CORPORATE RADIO SUCKS. SUPPORT INDEPENDENT RADIO - KPFA 94.1 or KALX 90.7! What about the music? The soul-less crap that they play on repeat promotes such a lack of taste in our bay area youthful generations, unabashed un-originality, and totally silences the true "alternative music" that's out there, and homogenizes an entire bay area scene as "alternative" - what does that mean, anyway? What's LESS alternative than Live 105? It's as mainstream and predictable as it comes. And what's with the "Live 105 Activists" thing? When has Live 105 EVER align itself with activism, or any cause for that matter, other than promoting horrible taste in music? How many times can you play that "Snow" song by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, or The Plain White T's "Delilah" in one day?! Commercialization: 1% of the time that I tune to this channel, they are playing music, and even less often than that, is the song they're playing anything other than shameless Industry pop-rock worthy only of channel-changing and MTVdom. The sadness of such lame corporate radio washes over me every time I browse over 105.3 - whether it's the bumbling, painfully annoying, retarded Morning Show, the endless commercials for Sleep Train and the Shane Co ("Now YOU have a FRIEND in the Diamond Business!" bullshit), and endless self-promotion for shows. Even the mildly acceptable "Local Longue" lacks the down-to-earth gritty local rock bands it should represent. "The Bay Area's Alternative Station:" Wow... really? I've been hearing this station since I was a little kid- although it does rock some of the the great 90's grunge hits, a couple hip-hop-rock fusion ballads, and endless Sublime and Foo Fighters tracks, its really just shitty pop disguised as Rock-n-Roll, glorified by the stations new tag-line "The one and only." I'm sorry - but at ANY given time during the day, I'd rather listed to KPFA / KPFB 94.1FM, or KALX 90.7 FM Berkeley for real music, independent news and legitimate radio media. Period. "Just when you thought the government was the most hypocritical and unscrupulous institution in this country, the broadcast media comes along and proves they are far more deserving of this unbecoming description. The most recent of the media travesties is that of Clear Channel Entertainment and its plan to gain complete domination over every air-wave floating around this corporate-ruled country. Clear Channel is putting a halt to the distribution of CD's recorded by bands during concerts and sold immediately afterwards, in the 130 venues it owns and every other live music venue. An article in Rolling Stone magazine said Clear Channel Entertainment has bought the patent from the technology's inventors and claims to own the exclusive right to sell instant concert CDs after shows. This not only affects the 130 venues Clear Channel owns, but also every live music venue. You can do that sort of thing when you are the biggest concert promoter in the country. In what has been a very successful endeavor to monopolize the industry, Clear Channel has gone from owning a reasonable and fair 44 radio stations six years ago to owning a ridiculous 1,239 stations today. As this number grew, broadcast localism and diversity declined, leaving nothing but homogenized music and news in its place. What is homogenized music and news? It is radio stations refusing to play local music or give exposure to certain bands for no reason besides profit. It is "local" news coverage done from across the country. It is a single source having control over every piece of information dispersed to the public. It is virtual censorship of those who do not adhere to the corporate agenda and criteria. It is one political or religious view crushing different perspectives and opinions. It is the mainstream, the status quo, the myopic majority and the impending possibility of a Clear Channel nation. Usually when the media are in need of scolding or regulation, the Federal Communications Commission is called in as the omnipotent guardian of the sanctity of mass communications. So where is the FCC during all of this? Ideally, the FCC would see this problem and do its job by withholding such unbridled power from media corporations. Even un-ideally, it would turn a blind eye to the problem and just ignore how ethics and integrity in mass communications are dying." KITS is just another corporate rock radio station, the withered, pale progeny of stations like KROQ, 91X, The Quake or even of what KITS was in the fall of 1986 when Becky ran screaming into my room, pushed past me and excitedly tuned my stereo to 105.3 FM. The only intelligible words that came out of her mouth were "Listen! It's like KROQ!" And it was. In those early months, 105.3 was just music and a bumper or two reminding you what station was playing this great stuff. Real New Wave, post punk, industrial. Then came the switch to grunge and other guitar based alt rock. I could hang with that. But over time, the largely white kid alt rock listeners were replaced by suburban gangsta wannabes who reveled in their new found wiggitude. These oppressed proletarians worshiped at the altar of Limp Biskit and all manner of audio excrement. I stopped listening. When I tune in now, I know that the songs they play run in rotation. A song that either tests well or was backed with the most payola (let's not pretend that record promoters don't pay stations for placement) gets played the most. DJs decide nothing, and a guy like Steve Masters couldn't get an interview with the station today. In the old days, before Entercom, CBS, Clear Channel and whoever else, an alternative station in San Diego didn't play exactly what an alternative station in San Francisco, Seattle, Boston or New York played. Now we get programming from a central station, decided upon by bean counters and based on focus groups filled by people who only listen to the radio for 15 minutes at a time because they forgot to take their Ritalin. Do yourself a favor. Turn off the radio because radio is dead. Turn on NPR or last.fm or YouTube or the KCRW Internet feed. One star for the memory of what Live 105 was. Two of them (fife and gory) have nothing but comtempt for most of the citizens of the bay area and Ravy acted like she was just trying to protect us from the truth that woody seemed to have cornered the market on and that the rest of us just needed to be told and then go away. I cannot believe this. Live 105.3 must be run be a bunch of chimps. Your "apologizing for bad morning radio" spot was tasteless and infuriating. That show was the only reason anyone listened to your station in the morning. If the show was cancelled for a legit reason, Then you could have saved some face by announcing that they were unfortunately fired and that you were looking for a replacement. I wish there was a way for me to contact the execs directly, because they are so out of tune with their audience that I feel that even the outraged yelping will go unnoticed because YELP is usually only visited by buisinesses who actually care what their customers think and can accept honest feedback. Sadly, I have no hope of that. But I know that all the fans of the show want to make a difference. So I am pleading that anyone who works at KITS, or even better .....doesn't work there anymore, give us an email address, a name, a phone number of someone who was involved in making this decision so we can give them a piece of their mind,just like "hotel lumiere" or enterprise rent a car" had to answer to hundreds of WTR fans when they did something reprehensible. Live 105 has gone to shit after being rebranded to Alt 105. I'll admit that I tired to continue to listen because every now and then they'll play the good alternative music but I can no longer do that. I'm tired of they way you play random stuff and I stand with my fellow KKL fans and will no longer be listening to this station unless KKL comes back to it. All of them! Kevin, Ally, Deadeyes, Useless Weirdo, and Twinkie. Below is my story of KKL: I started listening to Live 105 just right before KKL started in the mornings. In college I would go through phases of the type of music I would listen to and I had finally stuck with alternative. I was so happy when I found Live 105 because all they would play was the type of music that I liked. One morning while I was getting ready for work, I heard the KKL live show. I didn't know how I felt about this because I had finally found a station that didn't have stupid morning people talking about stupid stuff. I stuck with Live 105 and grew to LOVE KKL. They were definitely different and it was so refreshing to not have to listen about stupid celebrity stuff. As time went on they incorporated fun games and relative reports of things that I wanted to know about. (See Mia V's review. She goes into more details of games and stuff). They're awesome at concerts and bad to look at. They are truly missed. That all changed when Live 105 was re-branded. I don't have anything left to say about Alt 105. I hope KKL comes back soon. I won't be listening to 105.3 after Entercom purchased the station, rebranded Live 105, and canceled Kevin Klein Live without making any attempt to engage the station's listeners. I've been a bay area resident for 27 years and listened to Live 105 since Green Day was a new band. It's beyond logic they'd keep the same alternative music and drop the only personalities that made the station stand out. Kevin Klein Live was the most relevant and engaging show on 105.3 since they had Howard Stern and Love Line with Dr. Drew. The community of listeners KKL built made the program unlike anything else in local radio and the best thing on the station in the last 15 years. I genuinely hope the sponsors of the station reconsider whether their advertising money is being wisely spent with Entercom. Nearly 75% of Live 105's social media followers were fans of KKL. Maybe Entercom doesn't realize we can listen to bad alternative music with ads on Pandora for free, without the static. I'd encourage KKL fans to boycott Entercom's other bay area and national stations since it's obvious they are purely profit driven and don't care about their listeners or sponsors (full list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_radio_stations_owned_by_Entercom_Communications). Most KKL listeners won't have an issue shunning Sarah and Vinnie anyway. I wish I could give them one star but i can't. I despise this radio station now that they have fired The Woody Show. For the last three years The Woody Show has brought joy and laughter to a many car, truck, cubical, store, and maybe even a few corner offices. To have Woody Tony and Ravey ripped from the Faithful listeners is and injustice. I always knew when I would tune in I would get all the news and sports from around the bay and even something like guess the state too. I realy enjoyed the talk in the moring format with limited music, I have an Ipod for when I want to listen to music. I never much cared for the music Live 105 played since I discovered XM satellite radio in 2003, I almost never would flip on the regular radio until i found the woody show. With the Woody Show gone the faithful are reduced to listing to lame ass and Tonelli or whatever other crap is on in the morning. All I can say is I am lucky that I have XM still. Wherever they go I will be sure to follow them and never tune to Live 105 ever again. I have never heard of a moring show in the bay area to have such a hardcore following until the woody show. I would think Live 105 would do whatever it took to keep something like that around. On a side note from my rant about the woody show, live 105 plays the same songs over and over and they are not even that good of songs to start with. Never thought I'd actually write a Yelp review but this is important to me- I'm in shock that 105.3 got rid of the only reason I actually started listening to the radio. I had always been under the impression that radio shows were obnoxious people talking way too loud and fake-laughing at scripted jokes (and, to be fair, most are). The first time I switched onto KKL, I knew it was a good show because when I got to work, I wanted to stay in the car and listen to the rest of it. I even downloaded a radio app to keep listening once I got to my desk and later, would listen to the podcasts. The DJs are quick witted, irreverent, and innovative - things I didn't realize radio personalities could be. Their interviews (though brief, I would sometimes miss them if I didn't get into work early enough) were usually the highlight. They talked to Demetri Martin in promotion for his new stand up tour and I was reminded of how great he is. I used to be obsessed with his comedy in high school and hearing him again made me look into seeing his show. Absolutely no regrets, and incredibly thankful that I was exposed to him again through this radio show. I thought they were just taking a well-deserved holiday break, but I knew something was wrong when I heard one of the Chainsmokers' various 3-note songs playing. Yikes. The only reason why I wouldn't listen to music on Spotify or iTunes. Really, after how long they have been on and the engagement they were able to grab from listeners you really had to axe the show? Yea they talked a lot and that's what a morning show is. Did the execs get mad that they were also talking ish about you guys? I've listened to LIVE 105 for over 15 years and I've had the station on preset #1 since owning my first car, but now I have removed "ALT 105" from my presets and I will never listen to the station again. Kevin Klein Live was the best thing to happen to the station since Loveline and anyone, or in this case, any "management team" moronic enough to cancel the most listened to part of their programming doesn't warrant an audience at all. It makes NO SENSE why anyone would remove something that brings a little more joy to the monotonous grind of most of people's work week, especially for no good reason. KKL was something different for those of us who don't care what idiotic thing the Kardashians did or what repetitive, irrelevant nonsense happened on Survivor. If i wanted that, I can just turn on any other station in the morning. KKL broke the mold and gave us something worth listening to. Now what is there? Live 105 has monumentally disappointed me by 'covertly' pulling The Woody Show. As someone who enjoys most of the genre the music they play they have serious issues outside the Woody Show. They play songs repeatedly over and over again without variety, good songs turned bad by mind numbing repetitiveness. I am pleased that they have revived their Subsonic show with Aron Axelson though. The Woody Show itself was the primary reason i ever listened to Live 105(hereby dubbed FAIL 105). The official reason they were pulled was for playing 30 seconds of an unreleased song that weeks previous another evening DJ(Tanner i believe) played the Green Day song IN ITS ENTIRETY. Live 105, CBS, and DaveTheShowKiller have made a huge mistake. (All three of them need a swift kick in the ass.) Firing WTR is not only going to cost them good ratings, but thousands of fans that are loyal to only WTR. WTR is what brought Live 105 back from the grave and this is how they repay them...firing them over a stupid song that you can't even really hear or distinguish what band is singiing from the 30 second clip. I've been a listener of this radio station for 20+ years and Kevin Klein live was the best show they had ever found. This radio station over the years had many great and entertaining djs that were destroyed by being forced to play the same over played modern rock tracks over and over again. At times this station plays great music and had entertaining djs. I thought the acquisition of the station would allow this morning show to expand and possibly improve the signal from this station that has been terrible for over 10 years and left unfixed. However I had noticed the horrific change in music on the station over the holidays as they began playing more pop and top 40 music and less of the music that had just sold out a 2 day concert at Oracle. I really hope this company comes to their senses, but I doubt it. Maybe they will realize when they lose even more ratings and go back to playing Spanish music to get some ratings. I wish Kevin, Ally, Dead Eyes, Twinkie, and yes even you, Patrick all the best. I listened to this show every morning and would relisten to the podcast for what I missed. In firing the Woody Show, the management at KITS has killed the only reason to listen to their sorry, second-rate station. With all the other options for being entertained at the butt-crack of dawn, it is shocking to see big radio make such an assinine decision. But then again, what can you expect from "one of radio's most notorious and egotistical programmers, Michael Martin," according to the SF Examiner's Brad Kava. "Martin, San Franciscans know, is the guy who is such a big fan of Prince, that when he went to a meet and greet with the artist, he began crying. Prince saw him and thought he was such a freak, he had him thrown out of the gathering. Woody recounted that story on the air not naming Martin, before Martin became his program director at CBS-owned Live 105. I don't doubt that's the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey would say. I have listened to Live 105 since KOME left a loooooooonnnng time ago. I loved Not So Silent Nights, BFDs and Loveline. I used to love Howard and while I have listened to them from Day 1, I admit it took some time to warm up to WTR, but soon enough I LOVED them! They have become such a huge part of Live 105. I can't imagine these events without them. I couldn't imagine my commute without them! When they almost left a while back I was pretty upset, but at least we had some kind of warning. Now they're gone for good. A quick song clip? Seriously? The ONLY good show in the mornings fired for the something so small. Now Live 105 is going for "Music in the mornings"...umm isn't that exactly what Channel 104.9 calls their mornings? I'm so confused with Live 105! What happened? Almost a year later and I still don't listed to Fail 105. Was driving somewhere with the wife the other day and she was flipping through her presets, one of which was still 105.3 (it no longer is). The No Name show was on and all it took was two seconds for me to reaffirm my decision to never listen to that station ever again. It would be more apt if it were called the No Talent, Annoying as F Voice show. Seriously, he go back to KOFY. At least there he's on par with the rest of the on-air talent, assuming the housebreaking has taken. Also, a friend of mine tells me Menace has his own show now, one night late or something.
