Murph's Creamery & Grill - Malt, jalapeño mac&cheese bites and cheese curds!

Delicious cheese curds!!! I come to Murph's to load up on cheese curds whenever I'm in the area…read morevisiting my husband's family. I also love to get the peanut butter malt and the jalapeño mac & cheese bites. Yum

Kinda average and a little pricey, but a local alternative to franchises and chains nearby. It's a…read morejumpin' joint, so don't be surprised if you have a wait a bit. Once you order, you might be waiting a little longer than you do at a typical fast food joint because everything is cooked to order. There is a veggie burger, too, if that is your desire. The menu is a bit sparse but covers most of the bases with burgers, hot dogs and a hand-breaded tenderloin. There is also barbecue pulled pork, chicken strips, and chicken sandwiches. There's also an array of grilled cheese with variations. Variations? Can you improve upon the basic grilled cheese sammich? Sure! Add bacon and tomato. Bacon? Sure! Everything is better with bacon! That's what I ordered, it was ooey-gooey as a grilled cheese should be, and the bacon and tomato just added to the experience! Deserts? Of course! Choose from sundaes or, as in my case, a milkshake or malt. I opted for a raspberry malt, which was thick and tasty, but thin enough to pull through a straw. (Unlike a certain fast-food joint where you can hold a malt upside down and it won't budge. Don't try that at Murph's!) I don't get this way very often, but next time I'm in the twin cities of Tama and Toledo, I'll be stopping back here.

A9 Chinese Restaurant - Unspicy but delicious Mongolian beef! Super tender and tasty but be sure to tell them if you want it to be spicy!!

I would never want to be the reason somebody has to continue serving after closing time! We ordered chicken with mushrooms, Mongolian beef, and fried rice. We paid less than $40! We were told to expect 10-15 minutes wait because everything is made fresh. 12 minutes later our food was ready to go. The restaurant is clean and decorated like any other middle American Chinese restaurant. The ladies restroom was exceptionally clean. Watching the fish in the fish tanks passes the time nicely but I would have appreciated a label saying what kind of fish they are. One tank says "his name is Mushroom" which is very appropriate for the shape of the fish! We had a very short drive to our hotel and the car smelled amazing. The fried rice was perfect, absolutely perfect! It was perfectly cooked, tender but separate grains of buttery well seasoned rice with super sweet peas. Excellent flavor! The chicken with mushrooms was exactly what my Mama was hoping for. The Mongolian beef was very tender and saucy but not at all spicy. This is my only complaint... don't show me a spicy red pepper on the menu and then give me a dish with no spice! Don't get me wrong, the dish is delicious! It's just NOT SPICY! I wanted some heat on my meat!

Very good food! Service is great! Nice clean establishment! I eat there often when I'm in Toledo!read more

Los Charros Mexican Grill - Queso fundido

Los Charros Mexican Grill

I rarely go for Mexican food outside of Texas, but on a recent business trip my local colleagues…read morehighly recommended Los Charros for lunch - so why not? I was pleased with the variety of selections they offer. I chose the Burrito Chorizo. Wrapped in a large flour tortilla and topped with ranchero sauce & cheese, the fillings were generous and included rice, beans, ground meat and, of course, the namesake chorizo. Served with lettuce and guacamole on the side, the meal was ample and quite tasty. My favorite Mexican restaurants in Texas make their tortillas in-house - the tortilla here had the texture and flavor of pre-prepared. Not a big deal, but I did notice the difference. Because this was a business lunch, I was not able to try one of the key items on which I base my impressions of Mexican restaurants - no margarita for me this visit. The iced tea substitute was just OK. Of course, our meal was preceded with complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and crispy, but the salsa lacked any meaningful heat - but, hey, this is Iowa, not Texas. Although not spicy it did have nice flavor. I'd be remiss if I didn't offer kudos to our server, a very pleasant young man who answered all of our questions with ease. Thanks to Los Charros, I am reconsidering my "no Mexican food outside of Texas rule." I liked it. Well done!

When my party of 8 arrived it wasn't busy. So it is a mystery as to why the service was so slow…read more Some of our dishes arrived incorrectly (chicken tacos with corn tortillas arrived as beef with flour e.g). The rice and beans and other sides that are included with dinners didn't show up so we had to ask for them. And my daughter's sides never arrived at all. We simply gave up asking. The food was really salty. Not seasoned well.... Just salty. The guacamole tasted like a standard mix without any actual fresh avocado in it. The margaritas were a weak mix from a bottle. Sadly I was hoping for some tasty Mexican food but did not find it at this place. The staff was friendly though and the food was inexpensive.
