I revisited my favorite local yarn store yesterday after the long year of staying home...and was thrilled to find it was wonderful as ever. Linda is now the sole owner, and the shop is full of great yarns, samples for inspiration, accessories, and friendly chat. I love the big table the middle that welcomes me to sit down and look through magazines or knit a little or try a new brand of needle in the jars on the table. . There is plenty of room to browse the yarns, easy to get to displays. Linda is great at suggesting yarn substitutes or pattern ideas. I'm surprised anyone found this shop off-putting, they might want to visit again now! read more

Twinstah, Gigi and I stopped in on our way to NJ because - we love yarn and all the possibilities of it! I was toying with changing a color in the project I was preparing to cast on and wouldn't you know they carried the yarn (Spincycle-Dyed in the Wool). I started playing with colors and the gal working jumped right in and started pulling different color ways-she knows her stuff! She landed on the perfect color skein - decision made. Sadly, I did not have too much time to spend today at Knit New Haven. It is an excellent little yarn store with a great selection - they had all the brands I love, including Quince and Co, Brooklyn Tweed, The Fibre Company, Madelintosh, etc. They also had some nice sample knits, needles, buttons, and some Cocoknits products. The person at the counter was helpful and pleasant when I asked a question, and we ended up chatting a bit about yarns. Street parking in front of the store is limited, but if you find a spot, you can pay with coins, credit card, or via a dedicated app. read more

Knit New Haven is the best spot for yarns in New Haven. They have a relatively large selection, including cheaper, acrylic yarns as well as exotic, soft yarn or sequin-lined yarn. The store is neat, and the yarn is plentiful. There's always a couple of locals here working on individual projects; I get the sense the people who work here are willing to help out, too. read more

This is so overpriced and also you have to ask about almost all of the prices- hello put tags on you stuff.... Also the girl at the front was rude and unwelcoming, seemed annoyed when I asked about one price which made me afraid to ask for all the others I wanted to know the price of and I just left.... read more

i must say that over the past years of frequenting various yarn stores in New Haven and close by, since 1971, that after visiting Knit New Haven at least 10 times during the last 5 years, that i have NEVER had to deal with such unpleasant, rude, non-engaging, unwelcoming staff ever in my life!PLUS, They have nothing to be so haughty about in terms of merchandise, needles, books, patterns, store samples of patterns and yarn to entice a knitter (which is exceedingly easy to do), to jump in crazily buying everything to reproduce the item! if you want to be totally ignored, and stumble around looking for something to light your fire.. and then have to beg to get some help or advice... then this place is for you! be warned. there are much better experiences to be had just minutes away! read more

Terrific shop! Lots of unique lines as well as the well known stuff. Oodles of colors here to brighten the darkest day! There are fun notions and craft themed stuff too. The owner and the sales staff are brilliant knitters and so helpful! Even the customers knitting around the table are engaging and helpful with color combos/yarn ideas for projects. This is the cutest knit shop that I have ever been in. I stopped by a few weeks ago to take an introductory knitting lesson ($35/hr). June was very patient with me as I struggled. They seem to know their stuff in there and are stocked with a variety of your knitting needs. I can't wait for my next lesson. Just be aware that Whitney Street only has metered 1hr parking, so bring quarters! read more

I am joining the chorus of previous reviewers here who had negative, rude experiences with this particular shop. My review is so low because, with the ability to get great yarns online cheaply and quickly and hugely supportive social media communities, the bar is set high for physical stores. This is especially true for younger knitters. Honestly, if I had read some of the earlier reviews I might have done my shopping at some of the lovely yarn stores at home in Boston/Cambridge. I thought the selection was good and the pricing was fair for the yarns that I was looking at, $16 for Malabrigo Rios and $13 for the worsted weight Berocco Ultra Alpaca. I selected my yarns, pleased to be able to see the colors in person, and walked to the checkout. Everything was going smoothly, I asked for the yarns to be winded and they were very nice about it. Unfortunately, as my second skein was halfway finished, the owner(?) looked me straight in the eyes and asked "Do you have a PROBLEM.....?" loudly in front of the entire store with a tone that you would reserve for a problematic customer at an institution like a gas station convenience store. Mind that I was quietly standing and watching my yarn as another customer was being helped. I have no idea what triggered this type of treatment, but I would skip this store if you are visiting wonderful New Haven and I would not feel comfortable coming here as a beginner. read more

I really want to like Knit - it's local (a few blocks from where I live), has great yarn, and seems to offer some nice classes (and knitting nights). My big compliant: the staff aren't really nice here (and can come across as downright rude). I stopped by to buy some needles and ask advice about knitting a baby hat (the third hat I've ever knit), and ended up feeling really judged (exact quote: "what did you do here?...I've never seen anything like this"..turns to co-worker, "have you ever seen anything like this??"). Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I think I need a thicker skin if I'm going to continue to stop by Knit. Bottom line: Beginners be warned, while the staff is available to answer questions and offer advice, you may feel judged and talked down to. read more

As an avid knitter, I really enjoy visiting yarn/knitters shops to get my hands on yarn before purchasing and love talking to the "experts" at stores for advice and don't mind paying extra to do this. Unfortunately this was a very disappointing experience. Selection was very poor and what yarns they carried were disorganized. Samples were difficult to find and the huge table in the center of the room (taking up most of the space in the store) made it impossible to browse without stepping on someone or elbowing someone in the face. To top it off, prices for yarn were ridiculous with even Cascade Sock running at 25% more than what I've paid in other boutiques. the person at the counter refused to wind the yarn I bought because "she was the only person there" and suggested I come back in two days to have it wound. She was in general unpleasant and didn't make any effort to encourage me to ever visit again. I'd like to think that maybe she is more pleasant with her regular customers. In all, as someone who generally likes to feel her yarn and interact with people before buying, even I would *much* rather buy online or make the trek to Webs than shop here again. read more

A very welcome addition to the New Haven knitting scene! They have everything you would expect in a great yarn store and then a bunch of fantastic surprises (an interesting and intriguing selection of yarn!) Not only is the yarn/needles/supplies selection varied and thoughtfully selected but they have a bookshelf full of pattern books from the basics to the cutting edge for whatever project you want to take on! Run by several knit-tastic women, its obvious that people at Knit love what they do and can't wait to start you loving it too! Whether you are a beginner or seasoned knitter there is always someone available to guide you through a rough patch, chose supplies for a new project, or just offer encouragement! Go Knit! read more

They wind your yarn at time of purchase! That's huge. I may have visited on a low stock day because certain colors ways were not available in every weight. Staff was super sweet let me know about classes which seemed very cool. Nice shop some cool unique yarns but walked out without making a purchase. Needed the colors I needed. This is a fine store and I always tend to support my local yarn store. I've already spent more than $100 there. Now I've bought four strands of wool online (as it's not in the store either) and wanted to have it wound. I was willing to pay at least $10 for this service and accept a few days waiting time (one strand might take 3-4 minutes), but this service was categorically rejected. That's a shame, because I had already planned a project with wool from this shop for at least $250. But I will switch to other businesses for these reasons. read more

What a wonderful surprise! I've started a tradition of shopping at the local yarn store (LYS) of new cities I visit. The yarn I buy is knitted into a souvenir. With smartphone in hand, I found this lovely shop. Warm greetings from the sales ladies and knitters who had already stopped in let me know I was in the right place. Although a small shop, its broad selection of yarns and accessories would fit most wallets. My timing was particularly good: I caught the start of the store's "Mad Sale." read more

It is a great place to hang out, get advice, see knitting friends (who shmooze and knit around the table). I bought a product at Knit New Haven recently, the woman from whom I purchased the product was friendly and helpful. The next day, I attempted to exchange the unopened crochet needle the following day for another size. I realized that store policy dictates that needles are not exchangeable, and the sales woman DID exchange it for me. I was grateful that she did so, but she was so overtly unpleasant, not just about the exchange, but also when I complimented her on her scarf. I would never subject myself to such an unpleasant, negative atmosphere. This is unfortunate, as I will be retiring soon and wanted to sign up for lessons. Guess I will have to order a How-To Amazon Video instead. read more
