We love kimpton hotels and we are members of IHG group. This Kimpton canary hotel is at the most popular location in downtown Santa Barbara. Walking distances to EV superchargers, shops, restaurants and bars. Also not far away from train station and the beach. Hotel provides free bike rentals. Kimpton hotels are all cozy little boutique hotels with nice amenities. Little bodega in the lobby, gym and rooftop pool for hotel guests, on site restaurant and bar opens daily. Complimentary coffee and tea in the mornings. Also early evening wine hours. Our junior suite with a small balcony was cozy and relaxing, bathroom was spacious, bed & pillows were so comfy. Evening turndown service with cookies and S. Pellegrino waters was a nice touch of luxury. We absolutely loved our weekend stay at this Kimpton! Absolutely love Kimpton properties. My friend and I stayed 4 nights, 5 days. Check-in was easy, very friendly staff (Kimberly was GREAT). The valet was fast and efficient. We were upgraded to a suite which was wonderful. The room location was very quite, no noise issues. Plenty of room in the living room, bathroom and bedroom, a lot of charm. The rooms seem very clean and well equipped with a mini refrigerator Nespresso machine and robes. The only item missing oddly in the rooms are hotel luggage racks. We went up to the roof to see the pool, looked nice, it was empty due to the cooler weather temps in Santa Barbara during our stay. We did enjoy the "Wine Happy Hour" and the complementary Coffee station in the morning. There are ice machines on every floor and on the ice machine you can also get filter water for your water bottles. To note: it is a dog loving paradise at the hotel, dogs everywhere, big dogs little dogs, I love dogs so I had fun watching all of them. OK, so our only 2 criticisms are is the fee for parking per day $55... crazy! The second criticism is why can't the hotel spare space for a small gym? The hotel is affiliated with a Free 24 hour gym, "Key 2 Gym" which worked out great, BUT it's a 16 minute walk... a 1.07miles. Might not seem much, but I work out daily at 5:00AM to get it out of the way. Walking on State Street at 4:45 AM in the dark, when the only people on the street are the aggressive homeless does not make me feel safe at all. I really love Kimpton properties. I almost always have a great experience at them and if there is one available where I need to stay I book it without hesitation. Kimpton hotels are very pet friendly and that always gets extra stars from me. They don't charge any pet fee or have size restrictions and if you ask them, they will provide food and water bowls for your stay. As someone who always travels with her dog, that adds a lot of value for me. This location even told me that, while I couldn't bring the dog to the restaurant on site, I could bring her to the nightly wine reception. I did not ever end up attending one but it's the thought that counts. The location was great. It was about a 15-minute walk to beach and we did walk to Stearns Wharf multiple times during our stay. It typically took us about 10 minutes to walk to one of the many restaurants in the area that we had decided to go to each time. There are lots of coffee shops, wine bars and places to eat within walking distance so we ended up leaving our car parked for most of our stay. I believe the valet parking was an additional $50 or $60 a night but you do get in and out privileges. We just found that we didn't need the car much to get around on our visit and in the time it takes to have somebody pull it out for you, you could have already walked halfway to your destination. The amenities are nice. They have a rooftop pool, fitness center and then their complimentary coffee, etc. I did not end up taking advantage of any of those because I travel with my dog, so I can't speak directly to the quality of any of them, but I know most people appreciate having extras like that. Our room was cute and comfortable and felt very cozy. It was honestly probably smaller than I expected for the price point, but it had everything that we needed and I was happy with my stay. If you need a pet friendly, walkable place to stay, and you aren't on a super tight budget, I would definitely recommend looking into this hotel. read more

What an Amazing "boutique" hotel. The pleasant stay started even before we arrived. A couple emails sent with excellent information about the hotel's amenities. Travis (valet) was our first point of contact and proved helpful with the car, bags and some insider beverage suggestions. We had a nice conversation too. Edwin checked us in, graciously and provided a full set of details including an upgrade to a suite. We used a credit card that offers "free upgrade" but you never know what that will mean. @ the Kimpton Canary it meant an extremely nice room. Large sitting area, with Nespresso coffee maker, refrigerator and large tv. The king size bed was in a room by itself overlooking the courtyard with fountain. The bed and linens were very comfortable. The bathroom has a separate shower, tub and toilet areas. Bath salts included. Robes and slippers in the closet. Amenities like AM coffee in the lobby or afternoon wine hour are nice to enjoy. The music is jazzy cozy heartfelt inviting. The decor is very chic, modern but not pretentious. Spanish tiles and colorful furniture. Service is a standout. A note in the bathroom said ask for what you need. So i tested it, asking for a lip balm by text and it was sent to the room. I also asked, Ingrid for a bottle of bubbly to be sent up with a birthday card to surprise my wife. It was delivered and made a grateful impression. A couple cookies and another note as well. Its Santa Barbara time, but its also Mediocre Mon! I stayed at this IHG property in Santa Barbara for a b'ness event. Positives: Chloe at check in was super nice, and Hunter at the valet took great care of us; Big room w/ two double beds; The staff at the b'ness event on the 6th Floor rooftop were super nice. Negatives: Not sure what I received for my high level, Ambassador status. As far as I could tell I only received a $10 food & beverage credit (pretty weak vs Marriott, Hilton & Hyatt); Two night stay was over $1,000 including $49/night valet fee. This was supposedly a special rate for the conference; I did not receive a copy of my bill via email; The wifi was spotty; The toilet paper was so thin it was more Holiday Inn vs high end Kimpton; There is no gym onsite, so you can use the Golds Gym next door. The problem w/ Golds is that you have to provide a lot of personal info (i.e., DOB) to use the pass. You also have to agree to receive their marketing emails (lame AF). This is my first year staying at high end IHG properties (Intercontinental & Kimpton). Thus far, I have not been impressed. I have high level status at all the majors. Marriott, Hilton & Hyatt treat me much better: I receive upgraded rooms, free bfast, and gifts. read more

I had a great stay here! My visit to Santa Barbara started with a huge flight delay, landing around 4am. Not only was I exhausted, I felt a sense of relief knowing that I booked at a Kimpton (vs a small B&B) feeling confident there would be someone waiting at the front desk to check me in. When I arrived, a kind man at the front desk exclaimed "You made it!" which made me feel so welcomed despite being in a slightly delirious state. I was checked in quickly and was pleased to see a beautiful room that was a nice size with a large king-size bed that looked so comfortable. The window had been open in my room so it was surprisingly really cold - so much so that I had to go to bed in a sweatshirt since the room took awhile to warm up. But the bed was so comfortable - once of the most comfortable beds I've slept in for awhile. There is no fridge, robes or mini bar but the room had everything needed. Plus, there is a restaurant downstairs so super convenient if you're looking to grab a quick bite. Additionally, the staff here are a great balance of being laid back but also very helpful and kind. The service really enhanced my experience. Overall, comfort of the bed in a peaceful and clean room coupled with the great service made for a wonderful stay. Would definitely recommend! read more

The best hotel in Santa Barbara!! When we first arrived, we were greeted by a very kind and friendly valet. Mind you, the valet was consistently kind and respectful throughout the entire time. In the lobby, you're met with a staircase leading down, as well as a lounge two areas. It's an absolutely stunning hotel; both inside and out. There was a photo booth in the lobby, which my family seemed to really enjoy. I also noticed a dog bowl--a thoughtful touch that makes perfect sense for a pet-friendly hotel. A+ for that! Our check-in was very smooth; as well as the check out process. The hotel rooms are clean, fresh and organized. A lot of times, hotel rooms can feel cluttered by the unnecessary use of space - this was not the case! Our room was spacious and quiet, which we very much appreciated. The hotel location itself is perfect! You're a few minutes down from the outdoor shops. We took a morning stroll to Lululemon, Vans and other little stores. You're also surrounded by a lot of restaurant options; which is very convenient! The staff were incredible! A special thank you to the hotel manager, Ingrid, for her assistance. Really enjoyed staying at this hotel. Location is very close to funk zone area of Santa Barbara. Good food and shopping all around. Dog friendly and it was fun seeing all the dog guests in the lobby. Super clean and well taken care of. Beds were incredibly comfortable. Shower had great water pressure and shampoo and conditioner they provided was high quality unlike most hotels. Brought us cookies when we first came to the room which was nice. Free wine from 5-6pm in the lobby and little bites. Valet was $50/night was steep but cheaper than any other parking options nearby. Had chance to revisit the Kimpton Canary Hotel for short stop on our way back to LA from our main vacation. It was awesome. We had stayed several years ago before the remodel and definitely were impressed with the modern updates but with maintaining the historic Spanish charm. Valet service was fantastic and brought all our family's luggage straight to the room and filled our ice bucket for us. Check in was seamless. Great Platinum Elite benefits at Kimpton and this hotel did great job of honoring the loyalty program status. Well positioned in downtown Santa Barbara. Excited about it being walking distance to Azul Cantina which we frequent when up in Santa Barbara. Room as mentioned was updated nicely. Comfy beds. Good size bathroom with separate full bath and shower. Large TV. Calming decor. Rooftop pool is nice and great views. Free access to Gold's Gym next door (just need room key and ID). Definitely worth staying at Kimpton Canary Hotel and will continue to come back here for our downtown Santa Barbara trips. read more

Poor customer service, they often don't answer the phone when calling. The staff appears to be uninformed and uninterested in basic knowledge about the hotel, amenities and details. How deep is the rooftop pool? They didn't know? What were the options for NYE dinners and entertainment? They didn't know... a few of them gave incorrect information which was not only discouraging but also a waste of time. The staff is clearly poorly trained and the property is mediocre at best. read more

Stayed here for 2 nights in May. Hotel rooms are overpriced and although pet friendly, there are no pet relief areas. There were also no amenities in our room for our small dog. The room had no chairs or small table to sit at. The mattress was very uncomfortable, you could feel the indentations from the numerous guests who have slept on it. Thus making it impossible to get a good nights rest. I would not recommend this hotel. read more

Kimptons are great, especially if you have a pet. They are super pet friendly, and I love that. On this trip, unfortunately I didn't have my fur child but enjoyed a girl's weekend in Santa Barbara. We arrived at the hotel a little after noon and we had just planned on leaving our bags and setting out for the day since I knew that check-in wasn't until 4pm. It took a few minutes for someone to come to the front desk but that was ok, they were decorated for Christmas, and we were enjoying looking at the lights. To our surprise, our room was ready, and we set off to the 4th floor to see our room. We had a two-queen bedroom with about a 6inch "balcony". The room was very spacious, and the bathroom was large. It had a separate tub and shower. Plenty of space to for girls to get ready. As with all Kimptons, they serve free wine from 5pm-6pm and have a coffee bar in the mornings from like 6-10? Maybe 5-10. We did not have food at the hotel but did get a couple drinks at the bar and the bar staff was very friendly and recommended some special holiday drinks. They do have a rooftop pool that we didn't get to enjoy but it's beautiful at night and has great views of Santa Barbara. They were hosting a free yoga class in the morning, but it was a little early for our late night. The Canary is a little pricey, but I think it's worth it, especially if you have a fur baby. It was quiet, the beds were comfortable and it's in a good location just right off State Street so you can walk to everything. If you want a comfortable, safe place to stay that's a little bougie, than the canary is the place to stay. read more

I've never had a bad experience at a Kimpton hotel. Canary did not disappoint. I was here for a weekend during this past September and decided to stay here. I typically stay at Milo because its across the street from the beach but they've been in serious need of a remodel so It's been some time since I've stayed there. My second choice was always the Pendry because... well... its the Pendry.. but I decided to stay at the Canary this time around to see what all the buzz is about. The hotel is very well maintained and has that Santa Barbara spanish charm that I adore! I booked using my IHG app and upon arrival they upgraded my room to a juliet suite which was fabulous. They also gave me a complimentary tote bag with water bottles which was needed because for some reason mother nature thought we'd like 85 degree weather. I didn't get many pictures of the room oops! but it was comfortable and quite large. The beds were soft as you'd expect from a Kimpton hotel and the pillows were V plush! Horrible experience at this hotel! We paid over $2K to stay two nights in a suite. We got no sleep. A lot of young people book rooms at the hotel to get drunk and play loud music until 2, 3 am. I was here for a business conference for two days May 2023. The hotel was clean, with modern decor, pool on the rooftop and paid valet parking $40/night. The food served at our breakfast and lunch was top notch and the service was great. There was a breakfast bar- one day with egg sandwiches, the other with avocado toast (stellar) along with coffee, teas, yogurt, fruit, etc. The beds were comfortable and the room size fine. We didn't have a great, view, but that's okay because it was for business. The hotel smelled of recent paint, so we opened the windows and it was a little loud outside in the middle of the night - remember this is downtown, walking distance to State Street. The bathroom was clean, but had louvred doors, which was a little awkward because I was sharing the room with my female colleague. If it was my husband, wouldn't have bothered me and it is nice not to have a moldy smelling bathroom. read more

One of the very best quality hotels we've ever stayed in, and we have stayed in hundreds around the world. The location is perfect - just off State Street. The facility is top notch, the decor is amazing. Everything was obsessively clean. Our room was perfect - king 4 poster bed with a quality mattress, couch, sitting area, controllable A/C, bath and shower separate. We arrived to a welcome gift. We booked through Chase so we got a $160 food/beverage credit, which turned out to be a good concept but not great if you read my review of Finch and Fork (the hotel restaurant). There is an amazing rooftop pool with spectacular views. The entire staff was top notch, very friendly and professional. I can't pick out a single thing that was not 100% awesome. We looked around at a lot of different hotels, and won the jackpot with this location. It was so good we are booking another trip that we hadn't planned on. read more

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights for our 9-year anniversary. The location is good. It's convenient for dining and shopping. Everything fell short. Guest Room Because we booked our room through American Express, we were "upgraded" to a room with a Juliet balcony. As it turned out, we were facing a gas station right in front of us! The room was not well kept, either. Particularly, the furniture was worn out as you can see in my photos. If you are spending a couple of hundred dollars, maybe it's acceptable. However, we were paying about $700 a night! Public Areas It's an old building, but the lobby is just beautiful. However, we were underwhelmed by the roof top swimming pool. It looked so much nicer and bigger online. Service The valet guys were great. They were friendly and were working hard. The staff at the front desk were fine, too, at least for the most part. My girlfriend called the front desk and asked for a shower cap. It literally took them 15 minutes to get it to our room. If they were short staffed and couldn't get it to us right away, they could have told us. Conclusions We ended up not spending time in our room or at the hotel. If we just needed a room to sleep in, we could have stayed at a cheap hotel. We booked at Kimpton Canary because we wanted to relax in our room and enjoy the hotel amenities, which looked amazing online. We brought up these issues with Kimpton Hotels and American Express. To be fair, I want to acknowledge that we were refunded for part of the stay. In the past, I've always made a point of staying at Kimpton hotels whenever I'm traveling with one of my four-footed children. The prices are usually fairly high, and the rooms are pretty small, but you couldn't beat the way they always made my dogs and I feel welcome. That is, until now. I've stayed at this property a couple of times in the past few years, but this time things were different in a bad way: 1. The room prices were even higher than I remember them being 2. Housekeeping provided lackluster, non-responsive service 3. Management's focus now seems to be exclusively on making a profit, without providing value to the clients During my three night stay, there was one period of a couple of hours when my Hooligans were alone in the room. Prior to this, they had visited the beach and been bathed, so they were completely pooped and ready to sleep the sleep if the innocent. As it it turned out, one of my boys wasn't asleep the entire time - he woke up long enough to briefly scratch at the door. He left a couple of shallow marks on the lower panel of the wooden door. When I saw it, I wasn't worried about it. It was so minor that if it had happened in my home I would have completely ignored it. After I drove home from Santa Barbara, I reviewed the bill they'd emailed me a couple of hours after my departure, and I saw not one but two different charges (one on the 1st morning and another on the 2nd) for "Extra Cleaning Fees" totaling $400! I called the hotel and ended up talking to a manager. He told me that the fees were to correct the scratch my dog left on the door. After some discussion, he admitted that there was only one scratch, so he agreed to remove one of the two cleaning fees, leaving me still stuck with a charge of $250! My attempts to further reason with the manager went nowhere; he agreed that the amount of the fee wasn't in line with the cost of repairing "the damage", but the hotel wanted compensation for the fact that the room would be unavailable to rent for what might be a couple of hours - who knew that this Kimpton was now renting their rooms by the hour!? I ended up being told I'd have to talk to the General Manager if I wanted them to consider reducing the fee, so I asked the manager I was talking to to have the GM call me - he never did... If you, like me, have used the Kimpton chain in the past because they're so welcoming to our Canine family members, I suggest you reconsider staying here in the future, as the place simply isn't as dog friendly as it used be. read more

We were given 2 drink vouchers because our room was not ready at check in. A nice gesture , however when attempting to redeem we were advised only applied to $16/$17 dollar drinks. OK- there were a lot of pro's to this hotel but there were also some things that needed to be called out. PROS- First, the location was amazing! We were able to walk to a lot of places for sight seeing, parking was easily accessible in a parking garage right next to the hotel and the lobby was beautiful! They included free coffee until 10 am (not a fan) but it was a nice touch. They also had fruit infused water throughout the day. The lobby was beautiful and had an open concept and on the smaller side. CONS- The areas of improvement needed to be the room itself. It was on the older side so a few things definitely needed to be repaired or replaced (vanity mirror, tables in the room and shower head). I forgot to take a picture of the vanity in the bathroom but it was bad! Very chipped and old. A plus to the room was it's size though! The room also felt a bit dusty/ muggy which wasn't great. POOL- Unfortunately, we weren't able to enjoy the pool because it was full and no chairs left. The kids wouldn't have had fun anyway so we went to beach instead. Small pool- made for adults who want to lay out and take a nap. Very quiet and very small. FOOD- didn't eat at the hotel, but tons of places nearby! We've stayed at other Kimpton hotels in SoCal and this one is equally great if not better. It's nicely located next to state st in the heart of Santa Barbara. From the valet to the front desk they were all professional and helpful to all Our needs upon our arrival. The hotel is very well maintained and we loved the architecture of the building. We loved Finch and Fork restaurant and ate ther numerous times and every bite was delicious. The roof top pool and bar area was great too and empty while we were ther which was nice and quiet. Their 5pm Happy hour was funn with good wine and delicious appetizers and we met a great funn couple from Scottsdale that we made go to our piano bar reservations later in the week. Lol. The canary kimpton and staff is really great and you won't be disappointed. read more

We stayed here for two nights on a honeymoon and had a great experience. - The front desk was very friendly and gave us a nice bottle of wine in our room as part of our celebration. - The rooms were extremely clean and well decorated. - We only had time to try drinks and appetizers at the restaurant, but everything we tried was delicious. - It was a little too cold for a swim, but we took the morning coffee (available in the lobby each morning) up to the pool rooftop. Beautiful view! - Location was PERFECT! Just a 20 minute walk to the beach, with plenty of stores and restaurants to stop at along the way. Alright, but disappointing for a 4 star luxury hotel. Summary: dog friendly, comfy bed, but overpriced for the room quality & lacking in customer service. To start off, there was a system error so they assigned us the wrong room. We literally scanned the key card & opened the door into an occupied room, where a large dog ran towards us. Not sure how that happened. Grant, the front desk employee, gave us a free upgrade as an apology, although he was noticeably more bubbly/friendly to other guests even though we expressed that we were understanding of the mistake. He continued to be cold towards us at happy hour as well, which was a stark contrast to the level of service that he provided to the people around us, & how the other employees treated us. It made us feel unwelcome & a little uncomfortable. Less Concerning Cons: - walls were very thin & you can hear a lot from your neighbors - window wouldn't close & was missing a handle - only hotel parking option was valet for $45 (or a public lot for $3/hr next door) - no pet relief areas despite being very pet friendly Pros: - no pet fee, room service provided dog bowls and a dog bed - manager-hosted happy hour was nice: @5-6pm you get a free glass of wine & a little snack - bed was very comfy: neither of us woke up with aches or pains - we liked the small details in the room: Nespresso machine, nicely scented soaps & lotions Overall we expected a little more (especially in customer service) for our stay. We'd love to give other Kimpton locations a try but we likely won't be returning to this one. read more

This hotel has a lot of issues that they need to work out, starting with the fact that their reservations team is not onsite and doesn't know the layout of the hotel. We made a reservation months in advance and asked for a connecting room on the first floor since it was a family of four with two LARGE dogs and the reservations team was very accommodating and said it wouldn't be a problem. On our drive over, we called the hotel to confirm and they said that our rooms were on the 4th and 5th floor (...) and that it wasn't their fault because their reservations team wasn't onsite. We were able to get our rooms next to each other but downgraded, nor was it connecting to each other, BUT it was connecting to another room where a dog was staying and there were sniffs all night due to the three dogs being in way close vicinity of each other. When we checked in the person at the front desk said she would send up some plant pals (very cute idea btw) but we never got them. We asked for lotion and toothbrushes later that night and got lotion only. The rooms are very spacious but we were not pleased with the room arrangements - it was also really loud from the hotel just rummaging around + the valet being right downstairs. Overall, staying here made our birthday weekend not very relaxing. We were planning on getting some brunch at the hotel but just decided to go elsewhere. read more

As someone who LOVES a good hotel and is very partial to five stars, let me just say that this Kimpton totally blew it out of the water and was the best four star hotel I've stayed at in ages. I honestly don't know what people are complaining about... Room: we got the most basic king room and the room was huge and beautiful! We left the standing balcony doors open at night and it was so peaceful. We never heard any neighbors or anyone in the hall (in contrast to reviews saying the walls are paper thin..so not sure if it depends on where in the hotel you are)? Amenities: this Kimpton is the GOAT when it comes to amenities. Cute bike cruisers with helmets are free to borrow to ride down to the beaches or wharf. Every room also gets a free class at Corepower which was fun and we used one morning..just a few blocks away and super easy to just book a class and then give the Kimpton password when you checked in. There were also lots of coupons for a free drink or buy one get one free wineries in town, all available on the website they text you when you check in. The rooftop pool is stunning! We were there during the week and it was never very busy. We had it to ourselves at sunset one night and again at 9:30 am when we were sipping the complimentary iced coffee on the deck. If you are celebrating a special occasion or even staying here for your honeymoon or before your wedding, I would definitely consider getting a photographer to get some cute couples shots on the rooftop because talk about an amazing view at sunset. Wine hour every night from 5-6 pm in the lobby had surprisingly good wine options and came with a little cheese and cracker appetizer. The hot coffee in the morning was pretty watery and my only complaint, but they also had iced coffee which was much better. Location: could not be better. 1/2 block to state street which is the main drag and a very lovely pedestrian only promenade. We walked to some awesome restaurants (Sama Sama, Apna Indian, all the restaurant stalls in Santa Barbara Public Market). Service: excellent. All questions answered quickly. We did not have any issues. Everyone we encountered was super friendly and helpful. Restaurant: we did not eat at Finch and Fork because there were just so many restaurants in downtown Santa Barbara that we wanted to check out, but we were always surprised how busy it was and definitely had a good vibe. Bottom line: definitely our new favorite weekend getaway hotel. We will be back! read more
