It is probably the best flavours I have had at a Japanese restaurant in Germany, to date. It's a decent sized restaurant with two floors of seating. It's simple but tastefully decorated. The waiter was very friendly and quick to serve and answer questions. The menu is quite extensive and there is plenty of sushi, sashimi, yakitori, udon, tempura and other Japanese dishes. I ordered a Nagoya sushi / sashimi combo, miso soup and a soft shell crab roll. We were sharing this across two people and it was more than enough food for that. The food arrived quickly and I loved my miso soup. It was intense in flavour and tasted delicious. The sashimi was of good quality and the soft shell crab roll was crispy and delicious also. The other two people had different dishes and they equally enjoyed their meals. We sent back three empty plates. Prices are reasonable and the quality high. I would definitely come back here again anytime. Great Japanese food that tastes delicious and reasonably priced. Who would have thought eh ? ;-))

I ate the following, which all were quite good, and reminded me of Takumi back home in Madison: Maguro | Bluefin tuna | 95/100 Sake | Salmon | 90/100 Hirame | Flounder | 95/100 Saba | Mackerel | not scoring, it wouldn't be fair, I just don't care enough for mackerel Hokkigai | Clam | 90/100 Ika | Squid/Calamari | 95/100 Tako | Octopus | 100/100 Tobbiko | flying fish roe | 95, almost as good as real beluga caviar Ebi | Shrimp | 90/100 Amaebi | Shrimp | 90/100 Tomago egg with minced fish - not rated, this is basic stuff, hard to mess up Inari tofu - not rated, this is basic stuff, hard to mess up Overall score came to 93-and-a-third - pretty good, I enjoyed it very much. Sake, rice wine, that is, doesn't seem to be as available in Germany as in the US. I drank the Junmai. For my German-reading readers, here's the information on their Sake, in German, I'll try to get it into English for the majority of readers of my reviews. If I've committed any typos, please tell me kindly. German is NOT my first or second language, and it is hard. I've tried to put all diacritical marks that belong, in the right places. Okay, deutsch comes in second place, the English version is now, first: Yamadanishiki no sato Jitsuraku / Tokubetsu Junmai Clear, dry and at the same time strong-tasting from 100% Yamadanishiki rice and natural spring water from the Rokko mountains. Due to the particularly gentle and elaborate brewing tradition, this Shochu has its own special taste. Honjozo Namazake Elegant sake with a rounded and at the same time flavor-intensive bouquet. The special feature of this wholesome sake is its wonderfully volatile flavor. Due to the special production this sake tastes as it would fresh from the brewery. Tokubetsuhonjozo / Yamada-Nishiki This sake is made from the Yamada-Nishiki rice field in the Hyogo Prefecture on Honshu. This type of rice contains very little protein and therefore gives a delightfully refreshing taste. The Kyusui spring water used comes from Nishinomiya; also in the Hyogo Prefecture. This sake has a very elegant and exclusive taste, a real Honjozo sake.

Started recently to come here for lunch regularly. Food has always seemed mediocre to me (too much…read moresugar, too much salt, not the highest quality in the world for my taste), but it was basically okay, the staff were nice, the mood is good, and the location is very convenient. Today, though, I ordered an udon soup for lunch, which was simply too salty and sweet to even eat. I was very hungry, but still couldn't manage more than 2 or 3 bites. I have almost never returned food in a restaurant in my life! But this time I mentioned something to the waiter and asked if I could have something else instead. He said that I could if I paid for both the uneaten dish and the new one. I didn't want to pay twice so had nothing else and let him take the inedible (to me) soup away uneaten. So today, over a 9 Euro bowl of Udon, this restaurant has lost all our future business. We paid 30 Euros for my husband's sushi, my uneaten soup, and some water, and will never return. This is a type of customer service approach that I simply do not understand.

The big standout on this place is that it has plenty of room, not like a majority of places I have gone to in Erlangen. I am sure this space is needed during the lunch time crowd. Hiro Sakao concentrates on Japanese and sushi dishes on their menu. In fact, their sushi menu is quite extensive. I decided on the Gyoza dumplings to start out with and the Ochi sushi roll for the main dish. I found both of them ok, nothing that I would rate as outstanding but definitely ok. It hit the spot for lunch. I found that after the order was taken, it was hard to get service to come back and attend to us. We had a particulary frustating time trying to secure our bill and get back on our way at the end. On top of that, if running your meal on a credit card, it seems a very slow process here as well, just to let you know (my colleague had a frustrating time with getting the transaction complete). Bottom line: An A-OK lunch spot, not outstanding but not bad either. There are a few speed bumps with service and getting transactions completed in timely manner but it serves the purpose for getting a lunchtime sushi fix.
