A great fast, often non-stop service to London offers a quick getaway and you can also get to the countryside easily by going the other way. In Zone 6 so Travelcard prices apply. Almost always staffed, it's the centrepiece of Surbiton and is busy all day long. Plenty of shops just outside and a McDonalds to the left if you can face it. Buses leave from across the road to Kingston upon Thames and a busy taxi rank is right in front of the station.

Norbiton station is on the Kingston loop in south west London, about half an hour from Waterloo…read moreStation in central London. It is the stop before Kingston, and one gets off here for Kingston Hospital. It is in zone 5, and trains stopping here are operated by South Western. Due to the proximity of the hospital and local businesses, it does seem busier than the average suburban station, and certainly busier than its small-scale low-key looks would suggest. It also has something of a distinguished history apparently, Queen Victoria always used this station when visiting the area on her royal train, as it's the only one in the vicinity with the platforms at ground level! Also, the station was used as a set in the sitcom 'The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin'. There are no steps on the platform heading south to London; on the northward platform there are some steps, but also a step-free ramp exit (which is sometimes closed). The ticket office opens 'till about 7 pm-ish in the evenings, when it closes (it also acts as the waiting room.) The website says it's open to 20h30 not in my experience as a regular commuter. There are 60 spaces for cycle parking, and also a small car park. The station doesn't have a taxi rank. Oyster cards do not operate out here pretty annoyingly. There are plans (at time of writing) to roll out oyster cards on all suburban London mainline trains, but Kingston will be the last area to get these sometime towards the end of 2010. The station has a really excellent independent coffee stall, selling coffees, teas, juices and various pastries. The proprietor always has a friendly smile and remembers his regulars' orders. Big queues in the morning rush hour.

Notting Hill Gate is the perfect place to stop if you're visiting Notting Hill because it's right in the center of everything. There are many streets with colorful houses right nearby and lots of little cafes and restaurants to choose from.

We needed to transfer from our usual line to another to explore London a little more. When I walked into the station, I was drawn in by the massive curved canopy and the larger platform landings. This station was built in 1868 and can imagine what it looked like then. Many years before cars, people were commuting through London via underground rail. The place has history and it was cool to see, while you are on your way to see other places.

Go that way &'prepare for TSA style check. Solo travelers go through quickly. I was allowed to move up in the line & got glaring looks. Put your items in a bin, get the body scan & retrieve your items. You're in like Flin & the rest is a waiting game for your flight or enjoy the shopping & the restaurant

Specifically we took the Elizabeth Line to get to Stratford Station. Had to wait about 15 minutes for our train to arrive. It is helpful that there is a monitor showing folks when the next train is scheduled to arrive for whichever train line they are waiting for. It was less expensive to travel to our hotel this way as compared to using a taxi , bus, or other means of transportation. It was smooth trip that took about 30 minutes. Faster than the other modes of transportation. The Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 Underground station is convenient to use and easy to navigate even for tourists like us. The signs give good direction and instructions. If you have questions, there are attendants all over the station to help. Just ask.

The first station in Richmond was built in 1846, not on the same site as the present building which…read moreopened its doors in 1937. Richmond station serves as a terminus for zone 4 district line services and also as a stop for many national rail services out of Waterloo and into Surrey. You can get to Hammersmith on the district line in around 15 minutes, or into Waterloo in around 16 mins on the main line fast service, of which there are around 2 per hour. This makes Richmond very commutable. The final piece of the puzzle serving North London is the Silverlink service, which, if you can brave the crack addicts can get you all the way to Hampsted in around 40 mins. It feels like the slowest train in the world right now, although TfL are taking over management so perhaps it will improve. There are 7 platforms, 1+2 for main line services, 3+4 for Silverlink, and 5-7 for district line. I would advise skipping the ticket office and machines in the entrance hall and going to the ones on platform level which are much less busy. There is a front entrance onto Richmond High Street, and a handy back entrance onto Church Road which is much more pleasant, but floods everytime it rains. It was recently voted South West Trains 'Station of the Year 2007' in mysterious circumstances. If you're hungry, I would advise popping into Source next door and getting a take out, which you can scoff on the way into London...

Transport for London have just renamed the sliverlink service 'London Overground' and there is new trains on the way in 2008 or 2009. I personally find it to be slow but quite good for getting to Camden, King's Cross etc without going into Zone 1. There is a new Marks and Spencer where the Door shop used to be by the ticket barriers in the entrance hall. I still think Phil is right about going to Source though instead though!

Well, that probably should be surprising considering that Croydon is a pretty major metropolitan hub, so of course there is going to be a pretty large station here. Like a lot of stations, it's not bad at all, and reasonably easy to get around. Oh, and there are lots of shops there as well.
