From the begining I had an idea of what I wanted my kitchen and living area to look like... But it was her patience in countless design sessions that helped bring the renovation to fruition. What caught me off guard was the intricacy of the her tile work in my master bath. When I saw her renderings I was just shocked with the level of detail... It felt like art and transformed a very ordinary bathroom into something everyone can appreciate. It's clearly one of her greatest skills from what I can tell. Previously I had visited two other companies and both times found them to be impersonal and impatient : ( I don't think of myself as demanding, but when your dream remodel is on the line you want to feel that sense of satisfaction that it was done right! Carolyn SAVED my project! She spent about one year working on a 2 unit building renovation project…read more Without Carolyn my project could have dragged even longer. I had a horrible contractor (unfortunately, i found out too late and just had to finish the project with him). Thankfully, Carolyn dealt with him (very professionally and not rocking the boat to just get my project done) and pretty much saved my project from being missed managed by the contractor. Carolyn went above and beyond as a designer. Not only does she have an excellent design instinct but she pretty much managed the project and did not drop the ball or miss any details of my project. And most of all Carolyn managed my "wallet" with integrity and honesty. Carolyn was very realistic in terms of what we wanted and the overall cost. She communicated everything very clearly and would tell me everything that is coming down the pipeline in terms of all the purchases that were made on my credit card. She very careful when handling the money, because she returned everything that was over ordered (like tiles). She also followed up with vendors to make sure I was credited for the return (lighting). One place ( West Elm) gave me a store credit (which I would not use) of a ridiculous amount for lights and she keep calling for the return to be credited to my cc account instead. She keep track of all of the spending/ purchases and returns. She spent a lot of time at the project site making sure the finishes were installed properly and aesthetically pleasing. Carolyn is one of the VERY VERY few people I know that truly looks after my (as the client) best interest. I also believed that she probably protected me from all the crap the contractor tried pull on the project. She was involved in almost all aspect of the remodeling project. We went to her after comparing quotes from different dealers. She went with great details that compared semi-custom cabinet proposals (look and quote) and full-customize cabinet proposals (look and quote) in order to balance our budget and design. It is much easier for us to make final kitchen decisions thanks to these efforts! Linlin visited our site 3 times for measurements, material selection, and after -sale service.  Thanks for her very detailed effort, no design mistakes in our full-customized kitchen cabinet (We do have very specific demand on  different-cabinets-aligning-door-split-look and highly customized 4 rounded island designs). She double checked every detail of our fully customized drawings in the designing stage, which prevent mistakes in the installation. We heard a lot of errors and dramas in building new homes caused from careless from the front design stage, and are glad we experienced none. Linlin is always there for the after-sale service. The manufacturer shipped us the wrong hinge model for one cabinet arm. She spent time with us verifying the correct model, and quickly requested for us new arms for free.  Again, I highly recommend Linlin, who helps our dream-kitchen-to-a-reality process much easier and pleasant. She showed me numerous patterns, materials, design ideas(including photos, examples), allowing the overall decision-making process super easy. She is also a designer who is quite creative. I remember I first chose one specific tile as the flooring. However, after hearing her suggestions, I ended up using it as a wall tile instead, and I couldn't be happier with the result. We thought we were going to have to gut 4 bathrooms and the kitchen but instead Jacqueline suggested some cosmetic changes that made an enormous improvement and saved thousands of dollars. As a result we were able to purchase many new pieces of furnishings and had money left over for landscaping which she made all of the recommendations for and did not charge for the consult of the landscape. This was my experience 8 months ago, and I am STILL trying to get back some of my deposit. She arrived the day of staging with too little furniture, dirty rugs, and outdated oak furniture for an updated house - totally unacceptable. Although she offered to settle for 1/3 of the deposit 6 months ago, she is still citing lack of cash flow for her inability to return any of the money she did not earn. We will wind up in court.

I first used Design Matters in 2020 for a kitchen remodel. I really liked the designer's…read moresuggestions and knowledge of materials and suppliers. However, there were several problems along the way including mis-measuring the size of the sink (causing me additional return fees and time), not enough tile ordered for the backsplash (causing a week delay during construction), and not ordering the correct number of door knobs/drawer pulls (causing further delay in the completion of the project). When I started to plan for a bathroom remodel earlier this year my first thought was to select the materials on my own without the help of a designer. After visiting a few tile stores, I was overwhelmed and decided to use Design Matters again. Although the issues with the kitchen remodel were frustrating, I gave them the benefit of the doubt as that was during a heightened Covid period and the designer did not visit my kitchen to determine the details as often as they probably would have otherwise. I met with the designer at the Los Gatos showroom in the end of June to discuss materials, colors, and tile layout. I was not able to find a new vanity by that time, so the designer said she would look into one and get back to me with a suggestion. She did place the orders for the tile. However, after two months, and with the contractor starting in two weeks, I had not received any follow up on the vanity, design plans, paint colors, etc. I emailed the designer and received a response that she was out of the office and after several back-and-forth emails, over a week later I finally received the design information that was overdue. However, Design Matters completely dropped the ball on the new vanity and at that point there was no time to order one before the contactor started. No apology, suggestions, or alternatives were ever offered. Most frustrating was the lack of follow-through on the tile order. Design Matters had ordered tile from Porcelanosa in early July that was to take 8-12 weeks to arrive. Porcelanosa informed Design Matters of a two to three month shipping delay. Without any communication with me, with Design Matters told Porcelanosa it would not be an issue, even though they were aware of my construction start date. Not only did Design Matters not inform me of this delay, they offered absolutely no assistance or suggestions on how to solve the issue. Luckily for me, the staff at Porcelanosa was wonderful and were able to rush a new order for the tile with expedited shipping. Of course, I had to pay significant amount of money for the additional order and expedited shipping; again, without any remedy or assistance from Design Matters. I did like the design suggestions provided by Design Matters; however, the lack of follow up, accurate material ordering, or follow-through on the ordering caused me significant additional costs and time. I would not recommend Design Matters and will certainly not use their services in the future.

Update: Julie responded to my review on another platform. She did not dispute her numerous mistakes…read morepicking and ordering materials, or her refusal to deliver complete plans, or her refusal to estimate costs. She instead claimed that doing the job correctly was actually a premium feature that cost extra (beyond the $10,700 we paid), so it was our responsibility to find and correct her mistakes, and that she should have even billed us an extra $6,000 for time spent correcting her own mistakes. This also meant she claimed to have made $6,000 worth of mistakes on a $10,700 job. She then threatened to get lawyers involved in retaliation for this review, even though all that was needed was a sincere apology and a promise to improve. I originally gave her 3 stars and a balanced review in the hope she would improve, but her response made me doubt that she will.
