SUSHI: I've been here on 3 different occasions and I can say I've enjoyed each experience with the food. I'm very picky and only sushi al la cart typically, I've tried the Aji, Kanpachi, Suzuki, white king salmon, sake, Uni, Ama-ebi, Shime saba, Tai, Toro, Maguro, and Hotate. I REALLY like how the kampachi was cut thicker. It honestly makes a night and day difference between tasting the sophisticated depth of flavor of the amber jack as opposed to just having a textural appeal. The uni tasted like Uni b quality, pretty bitter, not worth ordering, I didn't eat it. Also the maguro had WAY too much wasabi. It made me cry and was unpleasant. The 1 order of sake that I had was a cut from the tail end of the fish, I honestly expect to get a belly cut or at least some rich tasting part of that deserves to be used for nigiri. I do understand they need to rotate the entire fish, but why not serve that part for rolls? When taking each visit into consideration, the small details that bothered me are fairly trivial, overall the sushi was very solid and consistent. 4/5 ROBATA: I ordered the stuffed bell pepper, stuffed mushroom, ume chicken, kashiwa all as appetizers. Came out in a timely manner and was delicious. I'm a big fan of the robata here and it's what really stood out, it'll keep me coming back. 5/5 SERVICE: No reservations here, which is a little annoying at times. It depends who you come with. The second time I came with a group friends all my age and the host kept seating groups before us. We were sitting in the the bar area annoyed watching groups come in after us being sat. A 50 minute wait on a wednesday night that wasn't that busy. Seems like they seat whoever they feel most important first. We were slightly vocal every time we saw people sat ahead of our group of 3, and finally the host comes up to us with a very aggravated look on his face and smacks himself over the head with his clipboard. I thought I was going to get chewed out by the guy for complaining. He then contained himself and chatted up with my buddies, then finally sat us at the bar. It was very weird. I guess he realized we weren't stupid. The most annoying aspect of the service that honestly pissed me off was the server who got defensive when I asked about bluefin sourcing and questioned her answer. I asked her what country of origin the toro was from, since it WAS NOT tuna season at the time. She instantaneously answered Japan. Ok, I understand tsukiji fish market is a hub in japan, But I do not believe the fish was caught there, I was expecting spain, mexico, just any popular atlantic region . I have friends that work for IMP and I understand the process and know what the invoice sourcing looks like when you receive a fish delivery. Sourcing and sustainability are very important aspects to me, and It's very hard to get good toro when tuna is not in season( Tuna are swimming very fast migrating and are usually leaner). I even asked the bus boy who didn't speak english to just ask the chef for me, and of coarse he went to the server and this angered her more, and she kept coming back telling me Japan.LOL. This leads me to believe they use a bluefin substitute of some sort for their toro. If you can give me proper sourcing next time, instead of acting like you know it all and dismissing your customer who actually does know what he's talking about, i'll be very satisfied. I strongly believe everyone deserves to know what they are paying for. 2.5/5 Overall, 4/5 very decent place to eat, i'll come back, but not because of the FOH, sit me next to the chef please. read more

We shared a whole squid from the robata grill. Some delicious, appetite-whetting mushroom soup. Sake and a plate full of sashimi samplers: albacore, maguro, sock-eye salmon, clams. The toro tuna is memorable. Uni. Looks like little orange cow tongues on rice. Bleeds when bitten into, melts all over tongue. Texture and taste definitely interesting. Toro hand rolls for dessert. And green tea ice cream with red bean paste. The cost for 4 people for an indulgent night at Kirala was $200. before tip. Incredibly reasonable for everything we had. read more

OH MY GOD THE FOOD WAS BLAND AND POORLY PRE-PAIRED. AVOID this BLASPHEMOUS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. UNLESS OF COURSE YOU LIKE GROCERY STORE SUSHI AT RESTAURANT PRICES. My date and I were attracted to this location, due to amazing pictures and great reviews. Most reviews promised amazing food, pictures where beautiful and the menu was quite large and full of selection. When we arrived we walked in the front door, and greeted by a nice old Japanese man. YES, we thought thinking this was a good sign. Unfortunately the night only went down hill from there. The waiting area is at the back of the restaurant by the bathrooms, squeezed between a table placed at the back by the bathrooms and the sake bar. Man was this place busy, a few people had seating at the bar and some bar tables while waiting, however, most people waited over 30min standing. we got lucky with the last two seats at the bar. OK, we knew the place was busy but this was a little much. An hour after we arrived we where seated, not kidding we arrived about 7:15 and were seated about 8:20 the table was by the door and had a draft requiring us to keep our wind breakers on. As part of dinner we received one bowl of miso soup and one salid. OK, this is cool... but wait we have two people, seriously what good will one bowl do two people. Its lucky my date had no interest in the miso soup that was heated to a boil killing the miso. We ordered; tea, edamame, the grilled squid, a big Sashimi platter, and the spicy scallop roll. Our server quickly returned with a boiling hot dead miso soup, salid, our edamame, and the hot tea. Aside from the boiling dead miso soup, a common practice at large sushi restaurants, our meal was off to a 4 star start. Soon as we finished our squid arrived, amazing looking off the grill, accompanied by our spicy scallop roll, and a large combo of some of the biggest sliced sushi I've had in a long time. Now if you're reading this you might go wait you only gave one star, and didn't you order the sashimi? YES we did order the sashimi, our server incorrectly brought us the wrong order. Our incorrect plate was removed from the table and corrected after I flagged down three servers, and finally got the attention of our server. To detail the squid thats what gives this review a star, it tasted quite good lightly grilled and included an amazing sause on one side, and for the americans a bowl of mayonnaise topped with some roe. The scallop roll was not much to mention, while most places would do something fun and creative with the scallops showing them off with the "spicy sause" these where tucked away and had almost no taste. It almost tasted like the bought it at whole foods. Finally our sashimi came! But wait, what happened to the massive slices of fish?!? all that sat on our plate was 15 thin slices of fish that was bland and tasted as though the flavor had been frozen out of it. Included where the standard, salmon, tuna, albacore, and yellow tail, with a treat of bonito, which is similar to a seared ahi tuna only a type of mackerel and a few shades lighter. The salmon had the usual salmon flavor I love but it was quite bland, the tuna was almost tasteless, and so was the yellow tail. the bonito was quite interesting and very different however the seared outside removed a large amount of the flavor. the albacore was cut in the smallest of the whole plate and was utterly tasteless. unwilling to believe this was the norm I decided on a second round of sushi hoping I might get a pice of the dinner that was promised to me by mouth watering photos and a plate ripped from my hands. I ordered taco (octopus) a favorite of mine, and salmon another favorite. I received again thinly sliced sushi that tasted of refreezing and rice. I must point out here that had I been by myself and not with a date I would have sent the whole meal aside from the squid back, or refused to pay for it. I understand they are busy, and some people have an off day, however, our server had no interest in how our dining experience and our chef had no business cutting sushi. My ex-wife a sushi server for four years taught me to always tip well again had I not been with a date I would NOT HAVE TIPED, and for that matter I would likely have declined to pay. Now I know what you're thinking this guy is some sushi snob who is picky, or well maybe a $60 meal was a lot of money and rare for him and he had high expectations. To correct this belief I regularly eat sushi (two or three times a month) and have had both bad and good sushi. However, usually there is something on the plate that is fresh and cut properly, even if its only one item its worth it. As for affordability, thats none of your business, however I had planned on spending over a bill that night and couldn't get myself to order any more of Kirala's abomination they call sushi. For dessert my date was enticed by the Japanese pumpkin and the Japanese sweet potato pie. the server had no idea what made the pie Japanese. read more

Kirala, unfortunately is going the way of Tachibana (that closed after many years on College Ave. in Oakland). Popularity, it seems, brings deterioration in service and food quality. The only thing still good, but not great, about Kirala is the food. On a cold Sunday night we waited 45 minutes for a table or counter space. Unfortunately the table we ended up with was the the one right opposite the door. Cold drafts of air constantly blew down my back since the door was open more than closed as the hoards continued to arrive (and leave). it simply is not possible to enjoy a meal when your freezing the whole time. They should discontinue this table or place a solid board behind the seats to deflect the ALWAYS cold evening air of Berkeley. The service is perfunctory and harried. The grilled sqiud is the best thing on the menu as the oysters used to be. I say 'used to be' since the last three times we visited this place they were sold out although they continue (like a bad joke) to feature the oysters on their menu. The sushi dishes are mediocre at best. Sorry, but after three years and at least three dozen visits, this will be the last time I visit this place. read more

to keep it short: skip the robata, head straight to the sushi. ---------------- there was a 30min wait on a Tuesday night. took a walk to Berkeley Bowl/Walgreens to pass the time. came back to enjoy an Asahi on tap from the bar, with complimentary asian pub crackers. edamame came complimentary with the purchase of a Sake/Cocktail -- or in our case by just asking. :) we were then seated at the bar, which was actually quite a treat since its always fun watching the sushi chefs prepare your food. after peering over the endless possibilities, we orders a bit of everything to really test Kirala's fame ankimo (monk fish liver) - 3 stars the deluxe sashimi plate - 4 stars hotate (scallop) nigiri - 5 stars unagi (fresh water eel) nigiri - 3.5 stars scallop robata - 1 skewer with 3 scallops - 2.5 stars corn robata - comes with 2 servings of corn - 2 stars duck robata - 1 star oyster robata - comes with 3 oysters on the half shell - 3 stars service was top-notch; 5-stars they gave us an extra order of the grilled oysters because the first order of oysters were 'small'... they weren't really even that small but they were very nice/generous. and for the important stuff, the food? all the robata was plain jane.. i don't see the appeal whats-so-ever. the sushi was top-notch. with our sashimi plate there was a decent salad, very good miso, complimentary sushi rice, and 15+ pieces of sashimi. APPROVE! the fish was very fresh and i will be back to fully enjoy it nigiri style. the hotate was melt in your mouth good. and the unagi was delicious. my only complaint is that its quite pricey; $25.50 for the sashimi plate.. $14.50 for toro nigiri!? toro is my favorite, but idk if i can afford $14.50 toro =( this place is definitely for only those splurge worthy occassions as I continue to live on my college-student budget... Wow! A Japanese restaurant owned by real Japanese! Not Koreans acting like Japanese sushi chefs with their headbands riddled with Japanese characters?! This is something I don't experience often, so I was pretty ecstatic to learn that Kirala was Japanese owned. Let's get down and dirty. I ordered the small order of California rolls and the Chicken Teriyaki entrée. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the teriyaki sauce was delicious. The chicken was very tender and the sauce was an excellent complement. The miso soup and the salad was the standard. You can't really screw that up. The California rolls were pretty good. I believe they used real crab meat, but I'm not too sure. Yes, that's how good the California rolls were . . . I couldn't even tell if they used imitation crab meat! I'd definitely go to Kirala again. Why did I deduct two stars? Well, first of all, we were seated at the "bar" right next to the grill. The grill was extremely hot and was making me perspire! I'm not even sure why they had stools there since at the end of the dinner, my face felt like it was melted off! Another star deduction was due to an old lady waitress who spilled a half eaten chicken teriyaki down my back as she was cleaning the table behind us. I didn't react in a negative manner because she was an old lady and I didn't want to hurt her feelings . . . so I told her it was ok and it was just an accident. But inside, I was furious. Basically, I ended up paying almost $100 for a chicken teriyaki dinner and my stained Lacoste polo I had to trash. Great. Yet, the food was delicious and I will be there again! read more

J and I love Kirala. We've eaten here at least 8 times in the past 2 years. Our tactic: stand in line 20 minutes before opening. It's a pain to get in otherwise, but the best things in life require challenge, no? The spanish mackerel sushi is hands down BEST I have ever eaten. J and I always sit at the bar and order sushi from the chalkboard (daily specials). The tempura is good but sushi is the standout. Never tried their robata, though it seems popular enough. J and I eat ourselves silly and the bill is usually $70 or $80 for the two of us. Not bad considering the high quality & quantity of sushi consumed. Bathroom clean, too. sukiyaki. tamago sushi. Like..did I just wait 1 hour to get in here on a Saturday night? Yes. Yes I did. And yes, it was worth it. My friend Jen W. let me try her kirala beer. It was ever so light and smooth. I will order one myself next time I go. So shout out to Jen W.! The tamago sushi is so good. Have you ever watched a movie where they're eating something and rather than focus on the scene you focus on the food they're eating? (I.e., the asian examples: Tampopo on ramen or Lunch Queen on omurice) The tamago sushi here is like that. Just looking at it makes you want to eat it. The good thing about ordering it here is that you can actually eat it!!! The sukiyaki was okay. I wish I ordered something else. Though the dish was hearty (as far as it can be with Japanese food) and full of great items like yam noodles, udon, mushrooms, tofu, beef, green onions, etc., it wasn't the right thing for me at the time I went. I should've went with my gut and ordered the tempura. I will definitely return here! for lunch! when it's cheaper and hopefully when the line isn't so dang long. read more

on our way back from napa, we stopped by kirala fo rsome sushi. turns out this place is probably better for robata in my opinion. other items on the menu such as the yudofu in hot broth (appetizer) and hamachi kama shioyaki were really tasty. given the generous portion of the sushi slices, this place is a good bang for your buck. read more

I came with big expectations of this place but end up pretty disappointed. I ordered four rolls thinking it would be enough for four people, but once the they came it look only for two people. I was surprise by how small the california roll was and how little the portions were. Usually when I buy a roll they give me 6-8 pieces but in here it was only for. I also ordered the spider roll and it was really burned. Even thought I mention the waitress that it was to share she never told us about how small the portions were. I truly don't understand the hype this place gets. The food is mediocre and the prices are high for the quality. Tables are super tight so I had to constantly get up out of my "isle seat" so the poor woman sitting next/behind me can get in and out of her chair. The worst was when my son ordered the yutofu and when the waitress set the dish down, I asked for a spoon. Instead of yes, let me get you a spoon for this broth filled bowl, she says, "That is not broth, just water Use the straining ladle to get out the food. You don't drink the broth." I replied nicely, "Okay, thanks, but can I get a spoon." Incredulously she replied, "You don't need a spoon." This repeated itself twice before I said, "I know I don't need a spoon, but can I still get one?" She huffed, "okay" and walked away. Another waiter came back with a spoon for my son who actually wanted it for his rice and miso soup. I didn't feel I needed to explain WHY my 10 year old son needs a spoon for his meal nor do I understand why I need to argue to get one. Very unpleasant service. read more

I have been wanting to go to this restaurant for a while based on its great reviews; it did not disappoint! I have often seen a huge line outside during most dinner hours, but we went on a Sunday and were able to get a table for 4 pretty quickly. We tried: - Lamb chops - really delicious, definitely order it medium-rare. I'm not sure why the menu says "lamb chops" because it's actually just one lamb chop per order. But it's amazing. - Gindara (Black Cod) - they were out of Hamachi-Kama and suggested we try the black cod. It was pretty good - a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. - Salmon Teriyaki - also really good, perfectly cooked and really juicy - Tempura dinner - the batter was really flavorful - Beef Teriyaki - also delicious! It comes with teriyaki and ponzu sauce. - Sushi - we had Uni, Unagi, Spider roll, and Caterpillar roll. All were good; you can tell the fish is extremely fresh We also had the tempura ice cream which was SO delicious! Overall, this is a great place for a nice dinner out. Kirala's sushi is excellent, as are the other items on the menu, but the experience is diminished by three factors. First, the portions are on the small side. Not tiny, but still smallish. Second, the prices are high, even for a sushi place. And third, the wait is often intolerably long. When I was living several blocks away, I could walk the dog there, get on the waiting list, walk him home, then walk back, and still be facing a decent wait. We had a really great dining experience here! We did have to wait a long time though - a bit over 2 hrs for a group of 4 people on a Saturday evening. I'd recommend you arrive around 8pm, when the wait is not as long. Despite the long wait, we did not waste our time. We went straight to the bar were we had beers and wine, but the best were the sakes - great selection! As far as the food - it was delicious! Can't list all the items, but we ordered a ton of food and everything was amazing (even though when I tried what some of my friends ordered and did not know what I was eating!) Lost business...sad. When do you ever really walk out of a restaurant even before tasting the food? Glad you asked...I'll tell you when. When while waiting for your table at the bar, the bartender serves everyone around you first, even if you were waiting the longest. I am a kind reviewer. I understand being a restaurateur is not easy and I almost always give the benefit of the doubt...but I was livid when after already waiting 20 minutes for a table at the bar, watching the bartender ignore the two of us as he painstakingly cleaned up the counter tops of patrons long gone (our area was the last to be cleaned), ask for orders and/or prepare orders for several other customers who came to the bar well after us, etc. He didn't even make eye-contact with us or acknowledge we were there as he made chitchat with another couple seated after us and said, as I made my complaint, "Oh, I'm sorry to disappoint you," in a disingenuous tone. I don't want to throw the "r" card, but if this was UNO. ... The only slight saving grace was that when I spoke with the manager/person in charge he was genuinely kind and apologetic. Our table was even finally ready, but it was too late, we still left. I doubt there will be any returns for us despite the rave review from friends...and for those of you who enjoy this place...keep on keeping on...but I prefer to support good, responsible eateries with staff who treat everyone with common courtesy and decency. Had a great experience tonight trying a new place. Looking through the reviews I agree with the majority that gave it awesome reviews. The sashimi is very fresh! The soba noodles left a delightful taste in my mouth, making me want me want more. The sweet potato pie is over-the-top delicious couldn't get enough of it. I am in love with this place. Always a long wait but just say you will sit at the counter. The scallops grilled with cream sauce and tobiko are excellent. The beef wrapped asparagus is great as well. The spicy crab roll with asparagus tempura was delicious and I really like their rock n roll because it had yellow tail along with the standard BBQ eel and avocado. The grilled items are fantastic - albeit a bit pricey. Love the squid, chicken, mushrooms, and hamachi kama. Go early if you want the hamachi kama, though - they only have a few each day and run out really fast. I recommend going early regardless of the kama since there is usually a small line outside before the door opens that grows as the night goes on. read more

Kirala is a great find for interesting variety of Japanese food. Parking is easy nearby and you will find things not normally on the menu, like Japanese sweet potatoe cheese cake. Highly recommended, though you might want to prepare yourself for a wait for seating. read more

I've come here 3-4 times a month for many months - since I've lived here. I used to live in Japan - and I think there food is pretty good and authentic. However, after tonight, I won't be returning. I walked in at 8:00 PM. I was told it would be 30 minutes. Sounds great. at 8:50 I was seated. Okay, whatever. Shit happens, right? I ordered a beer, gyoza, Yosenabe and Nabeyaki udon, along with an anagi avacado roll at 9:10. Took like 20 minutes to place an order - but fine, okay. I get it, things get busy. At 9:20 I noticed that people that sat down after I ordered received their salads and appetizers. Okay. Whatever. At 9:30 I stood up and went to talk to my waiter and asked for my beer. Yes. I waited 20 minutes to get my drink. At 9:35, shortly after receiving my salad and beer (20-25 minutes after I ordered) - the waiter came back. They were out of Nabeyaki Udon and Yosenabe. He blamed the kitchen. What? After 25 minutes, you're telling me I HAVE TO ORDER AGAIN?! AND I STILL DONT HAVE MY APPETIZER? He blamed a computer problem. Okay. So where the fuck is your notepad? Why aren't you writing shit down? I told him FINE. IM FUCKING STARVING. ITS BEEN 1 HOUR AND 40 MINUTES FOR MY 30 MINUTE WAIT TO GET A TABLE AND I HAVEN'T EATEN ANYTHING. So I get the Unaju. At 9:45 I receive the Unaju. 15 minutes after I ordered - hey - like a normal restaurant. So I ask - Hi, I also ordered Unagi and avacado roll. Remeber? I ORDERED A ROLL OF SUSHI 35 MINUTES AGO....He said "oh let me check" - He ran to the sushi bar. He blamed the computer again. He said that the sushi bar did not get the order. He also said that the sushi bar was closed so I could no longer get my roll. So There it is : TL/DR I waited 50 minutes to get a table after being told it was 30. Then I waited 20 minutes to order. Then I waited 20 minutes to be told that my food was not available. Then I waited 20 minutes to only received half of my new order order.
