David has been an absolute blessing! Bohbi (my cat) loves David and gives him so much affection upon his arrival. He is prompt, reliable, trustworthy and will update me when I'm out of town which is always comforting. I don't know what we would do without him. I love how David pays attention to detail. He wanted to make sure that she knew my little guy: from his foods and his routine down to the way he likes to play. I never worried a minute while I was out of town because he had everything under control. I used to rely on friends to help me out, but after finding condoms in my bed I decided to hire someone so I would know for sure that every single day I was gone my cats were getting love. I tried another service, but they were so challenging to schedule with and they never sent the same person. David has been second family to my kitties for 4 years now, since I adopted them, and he's fantastic. He takes care of the basics, but then he also spends time loving and playing. When I freak out because I miss them he handles me. And honestly, he does a better job cleaning up after them than I do. Before these two I had a fur baby that was the love of my life. When he got sick and it was time to put him down, David asked if he could come say goodbye. My little love hadn't lifted his head in 2 days, but when David came over he mustered up just enough energy to raise his chin for some pets. That is the best review anyone could give, honestly. David came highly recommended by a good friend and cat-lover. I found him to be a cat-lover himself and when he first met my 20lb ball of kitty love, they seemed to get along just fine. Now, my cat is old and persnickety and generally crabby especially around strange males but on our first trip David sent me photos and videos of him playing with Java with a long back-scratcher I had because my cat was hissing at him, oy. I felt bad for David but was very impressed that he had a good attitude about it and was making jokes and seemed to be very experienced. When we got home from the trip that was at least a week I think, Java was happier than he'd ever been before when we'd gone away! I was ecstatic. The next time we went away I was so happy I had David and happily booked him to watch our cat again. This time, I got texts but there weren't any videos, just photos, and pretty much the same photo every time - of our cat on the bed. Also, there was no humor-filled chatting - just something like "sorry each picture is the same but your cat doesn't do much else". I was surprised, but it was Christmas time and I figured he was busy. When we got home, the place was a mess. Weird lights I never use were turned on even though I left particular lights on just like I did the last time which were never changed then. My litter genie was all used up and empty of a bag or anything though I'd left a brand new bag in there when we left for about 10 days. I thought that was really strange since David said he liked to use the little garbage bags and take the waste out every day - so I left the little garbage bags for him - a full box - and they were all gone too. The litter box was full. The bathtub where my cat gets his favorite water from was dirty and bone dry, like the water hadn't been turned on for at least a couple of days (we always leave it dripping for him since he's on urinary health food that makes him thirsty). Beyond that, my Britta water pitcher was also bone dry which I thought was so odd! It just seemed like no care was taken at all. And of course, my cat was in a terrible mood, crying and crying, beside himself. I was really surprised and didn't know what to do! My friend encouraged me to tell David about it since she knew him to be very conscientious so I did and found out that he wasn't even at my house but had one of his assistants who didn't know my cat, come to sit with him. He also told me that people rave about this assistant. He was very apologetic, though, and offered me a partial refund and said he would personally take care of the cat sitting for me from now on. I thought fine, I'll give him another chance, especially if it's going to be David doing the sitting. The weird thing is, months later I asked if I could get my key back since I had a friend coming to stay and only one spare key. I gave David an update on Java that he was getting old and a little arthritic but still loved to play and was his same feisty self and looking forward to having him sit again and I got the strangest response from a man I thought I had a personable relationship with: "Based on your comments below and prior conversations, this will conclude our business relationship. I don't believe that I or my assistants are qualified to care for Java since he should be under medical supervision while you are away." When I asked for clarification on what he meant he simply repeated this and gave me quotes from his website that mentioned aggressive or infirm or destructive animals, which is not what I would say about my cat. I don't care if a cat sitter would rather not deal with my old crabby cat who sometimes pees outside the box. But I felt like David was somehow angry with me and I couldn't understand why. I swear I was not tripping when I say that the time his assistant watched my cat it was horrible and nothing like the first time when David was there. I still think David is great with cats and a really fun sitter. I am writing this because I think some people may want to check if David is using a substitute to sit for you and might want to be sure you and your pet have met that person first. read more

David is the best sitter in San Francisco, full stop. I did an extensive search before I found him and he really is the best. What you get from most pet sitters: 1) Change food and leave. No playing, no attention to your cats. 2) Inconsistent availability (this isn't their full-time job). Usually unavailable on holidays. 3) See sitting as just a job. People get sitters because they want to know that their pets are being taken care of. David goes above and beyond by 1) Sending videos of him playing with your cats. He will send us up to 7 videos (!) on days when he can. There's nothing more anxiety-reducing than seeing your cats so contented from so much attention and care. 2) David is THE CAT WHISPERER. I haven't met anyone who is as good with cats. I have a bitey cat and, I don't know how he does it, but he is able to calm this cat down. 3) He is a professional and is available on holidays. His communication is excellent. 4) He cleans up the cat's messes and can perfectly handle whatever specific feeding or medical requirements you have. 4) He truly loves cats and cares for them. He has helped me through different issues with them that haven't been in his job description at all. He truly cares about your pets. 6) On several occasions has done things completely out of his job description like take in packages and alert me of issues in my apartment. I can't believe I haven't already written a review for David. This is certainly long overdue. David is spectacular. I have been using his services for about a year now. I initially hired David in a pinch. I had called around to some other cat sitters and no one had availability or were taking in new clients. I took a chance on David since I didn't see a whole lot of reviews and I'm glad I did. My cat was very sick and I needed someone to come to our house to administer his medication, etc. when I had to be gone for a weekend. I couldn't just board my cat. I got a good vibe off David from our phone call. He seems really genuine about his love for cats and I can tell my cat would be in good hands. My cat gets very sad and is very needy so whenever I am away on vacation or have to travel home, I hire David. That is literally every holiday. David is always available and very flexible in his schedule and accommodates my needs every time even if I call him last minute. David will always do whatever you need him to when he is at your place. If you need him to pick up your mail or packages and bring them inside your home, he will. He will turn on the lights to make it look like your place is being lived in and not empty. He will water your plants. He stays and plays with your cat and will send text message updates if you ask him to. David is so affordable too. If I could give 10 stars I would. We have a a bit of a unique situation with our cats as they eat at specific times, and like to eat a specific way. David has been incredibly accommodating. Making sure he comes in within their normal eating window, giving them specific portions, and in a specific pattern. He also sends us pics and videos of the kitties while we're away. And always making sure to update us about anything else that may be going on. One time he even provided them with food on his own dime as we'd miscounted the amount of cans he'd need. David is awesome :) After deciding it was poor form to continue asking my friends to cat sit given the ridiculous parking situation in the lower haight, I frantically searched for a cat sitter at the last minute. Everyone I called on Yelp was booked, but one of them directed me to David. Although a little hesitant to leave my kitten in the hands of someone who was, as of then, unlisted with no reviews, I called David to hopefully set up a meet and greet/key exchange time. Even though he was out of town, he was more than willing to fit me in the next day when he got back to exchange keys. Rock! It's been almost two years, and I couldn't be happier. I've never had any issues whatsoever booking with David anywhere from several months to several days in advance, and he's very accessible over email, text, or phone. He's super tidy. Love that my apartment is always cleaner than when I left it. Still a 5/5 and still SO happy with David. I left suddenly due to a family emergency and then my husband had to end up flying out to meet me a few days later for an additional 7 days. I emailed David in a panic and he was so nice and said he was able to come over during the week. It was so sudden that I really didn't have time to plan and my husband only knew to leave out a check for him. David was able to come in and fulfill the needs of our kitties without me having to do any prep... it took a huge load off of my mind in an already trying time. Also, my husband had left wet clothes and our sheets/towels in the washer and we were not getting back home until late night on a Sunday and we didn't have any other sheets in the home that I would have been able to put on our head when I arrived home. We grieved hard when our petsitter moved away, and then, like a MIRACLE, David Owen stepped in and our cats fell for him as did we! David is awesome! He clearly loves cats and is the most conscientious caretaker I've ever come across. I found him here on yelp - I was going out of town for a couple weeks over christmas. My cat is nearly 20 (!) and I'd finally reached the point where I could no longer ask friends to look in on him. David responded to my email inquiry almost immediately - was super professional - and met me at my house to meet my cat and go through routine - boxes, food, etc. I can't stress enough how much he genuinely cares for your cat - he knew he would be coming once a day, but since the cat can only eat wet food now, he suggested leaving a bowl in the freezer that he could put out that would be a second meal when it thaws. Cat caught right on and it's worked fantastic. he also waters plants, moves your car if you need... My cat is not friendly to anyone but me - but he definitely seems to like David - as evidenced by the videos and pictures I receive every single day with funny comments about "my little guy"- when I was going out of the country, he even switched to facebook messenger vs SMS for the communication - and spent some time before i left practicing : ) can't rave enough. so glad I found him here. read more

At first I was very happy with the service. It was extremely convenient, and David seemed like a real cat lover. However, over time, little things happened. The rates went up with no notice. A different pet sitter came to my home, which David had not told me about in advance (or asked if I would be okay with). And more than one time I found a bag of .... um... litterbox garbage... hanging from my doorknob when I got home. The cat was always fine and seemed happy, so I guess that's all that matters. My partner found David online. I was skeptical to have a stranger come in, but the video updates from him daily, made it clear that David is a cat whisperer and loves kitties. The first video he sent was our cat on his lap purring. Whaaat, she barely does this for us and he had her purring and sitting on his lap, day one! I loved that he came over to do a meet and greet prior to our travel dates, with no obligation. I could tell the day we got home that our cat was satisfied too because there was little begging for rubs, like she usually immediately wants when we return. The litter box was well taken care of, which has been a point on contention when we travel with past sitters, ie friends. He cleaned up and vacuumed around the cat's littler boxes and when we came back two weeks later the cats were perfectly happy.
