I stumbled upon Known to Man back in 2016 and it's become my go-to spot for all things vintage, apothecary, and beyond. Her collection is as standout as her spirit. The first time I walked in, I stayed for hours. The clothes, the conversation, the sense of community that she has built for the last 15 years can be felt immediately upon entering. Her curation covers all of my favorite decades of vintage: from 60s and 70s laurel canyon kissed treasures, 80s retro finds, 90s rocker-girl grunge , and the best of Y2K. I'm a singer/songwriter who is now based in LA but every time I visit my old Brooklyn stomping ground, I make sure to pop by and end up leaving with so many goodies. The vast majority of vintage stores offer either dizzying inventories of shabby polyester shirts complete with perma-pew--or cool items in good condition that are WAAAAAAAAAY overpriced. Sure, I'll wear someone else's clothes but not her baked-in B.O.--nor will I pay $90 for a Huey Lewis and the News concert shirt. Dolly G's offers a manageable inventory of vintage clothing and accessories--all in great condition and fairly priced. I cruised thru all of the racks, including shoes and jewelry, plus tried on a few things, in less than a half hour. There are plenty of mags to read and places to sit so no need to rush try-ons. I bought a couple of dresses, neither more than fifty bucks and both in mint condition. I even pondered buying a Who concert T-shirt, perfectly worn out and just 15 bucks. In the end I didn't because I managed to remember that I actually hate the Who. Seriously, I'd rather listen to a chorus of Kool Man trucks for an hour than sit thru "Won't Get Fooled Again" once from start to finish. That Dolly G's made me momentarily forget that fact is no small feat. read more

The other day I was walking down Graham Ave when I spotted Dolly G's coming up ahead of me. I had to literally walk across the street because I promised myself I would stop spending money on clothing and I KNEW that if I walked by the display window I would not be able to resist. A cozy vintage store with a carefully refined selection. The owner is friendly and helpful without being annoyingly down-your-throat, and she gave me a 10% discount for my first purchase. Best of all, totally affordable! I got an adorable seventies jacquard dress for ~$70 (this could easily have been $200 elsewhere) and a silk blouse for ~$30. No, that's not all that cheap for "used clothing," but that's about the going rate for the plain cotton-polyester crap at Urban Outfitters and this way I don't hate myself for contributing to the Republican party by proxy, I don't feel completely ripped off for paying too much for not enough and I can avoid the awkwardness of seeing four other girls on the street wearing the same dress as me. When my shopping ban is lifted, I will be back. Also I think the store is closed on Monday & Tuesday and Wednesdays are the best days to go because that's when the new stuff gets in. read more

The best vintage shop in the neighborhood! And one of my very favorites in all of Williamsburg. Why, you ask? Oh, because... 1. Decent prices (most items I saw were under $50). 2. It's gracefully uncluttered! 3. Very nice & helpful girl who owns the place. 4. All the clothes are pristine. Didn't see missing buttons or stains! 5. Good selection of shoes & jewelry. 6. Convenient to the L train & my apartment! 7. Open later than most vintage stores so I can actually shop after work! 8. They carry some men's stuff too so your boyfriend/guy friend won't feel left out. I can tell Dolly G's is going to be a frequent stop of mine on my way home from work. I bought a great cream-colored silk top there tonight and love it. Tried on a few other great pieces but they didn't fit me well, but I know they'll make another girl very happy! I live around the corner from this place and finally decided to try it out. Giselle (i don't know if I spelled that right!?) was awesome: so nice, so helpful, she brought me dresses to try and told me how things looked and what kinds of shoes would go with what, etc. I have never been treated that well in a store in NY! I didn't get anything that day, but because I had such a good experience with her I went back today and got a really cute handmade dress from the 60's for a great deal. G really knows everything she has in the store, and takes the time to make sure it's all presented in the best way (ironed, making sure all the buttons and hooks are there (sewing them on if they aren't!), etc.). The clothes are great, all really unique, and there is definitely something for everyone. I can't wait 'til Fall comes to see what else she will get! Love x 1,000,000. Not only is everything arranged in a manageable way, but it's all BEAUTIFUL! The proprietress, Gisele, is super sweet and makes you feel like a million bucks walking out of there. The best thing about Dolly G's? Things that look cute on the rack also look cute on. Not frumpy, stuck in the decade they came from. Gisele shortens, nips and tucks to make these vintage finds modern and wearable today. I feel so fashionable wearing my 1940's Noir dress. so, about a week before my birthday last month, my boyfriend and i were attempting to walk off some recently added brunch weight. normally, i bike and i buzz past dolly g's on my way to work and have been curious about what's inside. but today, i'm walking so we step inside dolly g's. the first thing i see, i'm captivated by and must *must* try on. its a deep green poncho with the most amazing embroidery. its a slightly warm day, so i take it off and continue perusing. now, i must admit i sometimes avoid smaller shops because i feel like i'm either on display or am talked to about something i have no interest in. and here's where dolly g's earned major points! the owner greeted us kindly on the way in and continued working. however, using her peripheries she took note of what i was trying on and as i made my way to the front of the store non-chalantly brought out OTHER amazing ponchos that i instatnly fell in love with but weren't on the racks yet. now, as i said it was pretty warm out that day so i bid my new favorite poncho goodbye. and here's where boyfriends sneakyness kicks in. un-beknownst to me, he had been racking his brain on what to get me and now the perfect present idea fell into his lap. as we went into another shop, he said he wanted to check out another one and we separated for a little while. he told me later, he went back and bought it (petrified someone else would have gotten it in the 5 minutes since we left) and she was so so kind to keep it there in the store until he was ready to give it to me later that week. i'm so happy she did too, because my curiosity *sometimes* gets the better of me and i would have been sad to discover it before he was ready to give it to me. this is all to say, dolly g's is : - thoughtfully selected - helpful - fairly priced - everything you could want in a vintage store :) read more

This store, and it's owner, Giselle are nothing short of amazing. Great selection, not over packed which makes looking easy, smells nice--not dusty like some vintage shops and she carries beautiful jewelry and accessories from local designers. I'm by no means a petite gal and I've got a large chest, so cute vintage rarely fits me or fits over my "girls," but with that in mind, Giselle has still pulled pieces that work for me and after gaining a sense of my style has promised to keep a look out for some items for me. I think that's some pretty rad customer service, nay, personal shopping, if you ask me! I'm new the neighborhood, and NYC, and I find myself stopping in all the time to peruse the selection or just to say hi to G. She puts a smile on my day and has helped me feel welcomed to the hood. This is by far the best vintage store in williamsburg. I can't say all of of brooklyn. The lady who owns the store helped me soo much and offered to hold onto a pair of boots for me until I could afford them. The store is clean, well organized and the merchandise is a variety of sizes. For once I found a Nanette Lapore dress in a size 10. Only downside is that she doesn't change merchandise frequently, but she is a selective and intelligent buyer. read more

Almost every dress I've bought in the store (and I've bought 5 or 6) has been around $45...which is a STEAL for nyc one-of-a-kinds. Sounds like maybe you weren't in the mood to shop? Should've asked the store owner to help you 'cuz she is spot-on with picking out good fits for people and she has all kinds of secret gems in the back that she pulls as you try stuff on and define your style. I'm from Miami and was still able to find a piece that was weather appropriate which I totally fell in love with, a cute bright orange 60s dress. My roommate and I spend entirely too much money here, but it's always worth it. This is definitely a VINTAGE store, not a thrift or used clothing spot, so don't expect to walk away with anything for less than $20 (although I did get a great dress there last week for $15 on sale!). All of the clothing is beautiful, though, and you can tell the girl who owns the place knows her stuff and selects quality pieces that are worth the investment. She is also extremely helpful (ex: she promised to get in touch with me when they got certain items and styles I like in via the mailing list) without being overbearing. Dolly G's is in my neighborhood and I love to stop by and check out the great selection. Giselle is very friendly, there when you need her, but without making you feel like your every move is being watched. She has great taste and makes you feel comfortable while trying stuff on. She's never about just making a sale, and will steer you away (tactfully) from anything that doesn't truly look great on you. Each piece in the store is interesting and high-quality. And because the clothes aren't tightly packed together, it's possible, and enjoyable, to examine pretty much everything in the store. As for prices, they seem very reasonable to me, considering the quality and uniqueness of the clothes. The recent re-do is fantastic and has elevated the store to be the great looking environment these special clothes deserve. read more

What a Lovely Vintage Store. I visited my old neighborhood of Williamsburg during the summer of 2014 and saw the old Shoe Repair shop is now a Vintage Store.
