I am extremely disappointed with my experience as a parent at Sweetwater High School, particularly…read morethe lack of support and flexibility while advocating for my son during documented health challenges. Since early August, my son has had health-related issues affecting his attendance. I have been in regular communication with the school, clearing absences, working with his medical provider, and helping him stay on track academically. Despite this, I have not felt we are working together as a team, but rather that I am struggling to obtain basic communication and support. My concerns involve both his PE teacher, Ms. Renteria, and his English teacher, Ms. Zuniga. In PE, there have been ongoing issues with assignments, make-up work, and expectations after health-related absences. My son has tried to advocate for himself, and I have also reached out, but resolving these concerns has been unnecessarily difficult. With Ms. Zuniga, I contacted her to clarify what work my son still needed after his absences. Instead of clear guidance, I was directed back to the syllabus and grade report. When I asked for help identifying missing work, I was told she has 176 students, cannot address individual requests, and would not "be reading a report" for me. That was not my request. I was simply asking for help identifying what my son needed to complete so he could catch up and to ensure he was not being penalized for turning in late work or any misunderstanding from his absences. I understand teachers have heavy workloads and respect the profession. However, families should still be able to receive reasonable communication and support, especially when a student is dealing with circumstances outside their control. My son is trying. I am trying to support him. I am not asking for special treatment or grade changes--only clear communication and guidance on make-up work. What has been most upsetting is feeling that advocating for my child is treated as an inconvenience. I am escalating this concern to administration and the district and requesting assistance, including consideration of whether a different English placement may be appropriate. I am sharing this because other parents should be aware that persistent advocacy may be necessary when students face health-related absences. I hope the school will work toward a more collaborative approach where parents, teachers, and students can better partner to support student success. I have had nothing but negative experiences since he started this high school. Something as simple as giving a locker number to get his credit has caused so much unnecessary difficulty.
