Spring rolls are the ultimate way to determine if a takeaway store is worth returning to, so naturally I had to get one at Tony's. And I admit, I was a little disappointed. Much to my surprise, the spring roll tasted like cinnamon. I couldn't really figure it out. It wasn't terrible as such, just unexpected.... That being said, the fried rice was brilliant. It wasn't oily and didn't make you feel guilty for eating most of the container - which I did. The portions were good and prices were what you'd expect - about $10 for fried rice. Tony's chips were also pretty good - crisp and crunchy; just the way I like them, and with a good amount of salt too. There's nothing worse than not enough salt on your hot chips, so while their spring rolls were a bit strange, you can rely on Tony's to supply good fried rice, sausages and chips. Their hot chips are good quality and they always give us a generous portion. They do a range of Chinese food too here and it is also quite good - considerably better than some of the rival takeaways in the neighbourhood. The Roberts Road location of these shops is quite popular with people on the weekends but you can generally get a park. There's a good selection of eateries here (Dominos, a bakehouse, Thai etc) but I reckon Blue Lagoon is probably the best of them. Make sure, if you get fish and chips, you get snapper as it's the best quality.

I find the fish in chips in Ireland/England tend to be greasy and unpleasant and I gave up eating them when I got older. The fish always tended to be cod which is not half as nice as snapper. Anyway, Long John Silver do a pretty good fish and chips in keeping with the Kiwi tradition. I tend to splash out a bit on the snapper as I find the hoki pretty bland - you can get a fish and chip combo with a drink for about $15. Another thing that LJS do that I only found out recently is breakfast - bacon and eggs that is as you would hardly eat fish for breakfast. They do a basic breakfast for $7.50 and the more elaborate ones are a bit dearer. Good to know if you are on a budget and don't fancy brunch in some poncey cafe.

Located in a strip mall off the well travelled Highway 16, it is not the fanciest restaurant you will ever eat at but the food was good, I'll say the service was good despite one glaring mistake, and prices were very fair. I had the black pepper stir fry with tofu, partner had peanut sauce stir fry. You are asked you desired spiciness; both were perfectly seasoned with the desired heat. The menu clearly identifies vegan stir fry's, another positive. For our simple order the food was delivered promptly and it was hot. The glaring mistake? I ordered a beer with the meal which never arrived, and there was no opportunity to address this until the food arrived, at which point I was fine not having it. Yes, we would return.

Golden Silk is home to excellent food, fabulous service, and even a good show. Plus you can get take-aways to keep you going for the whole week. The wait staff are beautifully dressed, and there is a comfortable bar, should you need to wait for a table. And best of all, this is a perfect example of getting your monies worth - while it's cheap, the food at Martin's is delicious too. While undoubtedly great value, Martin Takeaways offer great specials too. The family that run this Chinese takeaway and fish and chip store are really friendly and recognise you as being a local which is always nice.
