Ramen class, woohoo! I have been looking for classes in NY for so long, but haven't had any luck…read more The more professional, formal classes aren't as frequent and they can be a bit intimidating. It never occurred to me to search Yelp but when I found Mamie's class, I was super excited. She offers a lot of services: private chef services, catering, and private cooking lessons for groups or individuals/pairs. Private cooking can be done at her studio or at your house. $400 for a private class, up to two people. Website was easily navigated. For contacting her about our private lesson, her responses were fast. Usually within the same day, or before 24 hours has fully passed. It's a quick process of coordinating schedules, and then you have to put down a 50% deposit via Paypal or Chase quick pay. After that, you're all set! A couple days beforehand, she reaches out again, which is really thoughtful -- sometimes people forget and need a little reminder, but I think it's just nice that she goes that extra step. Love where her studio/home is! Quiet, peaceful area, with a lot of eateries/food places nearby. About a 10-15 minute walk from the train, depending how fast you're hauling. Large building, with doorman/concierge services, and a huge (and I mean HUGE) lobby/waiting area with three cozy leather couches. We arrived early, but I didn't know if she was teaching people before us, so me and my friend just chilled there, talking quietly. It was very relaxing! When we went to her place, we were greeted by Mamie, took off our shoes, and put our stuff down on her couch. The view is amazing, you see the water/bridge, and on a rainy/cloudy day, it looked really peaceful. A nice way to start the class. She gave us her version of an apron, which looked like a cute top you can wear out, haha. What I liked about this class was that it felt informal, like we were learning from a friend or relative (it helped that it was a home kitchen rather than a commercial kitchen). She was patient and we even made conversation as we worked. The entire process of making the dough and then kneading it, to using the Kitchen Aid to make noodles was super fun! But we made a lot of noodles, so we spent a lot of time running them through the machine. I zoned out a bit and got a little tired/antsy. Then she showed us how to boil the eggs. A lot of things were pre-made already, like the pork belly, the broth, and marinated eggs from the day before. It makes sense, because it would be impossible to fit everything within a 3 hour class and get the same quality taste and flavors. And what would everyone do during the downtime?! She did walk us through how to cut the bone out of the pork belly, wrap it up, and how to cook it. Same with the broth, she explained how to do it properly, in terms of pre-cooking the bones and then giving them a good clean, etc. Between her quick instructions and the take home recipe packet, and asking questions, I think we had a good understanding of what to do. In my head, I thought it would be more hands-on or spending more time in the kitchen doing the actual work, but I now understand that wasn't too realistic. The final step was assembling our bowl! That, after actually eating it, was the best part of the class -- my friend had a blast torching the pork belly slices so they were charred and crispy along the edges, but it still melted like butter in your mouth. I thoroughly enjoyed the ramen, because it wasn't as salty as how the restaurants usually make it. I was able to truly taste the unique flavors coming together. She also gave us some noodles and marinated eggs to take home with us. How sweet! She mentioned adding a dumpling class, so who knows, I may take that one as well. So happy I found this class! Those who like cooking will be thrilled with a night at Susi's home, but others who are happier socializing and eating (like myself) will be just as satisfied. As soon as we arrived Susi handed each of us a personalized apron (probably the only thing that I'll ever see Chef Andrea on), told us to tie our hair back (I appreciate a hairless kitchen) and directed us towards delish apps and wine. But the night got even better... We were split into groups and I was placed into the capable hands of Chef Charmaine. My group was in charge of the upside down strawberry cake. Yum- I hope there'd be batter testing involved!! Charmaine gave each of us a job (mine was to crack eggs). We chatted and drank wine while we baked so it was actually fun. I may have given her a slight heart attack when I dumped the vinegar into the batter way earlier than necessary, but for the most part Charmaine made sure the others would be able to enjoy our cake. By the time I was over cracking eggs, stirring batter (and yes, even taste testing) it was time to sit down for a 5 star meal of gazpacho, flatbread, salmon, quinoa and the cake. I wasn't a huge fan of the salmon, but it was probably just me because it quickly disappeared from everyone else's plates. Everything else was absolutely incredible. I love that Susi hosts these dinner parties right out of her cozy home and if I had a kitchen that gorgeous I may even consider cooking. Maybe.

While one group was cooking in the kitchen along side professional chefs the other group was being entertained in the dining area with some kitchen/cooking trivia which was loads of fun. The dining area is relatively small so I'm not certain what the capacity limit is for an event hosted by this company but my guess would be a cooking event by this company is probably limited to a group of about 50 at a time. Larger companies probably would have to break into two separate time slots (but of course only they can answer that question). The kitchen was very clean and we used quality pots, bowls and culinary products and it was apparent when you held the stuff. It truly was an amazing experience and the staff was patient and absolutely great. Heck we were even a tough crowd getting carried away during the entertainment portion. The staff probably wanted to hit us over the head with a couple frying pans but they were great sports! My only complaint from the event was that my company was cheap and didn't order beef, they opted instead for veggie options (Yuk!) but the food quality was great.

She and her husband warmly welcomed us into their home and led us to a beautifully decorated table of what was described as a "welcome snack," but was actually a delicious feast in itself. There was Uzbek dried fruits, nuts, both sweet and savory pastries, and hot green tea. I loved the Uzbek raisins, which are bigger and juicier and just better than any raisins I've ever had! As we ate, Damira shared photos and stories of her family's life in Samarkand, an ancient city in Uzbekistan that lies on the silk road. Once we were all well-acquainted and nourished, we headed to the kitchen to cook the main feast. On the menu were homemade individual breads, spinach stuffed pastries, a spring cabbage salad, a cucumber potato salad, and a lamb stew. Damira was such a great teacher, demonstrating techniques before having us actively participate in the prep, cooking, and serving of each dish. She timed everything perfectly so that we had breaks and ate basically the entire afternoon, while continuing to engage us in stories of her home and culture. When we sat down for the final meal, the delicious food was somehow made even better from the meaningful connection we all shared while cooking it. The four and a half hour class flew by and while I didn't want to leave, I was very happy when we were each sent home with enough leftovers to last another two meals.

We arrived a bit early and they allowed us to sit at their bar while we waited for the rest of the guests (which by the way, they have a fantastic wine selection). We had a full class of 20, and it was wonderful because everyone was there for a good time. We were led by Jen who was a fantastic host and got all of us rolling (bad dad joke) in no time. Considering the size of our class, and the fact that none of us had experience, I thought the flow of the class was welcoming and very easy to follow. There are two other chefs there that help to guide you along the way, with their own witty personalities that brought smiles to all of our faces. With this class, you're really making pasta from scratch. We started with just flower and eggs, and they walked us through turning it into the proper dough. While we let the pasta rest, we split up to do other prep work. Some of us made a pesto sauce, while others made the ragu. We ended up making bruschetta which was DELICIOUS. Once we all finished that, we got back to the pasta and began making the actual noodles. This all is part of why I loved the experience. Initially, we thought we were only making our own servings, but we found out that everyone was cooking for each other. It was a wonderful feeling seeing that we all literally made our dinner from scratch. I liked the fact that we had made two types of sauces for the pasta, so that there was variety for everyone. The pasta itself was PHENOMENAL. This was the first time I ever tried home made pasta and it changed my perspective on good Italian food. It was so light and flavorful. The pesto and ragu sauces were also spectacular. I didn't have a favorite as they were equally good. The amount we made was also VERY generous, and we had a lot of leftover pasta, which they encouraged us to take home. After dinner we ended up sharing some brownies and ice cream to celebrate three birthdays that evening. We sang happily and indulged in the desert which was wonderful. One thing to mention is that they do photos and videos of the entire event, and I love that because it allows you to focus and really savor the moment, as opposed to trying to get the perfect shot for your social media. They send an email afterwards with quality footage which should grant you plenty of options for your social media needs. The photos and videos in this review were taken by them, and there was even more to choose from. Overall, Bite Unite NYC was one of the best experiences I've ever had anywhere. I couldn't shut up about it afterwards, and I even ended up buying my own pasta maker. Not to sound weird or anything, but it literally changed my life. And honestly that's thanks to the incredible staff, location, quality of the ingredients, and the set up overall.
