Our intentions were serious. We weren't looking for a freebie tour. I worried that Craig Siphers (the listing broker for the property) must get curiosity calls a lot. We only fell in love harder once Craig arrived within an hour and took us inside and showed us the stately, old-fashioned rooms while giving us a backstory that only he could know. It was like a mini-saga starting from the present & going back in time to the brothers who came out to the Bitterroot valley and saw the potential for an apple-orchard venture at a time when gold and timber were the buzz words of the day. The fact the mansion was designed by architect A.J. Gibson, whose classic buildings like the courthouse are still the highlights of Missoula, just made it more of a privilege to be inside this so-called "home," walking through the grand rooms which had seen 100 years of memories. Though he never got sentimental, Craig's own memories were among them, as his family had lived there at one point, too. It must be hard to show the house repeatedly to strangers who are sometimes just looky-lous or who make disparaging remarks. But he didn't treat us any differently than if we'd rolled up in a Jaguar with checkbook in hand instead of our dusty Subaru with two dogs in the back. He took us down to the cellar, with its water that flows straight under the house, and up to the attic, where he told us a story about lightning and a tree top that I still remember. I can't think of a single time where visiting a house through an unknown broker/realtor had such an impact on me. So I would recommend this entire Bitterroot branch of EXIT, based on that particular experience with Craig Sipher, the broker. (And I am sorry we couldn't, in the end, become the next memories for the mansion.)
