I've made a few trips to Penny, some just for coffee (takeaway and sit down) and a few with food…read more Across the board, Penny is outstanding in terms of Brisbane's cafe scene. The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.

Service on Sunday morning was efficient and the met with a smile. Choice of menu was reasonable- although would like more GF. Best thing was the price - much more reasonable than other places. Really worth a visit. Pretty happy with this place.

The Jam Pantry, in Greenslopes, is their newest venture and could be considered a more polished and grown up Comfort. The country-cottage chic design is still there but it's more refined (hello beautiful wallpapered back room for group dining!) as is the menu. There's old favourites including Nims' Eggs but then there's the specials board. And this is where Nims' shines. French toast with raspberry ripples, Tomato and Strawberry soup, Cous Cous cereal with coconut yoghurt, confit salmon, and a few other treats sure to leave you considering a two or three course breakfast or brunch, or at the very least plotting your immediate return. We dined here early on a Thursday morning in their first week of trade. Service was top-notch, attentive and being asked just what I meant by "iced long black" was a welcome question to ensure my coffee was a rousing success. To be fair, there were only a handful of diners while we were there but I'm confident even during the busy weekend periods, brunch hunters wouldn't be waiting too long for meals. My Zucchini and Cumin fritters with bacon, beetroot relish (able to be purchased in-house alongside Nims' other preserves, jams and relishes), garlic yoghurt and poached eggs were much larger than I'd expected and finishing them became quite the mission whilst chatting away to my dining companion. Served in a bowl, it was liking digging for hidden treasure as I made my way down to the fritters - soft, pillowy and light. There was a moment of ordering regret upon seeing my friend's french toast! The best thing it's the type of cafe you can take a paramour, your girlfriends, or your Mum. It's just like going home!

There are so many knick-knacks in this place you can buy to add to someone's collection like tea sets or lead lamps, or glassware. You walk through from where everything seems dark and gorgeous and wooden into a section that is pink and white with doilies and runners and blankets that inevitably reminded me of my grandmother. I bought a really funky foldable clock and a jewellery box masquerading as a book. So gorgeous and so cheap! Never have I come across a place that sells such beautiful and original wares for such amazing prices. It just goes to show you that it's true the further out of the city you go for shopping, the better the prices will be and generally, the nicer the staff. The lovely ladies here were all too happy to wrap my purchases and listen to me drawl on and on about how much I loved the shop. It's based in a small, suburban shopping centre in the Coorparoo/Camp Hill area.Inside there's a deli counter and little mini grocery store (stocking high end oils, vinegars etc etc). And a huge trestle table where you can sit and sip coffee or brunch. If you're after more space, just outside you can sit in the cafe's "extension", which is quite spacious, airy and has huge French windows that open out. Unfortunately onto a carpark. I came here to order some gourmet salads for Christmas Day. And although they sounded amazing, creative and probably would have tasted divine - at $23.50/kilo, I had to fan myself with the menu and have a sit down. Before leaving without ordering. I have it on good authority that this is THE place that locals come for brunch on a weekend (but book a table). And the sarnies are apparently to-die-for. As is the expense, I'm sure.

Their coffee is Merlo and is good without being anything to write home about. All things considered, a Sunday morning coffee and BLAT in their very open and breezy outside seating area is a great way to start winding down the weekend.
