Brussels's Saint Catherine area is just outside the main tourist zone and full of wonderful local eateries, including Kom Bij Ma. I'm not sure what the name means, but this charming and unpretentious restaurant serves up delicious classic Belgian cuisine at wallet friendly moderate prices(for middle class travelers). Inside is a warm, wooden, and modern motif, while outside is typical European outdoor cafe for the cigarette addicted diners. We were the only table speaking English, so I'm 99% sure this is a legit local Belgian restaurant...perfect!
13€ croquettes de fromages Belges...warm brie inside a crusty breaded croquette. Brilliant, savory, and fatty deliciousness for our vegetarian diner.
18€ Carbonades à la flamande: I've had this classic Belgian beef and beer stew several times, but this is perhaps the best. The tender, moist, and hearty beef melts in your mouth. Ask for extra bread to soak up that robust, rich, and sensual sauce.
24€ Moules Kom Bij Ma: mussels in a perfect broth of crème, tarragon, mushrooms, and paprika. A kilo of hearty mussels drenched in a heavenly, creamy and aromatic broth.
Every plate was accompanied by a bowl of fabulous Belgian frites. The beer and wine list had a good variety; beers started at 3€ish. I think one of the owners doubled as our server, whom was extraordinarily friendly, though that may have been because we had a fluent French speaker dining with us. Either way, definitely eat here if you're in search of authentic Belgian food! read more
