Monday night, a last minute decision to eat out. Choices to be made…read more One of the reasons I like Hampstead so much is the variety of French cuisine. My family spent time in France when I was growing up and French cuisine is my equivalent to other peoples bake beans on toast. Tonight we chose Cote. It's one of our regulars for breakfast but, in truth, we've never been for diner. It was semi full, the staff attentive. We 'of course' all chose Fillet Steak, two rare one medium rare. The steaks took a little more time, than they should, to arrive and unfortunately when they did, the two rares looked & tasted more like a medium than rare. Our waitress was quickly called over, took one look at the steaks and immediately took one away. Moments past before the manager appeared apologising for the steaks. He was professional, apologetic and quick to remedy the situation. If it hadn't been for him, we would have walked out, never to return. While we waited for our food we were given free frites (french fries). He asked if he could give us free starters while we waited, but we declined. The food came back with brand new vegetables and even more frites. We ended the night with Coupe Noir & Coffee, and the night ended up being relaxed and just what we needed. The manager and his attitude saved the night and because of our experience dealing with him I know we'd be happy to return.

The restaurant, always busy, has an excellent menu, offering a good choice of appetizers, entrees and deserts, plus a well chosen wine list, all very reasonably priced. Additionally, the food preparation, presentation and quality are all first class and the service here is both professional and friendly. Finally, I would sum up to say that I have found the overall dining experience here to be very satisfying and will continue to come back here for more.

For a chain, it's actually one of the better ones you can find. It's a good place if you are looking for a quick bite in the neighborhood---Cote's consistency is arguably it's best quality. You will always get an average to above average meal here at a reasonable price. This particular branch used to be a bar/night-club called Playtime, and I admit Cote did a rather nice job transforming the place into a French style bistro. Much like its brethren in Soho, Cote Islington is a fairly large restaurant, so it's unlikely you'll have to wait long for a table, always a plus in my book. Cote heavily promotes its Poulet Breton---basically a flattened char-grilled half-chicken served with chips (see the pic I posted). It was good but not great. Tasty but I didn't remember it after eating it. The steak frites is actually a better choice. All in, Cote is 3 stars for being consistently solid (count how many times I used to word average to above average in this review), but not a place that I would go to if I wasn't near Islington Green.

This place is a fantastic option for solo diners. The bar is massive, inviting, and has a great atmosphere. I stuck with gin martinis all night, and my bartender was incredible--attentive, friendly, and really knowledgeable. He even took the time to show me the upscale Beefeater bottle he was using for my drinks, and to my surprise, didn't upcharge me for it! For food, I went with a light dinner and just ordered the steak tartare, which was fantastic. It came with unlimited bread, which was a great touch. All in all, a great casual spot for drinks, excellent service, and a relaxed vibe. Very happy I stopped in, and I'll definitely be back if I'm ever in kings cross again!

She answered any questions we had and also offered recommendations. We decided on: 1) Minute steak - kiddos liked the peppercorn sauce and enjoyed their steaks. It was a tad too tough for my mom to chew. 2) Burger - hubs said it was ok. Said it was cooked to medium (just the way he likes it), but the burger itself lacked flavor. It was also on the small side but maybe we just think so as we're comparing to American portions. 3) Steak tartare - portion was good (don't know how it compares to the starter tartare). Unfortunately, even with all the ingredients reportedly mixed in, it lacked flavor for me. All the orders were served with chips that arrived hot, crispy and just salty enough. 4) Chocolate bombe - hot caramel sauce poured over the bombe when brought to the table. The sauce then melted the chocolate shell. Kiddo said there was lots of caramel, but nothing really memorable about it. 5) Truffles - hubs loves his chocolate and ordered these. Caramel centers. They were ok. Like many other reviews noted, took a while to try to get our server's attention for the bill.

We probably were the last customers for the evening as they close at midnight as were were walking out. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Started with the escargot appetizer, delicious with great flavor of butter and what seemed to be a basil/pesto paste. The bread that came along really hot the spot. I probably could have gone without entree as I felt stuffed after the escargot and bread helpings. Sea bass was a great light entree choice after the appetizer. Served on a bed of broccoli it was seared well on the skin side. The rest of the party had the breaded veal which was a great choice as well. The dessert could feed an entire table, chocolate mousse dessert was delicious and very large portion for the table... definitely a place that you can count on a solid great French meal.
