I've been a vegan for a little over 3 years. My first visit to Kitchen 17 was excellent. The pizza was one of the best I have ever had. Unfortunately my experience with this second visit was that the quality and consistency in their pizzas is lacking. The pizza was not good.
This review pertains to my visit to the restaurant with my non-vegan friend on the evening of 11/20/2015 at around 9 pm. I like to take my non-vegan friends to vegan places I know are good, so they can have a great experience trying out vegan food. I was disappointed.
So, we arrived around 9 pm and promptly put our order in (the 16 inch pizza supreme and potato skins). We got some potato skin things, which were very average; they were loaded with salsa, a little cheese, and maybe some other stuff; they just didn't have much flavor. They were 6 dollars for 3 small potato halves, which did not seem like much. If I were to guess roughly half the area of the small plate was empty. In comparison, if you spend two dollars more on an appetizer at Chicago Diner ($8) on something like Poutine they fill an entire large plate and mound the appetizer on. I wasn't too bothered by this though because the real reason I came was for the pizza.
Anyway they burnt our first pizza and offered to let us eat some of the burnt slices while we waited. We didn't eat the burnt slices because we didn't have a problem waiting. When our unburnt pizza came out around 9:45 pm there was almost no cheese on the pizza (the pizza was covered in cheese the first time I had tried Kitchen 17). There were just a few sprinkles of cheese shreds this time. The first time the pizza had a little oily-ness to it, which I thought was great. This time there was none of that oily-ness. In reading the menu there is supposed to be a blend of herbs and spices on the pizza. The pizza this time visibly and in tasting did not have any herbs or spices (it was bland). And where were the Kalamata Olives that were supposed to be on the pizza!?!? I think I saw 2 little black olive shreds on the pizza, but the first time we went the pizza had huge whole olives on it. Also, where were the sausage crumbles that the pizza was supposed to have?!?!?!? The pizza had the large pepperoni seitan sliced, which did not taste like they were cooked very well. It had some onions on it too that tasted uncooked as well. My pizza the first time had a ton of peppers on it too - there were no peppers on this pizza.
In summary, the pizza, overall, just seemed like it was lacking ingredients, tasted bland, was under cheesed, and wasn't cooked as well as it should have been. If you look at the pizzas in the reviews that other people posted up, my pizza looked nothing like those pizzas. The pictures of pizzas people are posting up are loaded in cheese and ingredients. My pizza barely had any cheese.
Sadly I will probably not be returning here. I don't have a desire to pay 18 bucks for a 16 inch pizza and get inconsistent quality.
Although they are not 100% vegan restaurants, I feel you can get a consistently good vegan pizza at Dimo's pizza or Blaze pizza (Blaze will do a custom personal vegan pizza). read more
