The Kings Stores, a classic London pub near Liverpool Street station is tucked away on this small back street. My old classmate, Leslie, who is now a Londoner, took us there for Sunday Roast. Atmosphere is jovial with lots of groups enjoying their pints and watching football on the telly. But while I've been in London, I developed a taste for local Beavertown IPA and it is served here from the tap. It is refreshing and delicious ice cold! (Note: an English pint is 24 oz vs 16 oz back in the States)
But we are here for the house specialty Sunday Roast with a choice of Roast Beef, Chicken, Porchetta or Vegan Wellington among the regular pub menu fare. We start with sharing a Black Pepper Squid Niçoise Salad with fried whitebait (sardines) and sliced egg, which was very tasty, crispy and fresh. Of course, I had to try the soup of the day, which is a creamy puréed butternut squash, also very tasty.
Around the table, we had 2 Roast Chickens and Roast Porchetta. Each roast plate was served with roasted potatoes, carrot, kale, red cabbage and Yorkshire pudding and a giant popover. It's a big meal with either a 1/2 chicken or a 1 inch slice of pork roll. I thought my son would go with the Roast Beef, but he went rogue and ordered the Cider Battered Fish & Chips, which had a huge fried fish fillet almost covering all the chips. Somehow, after all that, we still had room for dessert after walking around London all day. So, it was the Sticky Toffee Pudding and the Dark Chocolate Brownie, both topped with ice cream that finally did us in. read more
