Whenever I am in town and am looking for somewhere to go for a bite, I often come here. I have fish and chips as always but I do have the odd pasty now and then. Prices are not too bad and I do find this place to be very busy particularly during the weekdays when school children are on their lunch break. But then again that does not surprise me and it does not surprise me that this fish and chip shop is quite popular. Staff are top class and the shop itself is very clean. Providing there is not a queue, you will not be waiting long for your food and savour the food whilst it lasts. I'm coming back here without question.

The man that served us both was so helpful - my husband ordered Egg, Chips & Beans, and I dilly-dallied over whether I should have a chicken curry with chips. He assured me the curry would be lovely, and he could make it a little spicier for me. It was wonderful - like a true homemade Indian curry, not an English one. But the Topper, he offered "Do you want normal chips or battered chips?" We'd never heard of battered chips, so I ordered them, for a change. They were AMAZING!!!!! The BEST CHIPS I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!!! They were so yummy, i couldn't wait to go back the next day. But it was closed because it was a Sunday :-( I was so disappointed! Going back to West Brom end of October, and will HAVE to stop by Atlantis. Can't wait!

There is another chip shop opposite which means Hill Top Fish Bar does have competition. If I'm being brutally honest it is Hill Top Fish Bar all the way for me. I always buy fish and chips from Hill Top Fish Bar although I do like the odd scallop now and then. There have been times where I have found the chips a little too salty as well as the fish being on the greasy side but that is me being fussy. I am not someone who often has gravy with my chips. But the last time I had chips from Hill Top Fish Bar with gravy, I felt as if I was in heaven. Simply gorgeous and I loved it. If you do intend to go to Hill Top Fish Bar, I'll give you a bit of advice of when you might not want to go. Friday evenings from 1700-1900 are very busy and you might just find yourself waiting in a long queue. So basically don't go between 1700-1900 on a Friday.

So it's fair to say, they are not the only one's doing what they do within close proximity of each other. I have to say their fish and chips are good, not the best I've tasted over my years but there not too bad. They have their days, one minute I can walk in there and their fish and chips are really good and then the next time I go in there; they're not that good. I wish they would be a bit more consistent. I wouldn't say this is a negative though because in all fairness they do, do a good job. I tend to find that this chip shop has more people than the other chip shop, so I guess people are regular visitors to Hill Top.

They almost always cook the fish fresh so it is hot with crispy batter. You have to wait around five minutes but I'd rather wait and have good quality than quickly have bad quality! I personally don't like the skin left on one side which many places did. It can sometimes leave a fishy taste I think. There was no skin at Masons...the batter was very light and crispy and the fish was cooked just right. A+ Masons! The fries may have tasted better if I had eaten there....after carrying home they were not hot and that makes a huge difference with fries for me. They weren't bad...just not special in any way. Cradley Heath and Old Hill have A LOT of fish and chip shops. It is really difficult to find…read morenew-fangled trendy things like sushi or houmous. But that's a good thing! Fat equals flavour! Sea Waves Fish Bar is probably my favourite chip shop in these parts. The chips are nice and crispy, the fish is great but it is the doner kebabs that are incredible. I can't even attempt to intellectualise or rationalise this, there's just something magical about the way Sea Ways combine cheap sheep off-cuts, lettuce, pitta and mint sauce. The service is speedy and with a smile. The prices are reasonable. Oh, and did I mention? The kebabs are incredible.
