Koko Black is a premium Australian chocolatier founded in 2003 and based in Melbourne. If you walk enough in town or at the airport, you can't miss one of the various places that sell it. I purchased a small box for Gayle (for the hotel room) and then Gayle went for larger collection at the Sydney Airport. That's what you do when you have local currency to "burn" before you head home and out of the country. Chocolates are very popular in touristy places for a reason and I'm not going to lie and say that I don't mostly get chocolates as gifts for people back home. Koko Black is a lovely place to get some of these souvenir chocolates because they have a large selection of items, including items that are "Australian" in flavor, like bars with macadamia nut and wattleseed. These items are in cool packaging so it's definitely already like a gift that's been wrapped. This store has one side as the retail space and the other as a café with coffee, hot chocolate and desserts. We didn't get any of the café items but we did snoop and they looked quite lovely and smelled really good. We did buy a lot of yummy chocolates. This by far was the most I've spent in one store my whole time in Australia but it was worth it. read more

The best hot chocolate! Really, really good. Not too sweet, but the chocolate flavor was just right. Plus, you can order the hot chocolate special that comes with three different truffles. Koko Black is a popular chain coffee shop that sells all sorts of truffles and chocolates, as well as chocolate shaving hot cocoa. They also have an in house cafe where they serve their hot cocoa, both hot and cold, and other desserts - which look quite good! Review of their chocolates. I personally really like Koko Black's chocolate, especially the dark chocolate variety covered dried fruits/infused with fruit flavour. I normally don't eat chocolate, so I may have a different taste as others! But that being said, I find their dark chocolate to have the right amount of dark richness but not too bitter. The fruit flavours come through and they taste more than extract. Definitely would love to try their hot chocolates and see how it compares. read more

I am a girl who loves her (hot) chocolate... And personally, I think Koko Black serves the best hot chocolate in the world! Yes...The hot chocolate here is so gloriously creamy and decadent that I could see myself having a cup of these chocolatey drinks everyday... Forever! Located inside the Royal Arcade, this uber chic chocolate shop/cafe provides a sophisticated and refine atmosphere. It feels like walking into a high end boutique that sells everything chocolate from pure chocolate to the more exotic ones (chili, hazelnut and cinnamon) . We got seated on the top floor and based on the waiter's suggestions, we tried both the classic and the cinnamon (their two most popular flavors). Between the two, the classic was my preference. It was so rich, smooth and heavenly! The cinnamon was also equally astounding, love that the cinnamon spice doesn't overpower the chocolate at all. Absolutely worth the premium price of $7.50 per cup! For a shop that is devoted to chocolate, Koko Black is definitely a must visit especially if you are also a chocolate lover. This is where you go on a chilly and gloomy day to feel sophisticated and treat yourself. I got the hot chocolate as well as bought some of the chocolates to go. The chocolate prices are that of any specialty chocolate shop where you're just trying to get someone a nice gift or you're throwing a small dinner party. They had a rose and pear dark chocolate that I really really enjoyed. The hot chocolate was really good but a little sweet for my particular liking but you can get different kinds, so I probably should've gotten a more bitter one. The consistency was on point though. I can not remember for the life of me the waiters name and or the people at the counter but they were all so kind and helpful! Love love love the hot chocolate here. We tried the iced chocolate, belgium chocolate, cinnamon chocolate, light hot chocolate and soy hot chocolate. My personal favorite is the light hot chocolate. The iced chocolate and belgium choclate were too strong and sweet, so you get sick of it after a while. The cinnamon chocolate is pretty good, but if you're not a fan of cinnamon, this may not be right for you. The soy hot chocolate has a rather interesting taste, but I find it lacking in sweetness. The light hot chocolate as the best blend of sweetness and doesnt make you feel too sick after that. We also had the dessert degustation where they served us a couple of small cakes to try. They were all yummy and I dont think you can go wrong with any of the great selection. I wanted to try the truffles, but was too full by the end to get any :( Would definitely love to come back here again. Also, if you sit on the second floor, the seats by the window side give you a great view of the people walking along the arcade downstairs :) read more

Oh Koko! I have been here many times now for hot chocolate but today was the first time for desserts. I came with a friend and we had the chocolate Belgium ice-cream w/ chocolate praline & soil and the baked chocolate tart w/ anglaise, plus two hot chocolates. The praline was incredibly yummy with the ice-cream and the vanilla anglaise was the ideal pairing with the chocolate tart. This establishment can get quite busy, yet the ambience feels like a high tea kind of environment. The customer service is rather faultless. Anyway, it's become a tradition somehow for us. We always grab a drink at Koko Black when he gets down here. I usually have a hot chocolate and a few slices of their chocolate cake (yep only a few!) and I've got to say that they do alright actually. This store is quite busy. After all, it's in the heart of the CBD in the GPO with almost all the shopping Melbourne has to offer in close proximity. I'll confess a secret that may see me shunned by society. I don't like chocolate. I don't particularly like anything sugary. So I preface my review of Koko Black's with the fact that I did not want to be there. So my first impression? It's chocolatey. You're greeted with the sights and smells of all thing chocolate, so if that's your thing, you'll be salivating from the start. The atmosphere is nice, cosy and a little old world European. I went for an infused hot chocolate (chilli) and some salted caramel and I'd be lying if I didn't say I really liked it. My companions were very much over the moon with their selections, which were seasonal tasting plates. All in all, we were a very contented table making a lot of of happy noises. Not that anyone noticed, because that seems to be about par for Koko Blacks. I left with the satisfaction of being pleasently surprised and more than a little hyper from the excess of sugar. Of all the big boys in town (Haighs, etc.), Koko Black makes the best artisan chocolates. I buy a box of 24 every time I'm in town. The flavors are pronounced but balanced and not overpowering, like other places. My favorites are the chili, rapsberry puree, and salted caramel -- all with dark chocolate, but they make milk, too. If you need a quick fix you can get a little paper pouch with a couple treats, around $2.10 per piece. Definitely get a tote bag to flash around; it's like the Tiffany's bag of chocolate. read more

This place exceeded my expectations in taste, which made the fact that they are a little pricey a little easier to swallow. Service was ok, average for what I saw in Australia in that I do notice a difference in overall service compared to that I receive when I go out here in the US. Makes me wonder if the fact that servers in Australia don't necessarily work for tips has something to so with it. However, I digress. Koko Black has always sounded to me a bit like the name of an 80s Bond villain. You know, the girl Bond sleeps with before ending up with the heroine. This wouldn't be relevant to the real Koko Black, except for the fact that they actually are masters of temptation, and their chilli-flavoured hot chocolate could quite easily be described as wicked. (Or possibly licensed to kill, come to think of it.) Probably Melbourne's most famous chocolatier, Koko Black has got a few stores scattered around the place, the best of which might be the store on the Royal Arcade in Melbourne's CBD. Offering a large range of upscale chocolates, and some gargantuan chocolate drinks, Koko Black is probably a bit too pricey and a bit too rich for it to be an everyday experience for most people. That said, if you've got the cash and you're after a little decadent self-indulgence, it's probably more convenient than stealing a nuclear weapon. read more
