During a bag sale, at the checkout, she took out a pair of shoes, removed the tag, and set them aside. They were new and brand name. She rung me up, not saying anything about the shoes, so I asked about them: Are these not in the bag sale? (they had the right color tag and priced at $8.50/under $10, therefore meeting all the bag sale requirements). If not, I told her that I still wanted them. She only replied "you're good...you're good," as in I had met my limit of purchases for the day, and she refused to sell them to me, separately. They were obviously supposed to be included in the bag sale, so she declined to answer my question or engage in conversation about the shoes. Also, while she was ringing up my items, she remarked how I was "making out like a fat rat," and then she looked at me and called out to me: "fat rat." This might have been excused as a joke, if her tone wasn't angry, like I was stealing from her. It seems like she doesn't want my business. To her credit though, I am an exceptional thrift shopper and I don't think she envisioned people with more advanced shopping skills coming to her sale. Sorry, not sorry.

I don't know if the staff can tell the difference between the subtle signs of craftsmanship, Milanese button holes, no taping on the seams of an unconstructed men's jacket, and a schlock job. There are not too many high-end retailers around anymore. Wallach's and Barneys come to mind. There is a lot of high-end, well tailored merchandise. But I didn't see a tailor on site if alterations are needed. Long long ago, in the neighborhood far, far away. I worked at John Wanamaker's in the men's suit department; on commission and salary. I found a cool harmonica that I wanted to gift my boyfriend but was being indecisive about what else to get I remembered the bras! I went to check them out and then I stumbled upon the sale section and that's when the woman at the register basically ran up on me. She said to let her know if I needed help with anything. It was completely bizarre because it was clear she came over just to see what I was doing. There were a few other people in there and she passed by them and didn't ask them if they needed anything. It was so clear in my mind that she thought I was trying to steal that dumb ass harmonica or anything from that janky store. The bras were overpriced, the clothes were honestly hideous and not for anyone under the age of 40. The toys and books were ok but nothing really jumped out at me. Except this woman. It was a very uncomfortable experience and when I went to pay for the items (yes I got the damn harmonicas) she gave me full on attitude. No smile, very condescending "you're welcome" after I thanked her. Just all around bad attitude as if she was the one being followed. I would beware if you are a POC. I didn't get the woman's name but she was probably a SWF, pudgy and had dark hair.
