Interior of Kleines Cafe

If you live in Vienna one of the skills you need to acquire is the "how and when" to grab a spot at a table inside the Kleines Café. This is a true art .... as it's not called "Kleines Café" (Little Café) for no reason. I am not going to give out any tips on this skill at all, because I always want my table when I go there and I don't want too many people to learn the tricks of the trade as it applies to the venerable Kleines Café in Vienna! Now lets get to the atmosphere - cool, warm, charmant, feel-good, intimate are all perfect adjectives to describe this establishment.. I don't smoke ... but it's awesome they still allow smoking here so I can go with my cigarette-smoking buds and they can smoke if they choose to ... and this little nook smells just like an old Viennese Café should. (Hey this place is not a Starbucks ...) Newspapers - excellent collection. The selection reflects the intellectual base of their clientele (although I must bring down the IQ a bit when I'm present!) Food & drink - All the traditional libations of a Viennese café are here ... and I always eat the Schnittlauchbrot (Chives Bread). It's simply the best in Vienna. Don't just take my word on that .... ask anyone who knows Vienna well. In warmer weather you can sit outside which is fine because Kleines Cafe is on the picturesque Franziskanerplatz. But sitting inside in winter, that's the total best. Hey, good luck on getting a seat!!

One thing I hate as a tourist is falling into all the tourist traps, but here it felt like I had done exactly the opposite. It seemed like a cool little hang out which the locals probably visit more than the tourists. As the name suggests it's a small cafe, very small in fact. It's spread across two levels with a small serving area. We found a seat but I think we were just lucky, it was busy the while time we were in there. Smoking is permitted inside and they serve a small selection of simple foods alongside coffees and beer. I also sampled the orange punch but I guess this is probably a festive treat because it's close to Christmas which isn't on the menu all year round, although I could be wrong. The interior was unassuming and unpretentious. We sat upstairs where both walls are lined with mirrors and you can see yourself disappearing into infinity in their reflections, dotted around in the ceilings are clusters of 4 light bulbs arranged in squares, I loved them. We ate some sausage and a sandwich which were both good but the real thing which made it great was the laid back atmosphere and general vibe of the place. Downstairs someone was playing lazy jazz on the saxophone, unobtrusively enough that you didn't always notice but the perfect soundtrack to a relaxed afternoon in Vienna.

Our Stammlokal. Home away from home. Comfortable and familiar. But smokey and loud. The best Melange in the world and I don't normally drink coffee. The Spezialbrot is heavenly, and the Eiaufstrichbrot is spicy with horseradish. They take great care with their little meals and I love it here.

Ham and Camembert open faced sandwich for 3.90 Euro. Very delicious

I am so glad I found this place on Yelp prior to my arrival in Wien. YUMMMM-O! I was ready for this to be a smokey bar and everyone was so polite about their smoking. The men I sat at the bar with acknowledged that I was not smoking and that I was eating and asked if I minded if they smoked. It was very thoughtful. I made some amazing friends at the bar who often frequented the bar including another restaurant goer's little dog who would slowly peruse the area for scraps and those willing to give handouts. I had the ham and Camambert open faced sandwich for $3.90 euros. The cheese was buttery and lathered thickly onto dense and hearty bread. This was a huge meal and kept me going for the rest of the night. It was a simple combination of three ingredients but hit the spot and was just what my body needed after a long day of travel from Olomouc, Czech Republic to Wien. This was absolutely a successful find and I would recommend this stop for anyone. A bit off the beaten path and you won't find any tourists here :)

Very classic cafe located in Fransziskanerplatz square close to the city center. The melange is alright, I like the way the cafe looks from the outside and inside, outdoor seating during the summer is amazing.

Everything about this cafe is excellent. I started here in 1989 and it's still my favorite in the Innenstadt.

Nice terrace outside on a cozy square. Ideal for a little afternoon aperitivo. Brownish bar inside.

Everything was wonderful: coffees, omelettes and the bread, too! Not good for people opposed to the smell of cigarettes.

Be warned. Its a small place and has no real non-smoking area. Full of smoke. That was it for us. Kids could not stand the smoke.

Like Demel, Cafe Central is a MUST visit when you go to Vienna, where the coffee houses are a sight to behold on their own. Yes, the wait is quite long. Every time I pass by, there's a line, but it actually goes rather quickly and if you can find something to do to pass the time, it's like nothing at all. First off, the interior is STRIKING, a work of art in its own right with marble columns, stylish looking cafe tables, and paintings every where you go. Apparently Sigmund Freud has been a frequent patron here. Even if you were to get nothing at all, just the experience of sitting here is worth your eyes absorbing. But, oh!--the cakes--and the coffees! I had me an iced coffee that had a great body mixed with a delicate flavor to give me a jolt through the day. The hazelnut cake was airy and fluffy, not at all too sweet like American desserts have a tendency to be! The staff here move efficiently, and I love how there's no pressure to hurry up and pay your bill or make your order. A repeat place to be sure if I were to go back to Vienna. My twin and I went on Sept '25 for our vacation.

The line moved pretty quickly, though, and I waited about 30 minutes. The interior is stunning. I was completely enamored with the architecture and the structure of the building. I was not overly hungry, but I wanted to try the goulash and the apple strudel. Get the strudel with the sauce. 10/10. Amazing. I would absolutely do it again.
