I happen to go here for a special event. It was a Holiday Wine and Food tasting event. The staff was beyond friendly and the items that were included with the tasting were high quality but all were pretty much under 20 bucks. I was surprised to see so many quality wines at that price point. As we were scrolling around the grocery store all the staffs speak to you and have smiles on their face. I will definitely come back and do some shopping because I did check out their beer while I was here and it's about time for some Christmas Ale. I would definitely check this locally owned place out.

We had two wraps, lentil soup, a Lebanese burger, grape leaves, kibbe, and baklava. I would note only that the wraps (pita or lavash) were fairly thin, so grab an app or a side if that's your choice for a main. Lavash wraps are larger than pitas. It's a shame that they don't offer a falafel lavash wrap, but there are lots of other choices on the extensive menu. The clientele included lots of Arabic families, a wonderful testament to the excellent authentic food offered at Sidon. We also stopped into their market and found it to be a bustling place - large, clean, brightly lit, with tons of options and so many freshly-prepared foods. Staff were efficient and friendly. Not sure if these were supposed to be Anda rolls??? I think they were frozen things from Gordon's. Asian, yes, but not Indian (at least not from my perspective). The pakoras were rather dried out and cold. the chutneys didn't help very much. There were no little bowls to put the chutney in. That's kind of disappointing. There was no raita. There were no pickles. I kind of think of all of these things as being staples, or non-negotiables on Indian buffets. The 2 chutneys were (I think) a mint and the other was a tamarind. They were both pretty watery and not very flavorful. They had 2 masalas, 1 chicken and the other was a paneer. These were passable, but I've had better. The other entree was a goat curry that was pretty good to, but nothing had any real heat or spice. The kitchen was playing it safe, I guess. The rice was pretty good. Oh, I think they had some tandoor chicken pieces, but it was pretty dry. All in all, not the best I've had, but passable. Erie, Michigan is not exactly a booming metropolis or Haven for culturally diverse food, but tucked away unassuming off the highway is a hidden gem known aw Erie IGA. I was able to find some eastern European Staples and oddities. Think big lots meets a flea market for groceries and booze. They do have fresh produce and fresh meats, (and typically even fresh pizza) but a lot of what they have is odd overstocked nearly expired items. Not to complain, because expiration dates are just dates that say best used by... They aren't truly expired. And as a bargain hunter, I love paying half the amount for food that is still perfectly fine. Let's talk booze, beer, and wine. This place is staffed Floor to ceiling in one section full of bargain and bizarre. alcohol options. If you have never been here, you have to go in to understand what I am talking about. When I throw parties, this is my stop for a way to cheaply pump my guess full of drunken delight. They also have some houseware stuff sprinkled in between the nearly expired freezer food, and the Eastern European soup options. My husband and I spent over an hour just looking at everything. We went in to pick up some cabbage on our way home from an event a few years back and left with $100 worth of food and alcohol that looks more like $300 worth. I'm not sure if the owner is Russian or Ukrainian, but he was cool is hell. I picked up the best frozen spinach pies I have ever had. They had blitzes and my favorite kosher split pea soup in the freezer. We try to go back every three months or so even though it's completely out of our way just so we can see what cool finds they have procured. The days of small grocery stores are numbered, but every time I see one I go in. And usually, I keep going back. Maybe it's the nostalgia, maybe it's the 1950s housewife in me, but I love a good small town grocery store.

(BTW, I'm not sure what happened to the Taiwanese place next door, but they've been closed for a few weeks now. I'm still trying to figure out if it's temporary or permanent) Anyone who's dined out enough times in Toledo will more likely tell you Toledo weirdly -- I use the term affectionately -- has very good Mediterranean/Middle-Eastern cuisine. You get a wide variety of them, too, such as those of mom-n-pop markets that offer lunch menus, and you also get the nice, family-style sit-down restaurants too. Most of them are very good. Al Nur falls into the former category. What's interesting about them is that their grocery consist of Middle-Eastern, Pakistani and Indian items. And let me tell you, most of their items are VERY well-priced. I don't have much experience with Middle-Eastern groceries so I can't say much about them, but I'm certainly going to try them out (probably with my coworker's help) next time I'm in need of some ethnic groceries. First visit, I ordered their "mixed grill" lunch, which is their version of the kebab combo plate. Came with 3 different skewers of meat over bed of rice and a side salad. Chicken Tawook and (lamb, I believe) shawarma were excellent. Taste I was definitely widely used to. Beef kafta however, I have to mention, had a slightly different spice/seasoning to it. It reminded me of the taste of an Iraqi restaurant I visited in D.C. a few years ago. It was a place my family and my wife's sister's family tried, and I remember my wife was slightly put off by the very strong spice aroma the restaurant had. In my own experience, "Middle-Eastern" labeled places seem to have slightly stronger aroma than those that are labeled "Mediterranean." A quick research will show that it may be because of the availability and usage of different ingredients of spices in different regions. I have the privilege of working/having worked with people of different ethnic background, and I love consulting them about similarities and differences between them. This particular coworker who was born in Pakistan, but had many years of growing up in Kuwait, where his father worked, tells me beef at Al Nur reminds him of what he calls "authentic" Middle-Eastern food from his childhood. Of course, you'll find regions in the States where Middle-Easterners segregate, where you'll have access to their authenticity, but it's certainly not something that's viewed as widely available, IMO. I can tell you right now that it's not going to be for everyone, just like strong-spiced Indian/Pakistani food aren't. But those of us who have the palate for them, I think it's a treat that we now have another Middle-Eastern option in Al Nur. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go pick me up a couple sandwiches for dinner. I've been salivating for them this whole time I was writing about them.

Whatever the owner said on FB, he's apologized for, so let's review the store, not comment on what the owner said. He who is without fault, cast the first stone.
