to me because I'd rather pay $100-something for a piece of clothing that fits just right and is exactly what I want (and that I wear all the time) rather than $60 for a shirt that is neither (and that I don't like wearing). When I was a poor student living in New York, I would occasionally walk by the Ascot Chang shop on 57th, and I remember thinking those shirts were just the most bespoke thing on earth. Now that I can afford the occasional splurge, I have to say that everything about Ascot Chang is as great is I imagined it would be. The service is old-worldly and wonderful. You can choose between literally hundreds of different fabrics, patterns, etc. They take so many measurements -- necessary because no one except maybe Denzel Washington is actually symmetrical. They even measure the size of my watch so that the left cuff can hang at the same length as my right. You choose from a dozen different collars, cuffs; you choose whether you want a pocket, whether you want a seam here or a pleat there -- it's actually amazing to see how the subtle differences affect the overall shirt. I first ordered my shirts at the shop in Hong Kong (the Prince Building shop, not the one at the Peninsula Hotel). Now, when I need more, I wait for my Hong Kong tailor to make his rounds twice a year in major US cities. He charges the Hong Kong price, which is about 20% less than the US shops, and the shirts are made by the same people using the same fabrics. If you email the Hong Kong store, you can find out when their tailors will be in your city.

House of Fashion now sells their merchandise from a home basement rather than a store (yes they have a home sales license ~ I asked) so they are now more convenient to get to for people who live in Staten Island than those of us who live in Brooklyn (but it was actually kind of fun to take the Staten Island Ferry and then the S44 bus there).
