Do you have a manly man in your life who is hard to shop for? A southern gentleman who loves the…read moreoutdoors but doesn't want to sacrifice style for function? This is where The Fouled Anchor comes in. The Fouled Anchor offers men's apparel, home goods, and camping equipment that is every bit as stylish as it is fully equipped to be man handled and exposed to the harshest of elements. From artisanal beard oil and backpacks with a durable design to mugs and fire starter kits, the urban male who wants to get back into the wilderness can find everything he needs here. They also have locally crafted furnishings and things like handmade ties that give a portion of their proceeds back to charity. When I dropped in to see a friend, it was a rainy Wednesday afternoon. Shakey Graves (one of my favs) was playing in the background and the two gentlemen in the store were talking beer. I set up camp on the luxurious leather sofa in the middle of the store and instantly felt cozy and at home. And although I didn't purchase anything, the staff is friendly and knowledgable about all the products they offer. Now let's be honest, do I think it's a tad bit hipster? Of course. Should I drop the word 'Lumbersexual' in this review? Well, I just did. However, I'm truly happy Johnson City has a store like this and the folks behind it have a great story. The Fouled Anchor has gotten their flag and planted it firmly on Mount Masculinity and I love it. It is the epitome of manliness and Ron Burgundy would be pleased. As am I. You stay classy, Fouled Anchor.

This is such a cool place. I stop by whenever I am back in Johnson City. It rivals most any…read moresimilar shop you would find in another city. I wasn't able to get a shave there but I picked up some great beard products thanks to the recommendations and a cool t-shirt. If you like the more hipster/urban male (not metrosexual) choices for yourself or as a gift, definitely check this place out.

And what they did have was largely overpriced. Other locations, at least in the not-so-distant past, had larger selections. Seems like they're focusing more on clothing and shoes, and their shoe prices aren't even good deals anymore. I can buy clothes at many stores; I go to Academy for sporting goods. Maybe they should become Academy Attire + Outdoor. Seemed to be short-staffed in the hunting/fishing/boating area too, just one employee most of the time. And Marci wasn't overly friendly back there. Took a long time to get service and then she moved on to another customer during the middle of my purchase. I've always much preferred Academy over Dick's, but that divide is getting closer.

I'll lead with my punchline - I should have bought 2 12 pound hand weights while I was here. I…read morehave not been able to find a set either in stock or competitively priced. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of my research and I was not ready. And now it's too late as not living near this store - shipping cost would kill the deal. So we were here during a softball tournament that had us staying at a hotel next door. The tournament had given the hubby a coupon to save $10 off $50 purchase. He had found a couple pair of shorts he liked but not over $50 - and not a great deal nor anything he really needed so we didn't end up buying anything. However, it was the first time I had been in a sportings good store for a LONG TIME - and I spent a while pricing out items that interest me. Namely tennis shoes and fitness equipment (free weights and a BOSU). As mentioned above their free weights are a good price. The BOSU was the same as I have found elsewhere. And tennis shoes - I was shocked at the prices of the Nikes I like. However, I have not bought new shoes in a long while and realize they were priced no differently than any other chain. I also checked out the women's clothing. I am a yoga freak and also love and wear zip up hoodies constantly. Now that I work from home full time, my attire has changed and zip up hoodies are perfect as I transition through the day - working out a couple different times and getting sweaty - only to cool down and get chilled and need a sweatshirt. It also covers up the clothes beneath so I can take the Teams video calls I'm on somewhat regularly. Unfortunately, the only zip up hoodies they had were name brand and WAY more than I would pay. Call me cheap but I don't need a Nike or such hoodie for home wear. Those were about all the areas I looked at. The store was huge and had about every type of sports equipment one could imagine. They hubby commented on pricing of men's clothing and found it to be the same as I did - not cheap but about the same as you would find elsewhere. They did seem to have a store brand or off brand - but not just in all types of apparel - that rang in at a lower price. Definitely an option similar to Dick's - the only chain I'm currently aware of living in Columbus.
