What a bummer. I looked up great restaurants near my hotel, and Knock on Wood came up as an innovative and delicious Vietnamese fusion restaurant. Mind you, I found this before I traveled to Germany for work and then to Basel for fun. When I arrived yesterday at lunch, I was rather abruptly greeted by a gentleman who told me it was buffet only, and that I was to get my plate and pay and then sit down. When I asked if I could order off the menu (think luscious steamed buns filled with mushrooms and truffle oil and fresh spring rolls, crispy rice-flour pancakes filled with cumin, beansprouts and shrimp, pork-belly and kimchi stuffed steamed buns) I was told only if I ordered in advance (wish they had made that very clear on the website). They said they catered to the business crowd that wanted to eat in a half-hour, so they only served buffet. The buffet was a selection of eight steamer table items, of which three were completely empty. I got there at 1:15, so don't know why they were empty. All of the food was a mix-up of stir-fry vegetables - pretty non-distinct. The vegetarian selection was $15 and to add the two tiny meat options added another $2. I was sorely disappointed with the meal. I didn't want Thai stir-fry, but it was late so I stayed and ate there. What a miss! read more
