Hammerpress has a super unique collection of paper goods, candles, soaps, and cards, which makes it a great location for a niche gift. They have beautiful cards for all occasions. There are tons of fancy pens and hand-painted, recycled-paper journals. I droll over all of their carefully curated candles and unique perfumes. This is not a cheap place to shop for a gift, but it's worth it! The recipient of the gift will feel so special and artsy. There is usually plenty of parking on the streets of the West Bottoms, unless it's a First Friday weekend - then expect to have to stroll a far distance, but Hammerpress is located conveniently close to some of my favorite antique shops.

As a college student I'd look forward to an excuse to trek to KCMO from Lawrence to shop here and pick up some local goodies. They've been doing this so long, you could probably even make an argument that they were kind of the original shop local spot here in the city. Flash forward and Hammerpress has migrated from their OG location to further down SW BLVD, and now to this new spot in the heart of the West Bottoms. It had been a while since I visited so I wasn't sure where they had moved to, but it seems fitting that they'd end up in the West Bottoms as many of the artists that once had studios in the Crossroads have migrated that direction as well, and it seems true to both their craft as printers, and their vibe as artists to be in yet another cool, up and coming, hip neighborhood. All of this being said, this new spot is by far their coolest. From the arched entryway, to the bright interior, you're going to find everything you've come to expect from Hammerpress. Beautiful art prints? Check! Locally made greeting cards? Check! other stationary and art goodies? check and check! Next time you need a card go check them out - you won't regret it!

Overland Park Art & Frame is a great little mom and pop frame store located in downtown OP. I found…read morethem on Yelp as we purchased some art that we needed framed, and I had read some horror stories about using big box stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Framing has become such a niche specialty that it's hard to find a great little locally owned shop these days, so I'm grateful that this place exists. When I walked in with my print the owner was there and he took the time to spread it out, talk to me about the kind of paper it was on, the best way to choose a frame, and let me explore some different options before we landed on what materials to use. He did let me know about the wait as he is often backlogged for a few weeks/months, and once you drop your art with him you don't pay for it until you come back to collect the finished product. To be honest I considered giving four stars just because it was a few weeks longer than the quote and I had to call a few times to get an updated time frame, I wish they were a bit more proactive on that front as it started to worry me with the cost of the art etc. That being said, once I went in to pick it up it was literally perfect and I could tell that they take pride in what they do. On top of that the owner is genuinely kind and passionate about his work, which to me pushed this place back up into 5 star territory. Overall, it'll take some time, and this store is somewhat old school, but framing is an old school business and it's wonderful to be able to support local and get a top notch product at the same time. I'll for sure come back here next time I need something framed.

Hoping I don't have to…read moreedit the review at that time, but just wanted to offer a huge shout-out to Alex and Juliette for their off-the-chart friendliness and help last weekend. We chose Art & Frame Warehouse simply for location. We live across the river in Atchison, and we were wanting to salvage as much weekend as possible without having to drive downtown or further. I'll admit being a little leery of the strip mall location and the word "Warehouse." Most frame shops I know are kitschy little boutiques in urban locations. Once inside, though, Juliette and Alex convinced us we'd come to the right place. We had four pieces framed . . . an original oil painting we'd picked up on a New Year getaway in the Florida Keys. We had a signed print from another artist and another Florida vacation. And we had two original watercolors by an artist from Kansas City, now deceased, but whose daughter is still a good friend. It was obvious from the outset that the staff at A&FW is deeply invested in customer satisfaction. We spent considerable time - at least an hour and a half - looking at options and having the all-important conversations about the aesthetic and harmony between the work and its matting and framing. Each time we arrived at the "That's it!" moment, we knew it. Alex and Juliette were simultaneously adept at leading us in the right direction, but making sure the final decision was ours. Yes, framing professionals are skilled psychologists to boot. As framing goes, A&FW's prices are about right. It's a slap in the artist's face to display their work in cheap frames. In the end we left knowing we'd not only gotten our artwork framed, but we'd made new friends as well. Alex even carried a framed print we purchased from the gallery all the way to our car. In today's retail world, when many people taking your money won't even make eye contact, that level of customer service is truly rare. As promised I'll update this review after we pick up our paintings and prints in a couple weeks. "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." - Pablo Picasso

Denominational preferences notwithstanding, I visited the I. Donnelly Company for some religious iconography. I thought those days were behind me, but life is funny sometimes. My daughter, who is an Avila University alum and also not Catholic, greatly admires St. Teresa of Avila and asked for a desktop statue of her. We have come full circle. I called first to ask if they had an appropriately sized St. Teresa statue before I drove out to 66th and Troost. The young woman I spoke to on the phone was incredibly helpful; she made it her mission to make sure I acquired tiny St. Teresa. Amazingly, they had 2 in different styles. I stopped in that afternoon and the statues were waiting for me behind the counter. I appreciated the eager service. I have to say, that store is packed to the gills with all things Catholic. I imagine the truly devout could browse for hours. I didn't have time to look at everything but you could put together awesome gift packs for communions, baptisms, confirmations, nuns... any Catholic function or person, really. But my favorite items were the sainted socks. That's right. Socks with saints on them. And they had tons. You are bound to find your patron saint on those racks. Anyway, peace be with you.

The owner didn't acknowledge it at first, but her worker told me that he had done it as it should have been but his boss told him to change it. Even though it was done wrong I picked up the frame as I was going to be out of town for a while. I then brought back the frame when I returned to town. When I picked it up again it was framed correctly. However, it had obvious defects--misaligned joints, visible marks, and poor workmanship. I have sent them an email requesting a refund and they are ghosting me. The final product is unusable. I will not be able to proudly display the family historical document in my house. I do not recommend this business for custom framing. I am updating my review based on the owner's response. I did not ever require a 'rush' job.
