Majority of the seats have a warning on their website that the legroom is nonexistent. There are some blind spots to be aware of, and the box seating definitely misses much of the side stage. We used A View From My Seat to see what each seat is like before we booked seats for Cursed Child, and am so glad we did. It was like sorting through a landmine trying to find a seat that had decent views in our price point and getting an aisle spot to the legroom didn't affect us as much. Definitely do your research before picking a seat here!

I came in for a Theatre Elision production and I was STUNNED by the quality. They put on "Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812" and it was one of the best music-theater shows I have ever seen. And my credentials in that area are extremely respectable, if I do say so myself. As a venue for theater, this space is small but capable. The lobby has enough table seating in front of an elevated stage that at first I assumed that's where the show was going to take place. But no, the actual theater has all the trappings that a real company would expect, in a semi-black-box auditorium that allows flexibility. There is a selection of beer and wine, and not much else at the little concession counter. The production I saw was so good that I will talk about it with friends for the rest of my life. Super polished, extremely high level of musicianship, and an infectious energy level to match. Theatre Elision did such a remarkable job with this show that I will probably make the drive from St Paul to Crystal regularly for the foreseeable future to see what they do next.

Our show started at 7:30, and I would absolutely recommend arriving well before 7 if it's your first time. The Guthrie is an experience beyond just the show, and there's so much to explore before you even get to your seat. We had time to check out the Amber Room, step outside onto the balcony, take pictures, and just wander around the building. There's also a restaurant on site and a bar where you can grab drinks and snacks. I really appreciated that there was plenty of space throughout the lobby to sit and lounge before the performance rather than feeling like you needed to immediately head into the theater. The employees were incredibly friendly and even gave us recommendations for things to check out before the show. The building itself has a very modern feel, which was a fun change for me since I'm more accustomed to traditional theaters. I also really enjoyed the design of the theater and how the stage extended into the audience. It felt like there were good sightlines from a variety of angles and made the performance feel much more intimate. We happened to attend on an especially fun night because it was opening night and the kickoff to the new season. After the show, they completely transformed the downstairs lobby into a party! There was a DJ, photo booth, snacks, and drinks available for purchase. At one point it genuinely felt like we were in a club rather than a theater, and I loved it. Overall, such a fun first experience at the Guthrie. Come early, give yourself time to explore the building, and don't treat it as just a place to see a show--the venue itself is part of the experience. But bringing in outside actors when the Twin Cities has an amazing acting pool is a waste. We last saw Waiting for Godot and it was dismal. I was so looking forward to this play. Acting was good but not enough to save it. Mass exodus at intermission. They have also removed the free water from the tables. They don't sell bottled water so it is missed. While in town I stopped by here on a Saturday afternoon in hopes that I would get to go inside and…read moresee this place. Little did I know that I would get to that and then some. Upon arriving the streets in the area were blocked off that were having a community event involving several businesses, etc. Walking up to Capri Theater was an experience in itself has I stopped by a TV crew and asked my thoughts on the event and what they were trying to accomplish. After that somewhat uncomfortable moment I made my way to Capri Theater. To my surprise it was open and the staff quickly invited me and my friends inside to experience the place. A little background on the theater; it was built in 1927 was initially known as Paradise Theater. Having gone through several renovations over the years, a renovation projected in the 1965-1967 timeframe expanded the seating capacity to ~500 and it was at this time that it was renamed to Capri Theater. Today, the Capri Theater is owned and operated by Plymouth Christian Youth Center. It seats ~300 and from what I could see, there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. The focus is on continuing to be a beacon in the community where youth can find a safe and welcoming environment to explore crafts, arts, performing arts,etc. Of special importance to me is what occurred on January 5 and 6, 1979 at the Capri Theater. On those days Prince played his first shows as solo artist. Tickets to the performances cost less than $5 and proceeds from the first night went to Capri Theater. As I mentioned the staff was very, very warm and welcoming. Both James and Graham were gracious with their time; answering all our questions. They made us feel at home and mostly let us wander the place. As part of my wandering I happened to peek into the auditorium and to my surprise, the screen had a slide show going with images of Prince. As I stood in the doorway watching the slideshow, Graham noticed me and encouraged me to go inside and check it out. He said it was okay to go up on the stage and just take in the place. About that same time, he put on playlist of Prince music; needless to say, I was in heaven. In the end, my friends and I spent over an hour in auditorium, on stage and sitting in the seats just taking it all in. A BIG thank you to Graham and James for making stop/experience was the highlight of my trip. Lastly, the Capri Theater is undertaking a renovation project to expand their offering to the community. In addition to making updates there will be additional classrooms and multi-purpose spaces along with spaces for developing crafts skills such as wood working. Check their website (thecapritheater.org/) to learn more about this upcoming project. While you're there, take time to contribute to a very worthy initiative.
