I have no idea how anyone is able to see this doctor to even leave a review. They truly never answer the phone

LOVE THIS DOCTOR! I have had such a hard time finding a doctor that accepts CalOptima, is a native English speaker and actually cares about his patients! He's pretty amazing. At your first visit, he spends about an hour with you, going over everything and just discussing your health & any issues you might have. The office staff is awesome too. If you call and they don't answer, just leave a message and they will always get back to you, usually by the afternoon of that day. My entire family goes to Dr. K and we all love him! read more

Don't be in a huge hurry or expect rushed care, Dr. Kockinis is going to take his time with you to be sure you understand all the treatment options and he explains everything in complete detail. It's not about how many patients he can run through his office in a day. It's about his dedication to helping others and his sincere desire to find the best health outcomes for all his patients. His years of experience as a surgeon speaks to the level of care and expertise you are going to experience. He is super knowledgeable so don't be afraid to ask questions, I doubt there are any he couldn't answer. The staff are equally helpful and kind. Best family doctor ever. He goes point by point and addresses every single concern and never makes you feel like you're being dramatic. Good at seeing the whole picture - so family medicine is perfect for him. I know I've said this before, but he was the only five-star doctor in a sea of one-star rated primary physicians in the Medi-Cal booklet. He employed an RN as a medical assistant so Brandi knows the referral and health insurance system very well. Teresa, the front desk lady, is very thorough and friendly too. Long time since I've had a real family doc. I was just assigned this doctor through my new ins. I come from a bit of a history with GP MD's. My great grandfather and great uncle were both GP's and with my grandmother a RN in one of their offices i spent a bit of time there growing up. I am also in EMS. Anyway, this office (staff) and doc remind me of the way a doc's office used to be. Open, friendly, informative and not rushed is what you will find here. When was the last time you saw your doc, not a PA or NP? Well you get the MD here. Oh and this doc has a bit of a sense of humor and he would have to putting up with my sarcastic humor. Refused to make an appointment for me to do an annual physical because I am not vaccinated. While I am someone who cannot get the vaccine due to prior adverse reactions to a vaccine. They persisted to tell me that due to their imunocompromised patients they will not see unvaccinated. Theresa then decided to try to correct me and tell me that the word biases is not word, which is but it seems as though she thinks I'm an idiot because I am not vaccinated. Not only were they completely unprofessional but are literally discriminating against treating those who cannot get vaccinated. If you would like a doctor who does not discriminate and is up to date on the science I would highly recommend going somewhere else. read more

This doctor, or at least their secretary, is extremely LGBT-unfriendly. "Hello, I'm looking for a new care provider doctor in ( ) network. Before I came in I just wanted to make sure he is comfortable with or familiar with treating transgender patients." "Excuse me? This is a family medical practice." "Umm... I know... I just need a doctor. Is Dr. Kockinis comfortable and/or familiar with transgender patients?" "I cannot help you." "Alright well." "I cannot help you." "T-thanks? Bye." I have to say, this was the most bizarre encounter I have had. Steer clear of this doctor if you and/or your family is part of the LGBT spectrum. Early this year I was auto-assigned Dr. Kockinis by my new insurance company as my primary care provider. I was able to book an appointment with him fairly quickly which was great because I needed to get in as soon as possible. As soon as I arrived (10 minutes before my appointment) I noticed the waiting room was very cramped, full of people and seating was hard to get to. In general, this is never good, but being 5 months pregnant made it harder for me to get comfortable. I filled out all of my new patient paperwork and took into consideration that typically first appointments will be longer than check ups due to all of the data entry and verifying my insurance coverage. I ended up waiting for about 30-35 minutes to be called into the back to be seen by the doctor. Once I was in the exam room, I waited an additional 30 minutes because the doctor was still with another patient. I noticed the rooms were old, they used out dated equipment and the carpet was stained-- really gross to see in an environment that should be sterile. Once the doctor came in, he was very friendly and personable. We started talking about why I came that day and the conversation starting turning into one of politics and why I shouldn't go to my hospital of choice to deliver my baby (Hoag Newport Beach). He said things like,"the medical business is very political and you're lucky because I am the OCMA President (OC Medical Association)" after which he handed me his card. There was also: "you don't want to deliver your baby at Hoag, they're going broke. I'll tell you what, I know a guy who's been in the business for years; he works at Fountain Valley Regional, I'll get you a referral for him" (even after I had specifically asked to be referred to someone within the Hoag network). And lastly: "Is your husband a republican?" He then proceeded to talk slander about the Obama administration for another 5-10 minutes. I don't care! I'm here to talk about my pregnancy and get a referral for a good OB. I followed up with his office staff to obtain my referral and also requested that it be for an OB within the Hoag network- like I had originally wanted. I ended up having to contact my insurance company, the medical group and the doctor's office several days in a row to get info for my referral. A lot of it was follow up that the doctors office should have done, but unfortunately was lacking in sense of urgency. After all of the work I did, Dr. Kockinis' office ended up telling me that they looked into it and Hoag is not even a hospital option in our medical network.... SO WHY HAVE YOU BEEN LETTING ME MAKE ALL OF THESE CALLS AND WASTE MY TIME? Needless to say I was beyond frustrated. I ended up contacting my insurance and switching my primary care doctor and medical group. The whole interaction between Dr. Kockinis, his staff and myself felt like a business transaction in which he would receive a kickback if I went to the doctor he wanted to refer me. I did not feel like he was listening or that he cared about my personal preferences with regards to my baby. read more

Good doctor practice common, no non-sense medicine. Always friendly and competent staff, much like the doctor.

I've been going to Dr. K. for a long time. It's hard to find a doctor to listen to me because of my Cerebral Palsy. Many doctors sees my chair and my drools and dismisses me. Not with Dr. K!!!! He listens to me and takes his time at talking to me and try to make me feel better. I only see Dr. K. every so often because he says that I'm really healthy. Whenever I need to see him, his staffs tries to fit me in as quickly as possible because I rarely complain of any discomfort. Few years ago, I wanted to go skydiving and I had to get a note from the doctor. He did the usual checkup on me and told me to let his staffs know when I jumped because he wanted to watch the video. Funny guy with a great sense of humor, but when something is serious, Dr. K. tries to get you the best and doesn't take NO for better care. Dr. K. is like a small town doctor, where he really cares. I've seen Theresa being on her personal phone, advocating for their patients, fighting with their insurance. read more

I had the same situation as the previous reviewer, Lauren C. I was auto assigned this doctor as my primary physician at 14 weeks pregnant. Sadie, the receptionist, had me going back-and-forth with my insurance group via phone calls and emails to change physicians because I had Medi-Cal Insurance. I am now 29 weeks pregnant and have not yet seen my primary care physician because this 'doctor' and his staff, Sadie, would not book an appointment for me due to my insurance-which they supposedly except. Sadie told me previously they had dealt with a patient who had state medical insurance and never received payments, so they will no longer book patients who have medical. I have been seeing a midwife up until this point and will need a C-section for my birth plan. The doctor and his staff all knew this. I would have never picked this doctor, but needed a referral to an OB/GYN-that's it. So bottom line I was never scheduled an appointment nor because I have Medi-cal Insurance and their staff is too lazy to do their job. Therefore this facility gets a 1 star rating from me - 0 is preferred. read more

I recently got assigned to this doctor through my insurance and after talking to the receptionist, I decided it was not a very welcoming facility, my simple call to request an ear check took over 45 minutes, the lady who I spoke to would put me on hold and get on different calls, at last i was offered an appointment for 21 days later, not sure who needs to go to the doctor but can wait 21 days and no walk ins. The first time I saw Dr. K, I was not sure what to expect. I had not been to a doctor in 5-6 years. I had gone in for a physical. In that process we had a conversation.... not just him asking questions but an actual conversation about a variety of things one being about my smoking. At that time I was not willing to talk about it but it stuck in my head (the seed had been planted). About a year later my daughter was diagnosed with asthma and i knew it was time. The conversation had stuck in my head for some reason and I went back to him and i now am smoke free for 2 months. The staff was very friendly as well. The main reason I am righting this review is because I was looking for the phone number and was really surprised at all the bad reviews. I know that most of the time the people that have had a not so great experience are the first too leave a review and all of the good experiences are just passed over. I like Dr. Kockinis however his staff Christine and the office manager Theresa not so much. I explained how I don't have insurance effective next month and they refuse to give me a month refill for my medication. They referred me to an urgent care after explaining I don't have insurance yet. Dr. Kockinis however I know will make an exception on this but not his staff. I will make sure not to refer anyone in this establishment. read more

Dr K was my doc for 15 years. Was the BEST! I haven't seen him in 7 years because of insurance issues but I am so excited that im going to be a patient again because he IS personable and does care. And its true about HOAG! You are just a number, I have plenty of stories about Hoag. Fountain Valley Rocks! Had my hysterectomy there, personable and caring attention from my Gyn Dr & surgeon Dr Samimi, He was just like Dr K. Dr. K told me to surf more and put me on a healthy diet way back in the 90s for fibromylagia before Doctors even knew what it was..And for talking politics, just proves hes personable and cares about our country and YOU! read more

Dr. K has been my doctor for under a year now. I had to find a new doctor after mine went on sabbatical to another country. I was dismayed as I have some chronic conditions and didn't want to have to start all over again with a new doctor. The first thing I liked about his office is that it doesn't have the feel and atmosphere of a cold medical office. It's warm and inviting. The staff is always kind and courteous. My only complaint is a privacy issue. You can hear them discuss other patients, and one had quite an embarrassing issue! When I come in for an appointment, I never wait more than 10 minutes to see the doctor. Except on one occasion when they so kindly slipped me in between patients. I just had to wait until he had a moment. I was so grateful for them slipping me in because the doctor sent me straight to the ER. (I am fine now). Dr. Kockinis himself is thorough and seems genuinely concerned for me. I initially went in for something that could possibly have been very serious. Instead of scheduling a bunch of expensive tests and pushing more pills on me, he wanted to try something simple first, which turned out to fix the problem! I was amazed. However, when he thinks it's serious, he takes action. He sent me to the ER recently, to a hospital where he knew the doctors. He called ahead of time and they took me right in and gave me the 5 star treatment! I like having a doctor who is well respected among his peers. I would recommend Dr. K. to anyone looking for a great doctor in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. I hope my review was helpful. read more

I found this office because it was initially close to where I live and took my insurance. I have since referred three other people to his office that like the Dr as well. I have found that I absolutely love the doctor himself as well as his wife in the office! I do, however, think his receptionist staff could use some customer service training: politeness, professionalism, and returning phone calls in less than a two week time frame. Otherwise, the Dr himself really cares about you, doesn't rush you, and will listen to what's going on. read more

Worst experience I've ever had with a Doctors office. The staff is all over the place and the P.A. Theresa is so rude and condescending. I wouldn't recommend this office to my worst enemy!! The worst part is that their scheduling, or lack thereof didn't even give me the opportunity to actually make it to their office! HOT MESS!! staff has NO bedside manner and they are all over the place when it comes to your paper work. I was BERATED by office manager while I was driving on the way to my appt. to see a cardiologist with my new diagnoses of a 4.3 cm thoracic aorta aneurysm with high blood pressure and believe it or not it was over my blood test. I was checking to see if their office had received them back yet and/or if they had forwarded them. Unfortunately, I had interrupted their lunch (12:52pm) and they where nun to happy, as a matter fact, it has now come to my attention that their lunch hour is from 12 to 230 and at that time they will then consider your health even though my cardiovascular doctor's appointment was at 1:30, moreover, this all took place with in a week from emergency room to primary care Dr. Kockinis to referral to cardiologist to and having blood test done and not to mention, I'm not feeling well all week due to my health situation. By the way, they DO NOT have an exchange it is the receptionists in the office, with this in mind, I asked if she could check and see if my blood test where in and due to her english as a second language she was completely confused as to what I was saying, she kept thinking the other doctor ordered it and had no idea what I was asking for, I used the term "no at the time we didn't know if it was a life or death situation" hence, the unprofessional foul disturbing phone call I received from the office manger. She proceeded to tell me not to call her staff and tell them I have a life or death situation. Above all, my cholesterol levels showed high in last blood test and I just got done with breast cancer. I did call back and ask for Dr. Kockinis to call me because I was extremely upset as how I was treated. it has been a week and I have not heard from him yet and I just found out that the blood test results finally made it to the cardiologist the next day after my visit. Incidentally, upon my first visit 5 months ago I signed several medical record release forms they never sent them out and they could not even locate them, in addition, upon this recent visit my insurance showed that they were not my primary care doctor and I had to remind them that I was already their patent. Of course upon calling the insurance, the second time, I had to get on the phone and straighten it out. Other than that they gave up. By the way, be prepared to take two hours out of your day when you go for the doctors appointment. I would have rated one star, although, I really liked the doctor even though he has a lot to say. read more

Most comfortable and pleasant doctor's office I've ever had! The worst I've ever had to deal with is a slight wait at the end of a day.

During my first visit Dr. Kockinis, and his staff seemed okay. I was wary, but Dr. Kockinis assured me that I'd receive the respect and time I deserved as a patient. The office manager was on the phone when I first arrived for about 15 minutes, discussing personal topics with a patient I assume. I stood there waiting for my new patient paperwork. Dr. Kockinis seemed nice, but I was misdiagnosed, I don't really blame him, as it wasn't really an area of his expertise. He did refer me to a specialist, who was a complete nightmare. Approximately two months after my first visit after getting another referral and being seen I ended up in the ER with an issue related to why I went to see Dr. Kockinis in the first place. The ER gave me a CT scan and full blood work up. The doctor on duty stated she would send my results to Dr. Kockinis so he was aware that I was seen, and I was to make a follow up with him, concerning the abdominal pain. I called the office to schedule an appointment and at first spoke with a receptionist, that kept putting me on hold as she couldn't seem to locate my file or CT results. I waited for ten minutes until she got back on the line, just for her to say that I needed to speak with the office manager to schedule an appointment. I asked her why I needed to speak with a manager just to schedule. Instead of answering my question she just repeated herself, that I needed to speak with the manager. I was put on hold again for five minutes when the office manager picked up. I again verified my info for the third time, and told her why I wanted to make an appointment. Her response was, "it sounds like you just need a referral to a GI doctor." I told her I didn't want a referral until the primary doctor checked me out and said it was necessary to be referred to a specialist. The manager stated that her computer was taking a long time to load when she was supposedly looking for my file/CT results. I told her I had copies that I'd bring, so even if she didn't get them I would have them. Her tone of voice changed. She said, "we're packed here today, but we were trying to squeeze you in since you're only able on Mondays." At no time during this 30 minute phone call to schedule a simple appointment did I ask to be seen the same day as I was calling. This office manager jumped the gun and assumed. She then began to say that I was agitated over and over, when in reality she was agitated. At that point I stated I didn't even feel comfortable coming back to that office after the way she treated me. She then stated, "it's your peragative if you wanna make an appointment or not, that's your peragative." Again I said all I wanted to do is schedule a simple appointment. "Well I have next Monday at 430 available," she said in that tone again. I then stated that I wouldn't be coming back there. Again she says, "that's your peragative." I swear I was getting Bobby Brown flashbacks with as many times as she said "peragative" in that tone. When I hung up I was going to report it to my insurance but decided I wasn't going to, until today when I received a letter stating they could no longer service me as my primary physician on account of my behavior. Seriously?! The letter also stated they would be contacting my insurance about the issue and would assist in finding me a new primary, and they'd service me for 30 days in case of emergencies only. Um, no thanks. I'd rather go somewhere more professional, especially when it comes to my health. All in all my advice, Dr. Kockinis is very nice and doesn't rush you, but I definitely think he needs to re-evaluate his office manager and receptionist. She made this whole experience a nightmare. I'm still in pain and now I have no doctor. I would never go back just to avoid her. read more

My first time here the doctor is Friendly, honest, it takes his time to listen, would make funny jokes you my wait long the first time because they are getting your info. My insurance just sent me a list of family practice doctors, and after careful review, I selected Dr. Tom Kockinis, or Dr. "K" for short. I'm so happy I choose Dr. "K", because I have a lot of medical issues and he was extremely knowledgeable. In 2005, the balcony of my second story deck collapsed and I broke my back. It has been a difficult journey, but I try and exercise regularly and keep in good shape. One day last month after a long bike ride, I got off my bike and thought something was wrong with my left shoe. When I got home, I realized it was my left foot; it was dragging as I walked. I was horrified. I immediately called Dr. "K's" office and spoke with the office manager, Teresa. She seemed compassionate to my plight and was able to squeeze me in for later that day. Dr. "K" could sense my fear and calmly answered all my questions. He diagnosed me with potential "foot drop", ordered MRI's and sent me to a neurosurgeon for follow up care. Dr. "K" acted swiftly and let me know he was there for me during this journey. If you are lucky enough to get Dr. "K" as your family doctor, you get a wealth of knowledge, info. and care, all wrapped up into one. read more

I have seen many doctors since I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2001. Dr. Kockinis is the best doctor I have ever had. He is the type of person who will talk to you and give you honest answers. I really enjoy his sense of humor plus I feel comfortable telling him anything. I truly appreciate his wonderful staff and the urgency he gives me when it comes to getting referrals. read more

I have been a patient of Dr K's for a year now. I was concerned because I have never had an HMO before. I was worried about authorizations and appointments being taken care of quickly. I will say that Dr K has not let me down. I have had a couple of medical issues where I needed authorizations right away and he got it done quickly. My husband needed knee surgery and the Dr moved fast to get his authorization to a specialist quickly and his surgery approved. Dr Kockines does speak about politics quite a bit and his office isn't the most modern. But I think he genuinely cares about his patients and that is hard to find. You can pick a doctor affiliated with Hoag and pay more for your insurance, go to a fancier office, but I don't think you would get better care. read more

Dr. Kockinis is the best I've ever been to and I've been to quite a few before finally finding him. I grew up with Kaiser where you are basically a number in a gigantic system and everything is set up like a "one stop shop". It's reminiscent of the doctor scene in the movie, "Idiocracy". Then, when I was on my own HMO plan, I searched and searched and visited way too many medical groups and doctors before finally stumbling upon this one. Yes, the office is pretty bad looking and outdated (carpet, décor, etc.), but that has absolutely nothing to do with his abilities as a doctor. He gets to know each patient and has remembered everything important each time I've visited. His genuine care for your health is blatantly obvious and his staff is always kind and helpful. I've recommended him to friends and family and would recommend to anyone looking for a doctor that not only cares about your health, but also your overall well being. Just ignore the pastel walls and old furniture and get in there! read more
