I have come to categorize the K-mart here on island as a necessary evil...I go here for a lot of things but I hate that I have to go here for things, however if they weren't here, I would definitely be at a loss....a dysfunctional love-hate relationship that is oh-so-fitting to this island!!
On the one hand, they DO have some awesome deals sometimes! I have gotten some great workout clothes and running shoes here for awesome prices, and just stocked up on pillows that were also on sale! I got some carpet-remnant rugs that really were dirt cheap, and I love them! If you can get things on sale here, its a great bargain. Also some of their food items are randomly cheaper than other stores, like dry goods and such, so cruise the couple of food aisles for potential low prices.
On the flip side, if you come in here thinking, "I need a shower curtain", or "I need a frying pan"....odds are you are going to be paying out the nose for it...every time I have come here for something specific, I'm blown away by the high prices...for those types of items I try to get used things from friends, people moving off island, the Humane Society thrift store, or Re-Use Emporium, but sometimes I do have to bite the bullet and just get expensive household items here. Be aware of prices and if its not labeled, its probably going to be more painful to ask for a price so just don't buy it.
Another negative is the time it takes to go through this store....parking is a pain, just getting here is a pain (Tutu is always crowded and usually has lots of traffic), and getting around in the store is a pain. Checking out you almost always wait for a considerable amount of time, and once I was transferred to THREE DIFFERENT REGISTERS because they were having issues with their card readers...NOT fun....on the other hand, another time a very sweet lady working in electronics waved us over, rang our items up in no time, and was absolutely lovely, I think she was an angel sent from heaven because that usually doesn't happen!
A nice/cool thing though is they DO have lots and lots of holiday items for reasonable prices....I just bought A TON of Halloween face paint that was all 50% off....so that is a really nice thing, especially during Christmastime because they do have aisles and aisles full of the festive holiday knick knacks. Very happy about that.
So yes, take your chances at K-mart, its very good in some ways and horrid in others....a mixed bag of potential outcomes where you could be leaving feeling awesome at the great deals or robbed at the high prices! read more
