Just got my first haircut here with Donna, and will absolutely be back. I have a curly pixie with…read moreshaved sides, and since my regular stylist moved out of NYC, I've been looking for someone who could bring my overgrown hair back to its normal look. I described the cut that I usually got and showed her some pictures, and Donna jumped right in with suggestions of how to maximize the growing out period and maintain the shape of my cut. She instantly made me feel at ease and like I was in good hands. As she buzzed and cut my hair, she gave me tips for taking care of my scalp and what products would work on my longer hair, but never pushed anything on me. This is why I love boutique salons -- since stylists aren't trying to make sales quotas with products, any recommendations feel genuine, and you never feel pressured to buy anything just to be polite. When I looked over my hair once the cut is done, Donna explained how she did the cut and how the growth would come back in -- this was so reassuring, since with my style of hair, a cut that looks 100% blended and clean after the appointment can often have a weird regrowth. Donna took all of these factors into account when giving me this cut -- I would highly recommend her if you're looking for an experienced stylist who knows her way around short hair of all textures. I also love how this salon does not price based on gender, rather by hair length. I've gone to many salons where a cut for my very short hair was $10-20 more expensive than one that would be given to a man, despite using the exact same tools and techniques. So seeing their pricing was very refreshing. My haircut came out to $55 before tip, which is definitely less than many cuts I've gotten in the past. The salon is *cash only.* In terms of what they are doing for protections during the pandemic, I felt very safe entering into the salon. Everyone wore masks, and there are multiple hand sanitizing stations, both in the actual salon and in the larger building. I was given a disposable cape and the stations are well spaced to give the stylists and clients plenty of room while still maintaining social distancing.

My style has always been feminine, with a slight edge--and that is exactly what I got with Donna Rae's undercut. After showing photos of what I thought I'd wanted, Donna Rae took my hair texture, maintenance (or lack thereof), and style into consideration and led me down the rabbit hole. Presented me with a cut I felt was made for me. Thank you Tomahawk!

The best part of my experience was Solomon talking me through each step of the process of doing my hair. I learned a lot throughout my appointment in terms of what products to use and hair techniques for maintenance. Solomon is very professional and attentive. As far as COVID guidelines are concerned they were met. Both Solomon and I had a mask own during the appointment and we were the only ones in the salon at the time. The salon is very clean and chique. I look forward to my next appointment here for a wet rod set in the near future.

Deitra was very nice but the outcome of my hair was just okay. I was referred to this salon through…read moremy partner and thought it would be a perfect time saver for my upcoming week. The amount it time it took for my hair to be completed was roughly 2.5 hours which was great! Only downside is, it felt like some parts of the process were a bit rushed. Hair wash was just okay, didn't feel like a deep/thorough scrub like I'm used to when getting a wash. There also felt like no real detangling was done, not even by hand. Trim was done very quickly and honestly just not pleased with the outcome as I still have fairy knots and split ends. I got mini twists for my style and this is where most of my rating is coming from. Deitra can twist hair very fast which is great, but one thing I noticed is that she doesn't twist down to the very end of the hair, leaving it untwisted and unfinished. After a day or so, it ends up just looking frizzy and undefined for my hair type. In addition, since my hair wasn't properly detangled, there were small clumps/knots of hair caught at the bottom of the twists that I had to snip out. I ended up having to redo my hair after a day and honestly felt like I wasted some money after this experience. Kinda of disappointing since my partner had a way better experience compared to mine despite us purchasing the same treatment and style. I also found it kind of odd that I wasn't asked much about my hair and/or my goals for it, as that's just been my experience with past natural hair stylist, but I understand everyone is different.

Have you ever had an experience with getting your hair done where you are not sure about the style…read moreat first but then you grow to love it after "living with" the style for a week or so? Well this is definitely NOT one of those situations. I was in a rather desperate situation because the woman who usual does my braids was unavailable due to illness. So after searching yelp for someplace that is professional while being in my price range, I can upon Lady Leo Beauty Salon. I was able to make a same day appointment with Shenel, the resident hair braider and after previewing the pictures online, I was excited to get my summer style. I choose something simple and quick, cornrows of alternating size braided back into a bun. This was something basic that I didn't feel was easy to mess up. I did not get my hair washed or even blow dried, from start to finish my style which should have taken no more than two hours took over 4! I read the review of another helper about time being an issue for the, so this was no so surprising for me. After all quality takes time right? Wrong! After weather numerous comments by Shenel about how thin my edges were and dry my hair was (I had just taken out my kinky twists and my hair needed some TLC, which I tried to explain to her), I had to sit through her rough mishandling of my hair. I am not were near tender headed but I had to bite my tongue more than once. They braids were so tight I could not even touch the or bear to have her put them up into a bun. I told her they were tight and to her credit she tried to use steam to loosen them up. This did not work well and I have to take 825 mg of ibuprofen (a throw back from my Caesarean section this past winter). I left in pain and upset because she had braided on the very baby hairs which she complained were too thin. By then I was so tired I just wanted out. I paid the 80 fee ( nowhere near worth the style I received) forewent a tip and hurried out of the shop vowing not to return. I am writing this review a week after my experience because the pain from the tight braids remains and I am upset that I wasted my money because I now have to take out the braids that I received only last Monday! The cornrows which she placed on my baby hairs literally detached from my head from the stress of being braided too tight. Please do make the same mistake I did, please go elsewhere for your braids. Please see the attached pictures as a cautionary tale from my experience.

Consistent, knowledgeable, reliable, and reasonably-priced!…read more That about sums it up! Karen, who owns the salon, is great! After moving to NY, I was very apprehensive about finding someone to do my hair. But, I'm so glad I stumbled across her shop (after several terrible experiences elsewhere). She is definitely the only one in NYC I will let touch my hair! Karen really takes the time to talk with her clients about their hair and figures out a hair care plan and style that is suitable for ultimate growth. She also has several treatments (oil and protein) that she encourages her clients to use to perpetuate healthy hair and growth. Beyond that, she is extremely friendly and accommodating (she has squeezed me in on short notice when I desperately needed it, something I really appreciate it). Also, she is all about doing what's in the best interest of your hair! So, she's not afraid to let her clients know when a style or color request may be damaging to the hair--a very important characteristic to have as a hair care professional! I think the prices are reasonable, and there are no surprises, as all the rates are listed on the wall. I typically get full sew-ins which take approx. 4.5 hours, but are well worth the time! You can't rush quality, which is definitely what you can expect to receive. I am constantly complimented on my hair every time I get it done! So, definitely check out the salon! I've been going for 1 1/2 years, and I'm very satisfied!

Photos were on Yelp (11/19/2013 Yelp removed the photos of my hair before, during and after the service, presumably at the owners request). I've never seen a Yelp review where the option to add photos was removed so this was clearly done on purpose. The service was originally in July 2012. Photos are on my blog (yelp allows links in profiles). Just search Red Room. I so wanted to like OMHH Red Room Luxe Salon for my straight styles but unfortunately this natural salon just did not prove to be a positive experience. I had been checking out this natural hair salon (advertised as a "blow dry bar") for a while and met the owner, Debra, a few times, including at the African Street Festival at Commodore Barry Park, where I was given a sample of the herbal hair & body wash. She had natural hair (extensions) so again I thought I hit the jackpot. I mistakenly believe that women with natural hair know how to deal with my hair. I have been proven wrong time and time again. I had been wearing twist outs for a few weeks, trying out different products, and the twist out I wore to the salon was done with my own whipped shea butter and aloe mix. My hair was combed out a bit with a wide toothed comb (looked like a shower comb) and rinsed with warm water then washed, twice, with the same hair & body wash that I stated was drying to my hair the prior week. I suspect that the shea butter coating on my hair stopped it from acting as a clarifying shampoo. An OMHH herbal conditioner was used as well as an OMHH light oil and I was placed under a hood dryer for about 15 minutes. I had expected that Hair Rules product would be used in my hair since Debra mentioned several times when we spoke that she uses and likes the Hair Rules line, which is also sold at her shop. Instead she used her own brand, OMHH. I was NOT given the option to choose my own products from her collection and I was not given the option to use Hair Rules products. The conditioner was rinsed out and I was then placed back under the hood dryer to recline for a bit with loose hair. When I asked Debra about this technique, since I was getting a blow out, she said that she likes to remove some of the moisture from the hair before blow drying. I immediately became worried since I know it's more difficult to blow dry my hair once it's already dry i.e. Dominican blow outs on dried, roller set hair use a ton of heat to get my curly roots straight. My hair dries really fast. Although my hair was loose (not roller set) I went along with it to see how this dry before blow drying technique would work. During the blow dry no heat protectant was used; however, my hair was blown out on a cool setting for the majority of the blow out. There was no brush or comb attachment used - just a shower comb. I asked Debra about this and she said she does not like to use a comb attachment since it pulls too much on the hair - breakage presumably? I rarely lose hair when I do my blow out at home so I was unsure of this reasoning. Most salons blow out my natural hair with a brush or comb attachment to make it more smooth, which means less passes of the flat iron. The blow out was not comfortable at first. Debra did listen to me and was more gentle; however, I still was not pleased with the technique of trying to blow out dry natural hair. After the blow out my hair felt very dry, which is not normal for me after a blow out. I mentioned that my hair was looking rough and it felt dry and was told that next time I should get a steam treatment. There was a steamer in the corner near the wash basins. Debra stretched a section of my hair down to show me how much she thought should be trimmed, which was at least 1 inch. I said no, I was not willing to trim that much. We then got into a discussion about the knots in my hair, sections of hair that were not really knots at all but hair that had not been combed out well. She wanted to cut my hair up to the "knots". I explained that I have single strands knots since my small curls, some 1/8 of an inch, wrap around themselves and form tiny knots on individual strands. I told Debra that I rarely wear my hair straight so the single strand knots do not bother me. I then began to pull apart the "knotted" sections of hair to show Debra that it was just tangled hair that was not combed out. I did not feel that my hair required a 1 inch cut. I had not used heat in six months and for 3 of those months I was in twist extensions. My blow out looked like a fluffy afro from the 70s, not like a sleek salon blow out that was prepared for flat ironing. I even said that out loud that I had a 70s afro. When the flat ironing started, I was again worried. No heat protectant was used. I ended up leaving the salon without letting her finish. I washed, blew out and flat ironed my hair when I got home since I wanted to make sure it was not dama

I booked with Andrea Samuels because she was described as having "expertise in curl techniques."…read moreWhen I arrived at my appointment she was chatty but did not seem to understand when I showed her my reference photos and explained what I wanted... this proved to be devastatingly accurate. I was looking to lighten up my long, shoulder length 2B/2C curls and to trim side swept curtain bangs. I'm no stranger to edgy looks -- I walked in with my hair dyed neon green and my sides undershaved. I wanted a squared-off shape overlaying the shave that retained my hair's volume and length but took out some weight. I mentioned *several times* that I wanted my hair kept long enough to be able to tie up into a top bun. I showed her a photo of me with longer bangs from a previous wolf cut that I'd loved and indicated that those were the bangs I wanted. I also showed her photos to demonstrate the overall shape I was looking for (mullet adjacent) but only because I wanted the front layered shorter than the back. Based on responses, I was becoming anxious about being heard at this point so I repeated that I wanted to retain the length, again. Her first cut took off the entire left side of my head. I was not consulted about the placement or length of the cut which was dramatically more than what I'd requested. I felt over half a decade of curls cascade down my neck. When I expressed concern I was encouraged to wait until it was done. After washing and styling, nearly the entire top and back of my head had been chopped from roughly 8 inches to under 2 inches, often at alarming angles. The only curls left were a bedraggled clump hanging from the base of my neck. I looked like Weird Barbie with a rat-tail. Like someone had taken hidden rage out with kitchen scissors on a doll, only I was the doll. I was in shock and visibly upset. Ms. Samuels was apologetic and offered a $20 discount. I deferred until I realized that not only was I no longer remotely recognizable to myself I also could not put my hair up or back, not even with bobby pins. I was issued a full refund with politeness which I am grateful for. The heavy product used, later left a white powdery residue on my face and clothing. I have also since salvage-cut everything to above ear length. I trust this was not deliberate. I was also looking for a summer-refresh and instead, lost my curls, my color, and cried myself to sleep that night. Take that as you will.
