The Hickory Tree - Apothecary

The Hickory Tree

This came up on Yelp during my search for antique stores in Hickory. This is NOT an antique store…read morebut it's a pretty cool furniture store with what seemed to be reasonable prices.

A very nice consignment store, well laid out, up and downstairs. Lots of stuff, although all we…read morewanted to see were chairs. Help was available and they were very helpful. We saw one chair we liked. It would fit our needs, was the acceptable color, material and size...a la my wife's seeking standards. Did we buy it? Of course not. Hickory is loaded with furniture outlets, so off we went a exploring. A couple of more locations and them the big kaboom: the Hickory Furniture Mart. Another review coming on this enormous, four level block-filling edifice containing just about any manufacturer and style of furniture one could imagine. We did not find anything that was better than the one at The Hickory Tree, so after some coffee and lunch at the Olde Hickory Station (see that review), we returned to the Hickory Tree. Since this was a consignment store, all items had a sales price tag with the prices listed over time. What I mean is that a price of $175 was scheduled to cost $150 on the first of the next month, then it would cost $135 the next month, and so on. This being the middle of the month, and not wanting to risk the desire chair being sold while we waited, we bought it...right then. They accepted credit cards. With the help of a young man we loaded this chair into our SUV and were off for home. An excellent, but exhausting furniture shopping experience that I survived. Before you blow your mind out looking for furniture all over, start here at the Hickory Tree. Prices reasonable and mark-downs abound. And nice people.

I have had an extremely impossible experience trying to seek assistance and support for an issue…read moreinvolving a new sofa I purchased from a Mitchell Gold store. It's a long story but I experienced this problem almost three weeks ago. I have spoken to numerous people and the phone representatives have been polite but they have kicked the can down the alley for almost three weeks. And I get this odd sense from them that they don't have a lot of confidence in "the system." That's just my intuition. They have promised that the issue has been escalated to a higher level, but the senior management has yet to be proactive in this regard. In my last call to their 800 number last Thursday, the customer relations manager told me the same story, but I have yet to get a call from the senior manager, over three business days later. I have purchased lamps, a sofa, and other living room furniture from them in the past, but I am not at all impressed with their recent response, a non-response. Upon my return from London tonight, I will start calling them again. Very frustrating!

SCORE! Just an…read moreupdate that we went back on the last weekend in July after our heartbreaking first visit. Needless to say, we learned from our mistakes this time. We snagged a nice 89" Cara sofa and a closeout on some old Baxter chair at almost 70% off the retail price. This time we took advantage of an additional 20% off promotional sale we learned about through their email signup[1]. BUYING/SHOPPING EXPERIENCE: Just as good as the first time with the sales staff. They were very accommodating, polite and hands off which we really appreciated. It's up to you (the customer) to flag them down and ask questions. So don't expect to be waited on hand and foot. This time around we didn't waste any effort. With the promo sale in force, we moved in for our kill with knife-like precision. A quick survey of what was new and old and then....little Jesus rays descended on our prey - the neutral colored 89" Cara sofa. A second glance of the inventory led us to the wool Baxter chair we had seen the last time we were here. PURCHASE & DELIVERY: We didn't need to use the consolidated delivery services in the main mall since we only purchased items from MGO. That being said, we paid for everything up front except for the final delivery charge. Delivery charges are due at the time of delivery but they call you a couple of days ahead with a time/date and final charges - cash is best. Ask for an estimate of delivery charges from the sales person (which we did) to get an idea beforehand. FWIW, it's based on weight and they were pretty much spot on within $5 of the final charges. Delivery itself (not related to MGO) is handled through a third party, but we found them courteous and professional arranging the furniture where we wanted it when it was delivered. QUALITY OF MERCHANDISE: Again, at close to 70% off the retail price, I can't emphasize how good of a deal this is - more so b/c the furniture is EXACTLY the style we wanted and at a much higher quality than the entry level fabrics used in Pottery Barn, Macy's and elsewhere from what we've seen.[2] Again, this isn't 8way hand tied coils, but decent heavy gauge sinuous wire - pretty standard stuff for contemporary/modern furniture. OTHER STUFF: They do have free wifi - although it was a bit sketchy for us esp. on checkins. Even if you don't get anything on your next trip, be sure to sign up for the email list - in our case, it paid off and we scored some nice pieces with the additional 20% off for that weekend. Since then, we've seen other emails alerting us to 2 additional sales - one on Labor Day and the 2nd on Columbus Day. Overall it just goes to show that patience is a virtue when you're bargain hunting! MGO delivers on quality of merchandise, price and service. Of course, all sales are final and as-is. So the caveat is that you have to be willing to possibly overlook some blemishes and/or accept the fact that these pieces aren't going to be in mint condition. That being said tho...for what we got and the condition it arrived in, we were (are still) very pleased and wouldn't hesitate to come back when we decide to furnish our other rooms. 5 stars. [1] Thanks, Brenda! [2] After making our purchase, we stumbled into Pottery Barn and sat in the display sofas noting how thin the entry level fabric was compared to our sofa and chair. At one point we were close to purchasing a sofa at Pottery Barn...I'm glad we didn't.
