The ascent to the top can be taxing if you take the pathway that includes the stairs. I would recommend taking one of the trails up to pace yourself and enjoy the journey to the scenic views. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the legendary Landscape Architect who also designed New York's Central Park, and the grounds for Stanford...the impressive list goes on. You really get the impression that this park was thoughtfully designed and planned to harmonize with the native species of plants. There are two Belvederes where you can view the city. We ventured up to Kondiaronk Belvedere and were treated to sweeping views of the city. If you are looking for a postcard-perfect view of Montreal, this is it! Mount Royal Park is a must-do and was definitely one of the highlights of our Canadian trip. Don't miss this park, it's immersive qualities are outstanding and your are rewarded with incredible views if you persevere to the top!

Warning: Be Prepared for Pain for Up to 5 Days Afterwards…read more The park was lovely with lovely rolling hills and picnic areas, and I could see the fish in the ponds at the edges. There were paved paths up the hill to the top of the park. It was a lot of hilly inclines but there were a few benches along the way. At the top at the chalet, there is a nice view of Montreal over the trees. There is a large building up the stairs where you can go down the stairs to the bathrooms. We took the stairs all the way down to McGill University and down more hills to our hotel farther in the city. Chatgpt said there is between 339 to 525 steps depending on how you come out. I was totally amazed as you turn the corner, how many other flights of steps there were. There is no way, I would have made it up the stairs. The wooden stairs were of the same color, no color stripe marking the edges, so for someone with progressive glasses, it made it hard to see where each step ended to go to the next one. I looked more to the edges to see the outline to know. I would have really have hated taking the stairs in the dusk when it was darker or overcast. When we sightsee, I can walk 20,000 - 25,000 steps a day; however with that number of stairs then all the hills from McGill University down to our hotel, my legs felt it that night. The next day, my calves were badly cramping and knotted up for several days afterwards, so I am glad we visited at the end of our trip, not at the beginning. It took 5 days before I could walk without pain. If you decide to go, make sure you do it at the end of your trip or your calves and legs are really stretched out and strong.

About an hours drive from Montreal, armed with directions from a friend who plays gigs all over…read moreQuebec, we found what we'd been looking for. A regional park with almost no one around, a suspension bridge looming over water crashing and shushing past fat boulders. A river coming down a low old mountain in the sun. The hike on the managed paths goes up one side to a suspension bridge then back down the other side and takes all of about 15 minutes, but you can slip off the paths easily to step into the dangerous but hugely beautiful current. In August the water is as warm as it'll get rolling down from the icey stretches up wherever it begins, and it's in these sunny little hollows where locals know to sit like it's a hot tub in a running river, coolers perched on the yellow rocks, beers perched on their bellies, puppies playing in the waves, nothing but smiles and friendly nods for miles. Apparently there are 2 or 3 different entrances to the park, and the east side is more popular with a more sculpted beach. So far we stick to the quieter side. On final note - beware of Google Mapping this, it tried to send us to an office near a municipal park instead of the regional - in other words, we pulled up at a hockey rink in a very small town, very confused. Just make sure you're following the road signs for the regional park and you'll be fine... and it's a pretty area to get lost in anyhow.

La Baie Bike Path - A very funny parc

    La Baie Bike Path

Cool and funny…read more La Baie is a borough that was created back in 1976 by the combination of several small villages. It's now actually part of the town of Sanuenay but enjoys it's separate identity. Sort of a confusing place and it you ask someone exactly where you are you just might get several different answers. La Baie sits on the edge of the Baie des Ha! Ha! Yep, that's it's real name. Apparently the first explorers thought they were going up a large river but when the inlet really didn't go anywhere everyone had a good laugh. Or something. The village is pretty cool with great scenery in all directions, but to make it even cooler, the village has a great bike path that runs along the Bale des Ha! Ha! and into the center of town. You can use the bike path to get to the great La Baie Maritime museum or to see the crazy pyramid that they have there. A very unusual place. The path isn't particularly long but they keep it in great shape. Not an easy feat considering the nasty weather that cracks and heaves the surface. All the people I met along the way were very friendly and benches are placed along the way for folks to sit and enjoy the view. The weather was pretty nippy so I didn't see many bikes but I did see a lot of dog walkers and people jogging. This is fiddle country and I met several people playing fiddles and other instruments not far from the path and I saw some other people dressed in antique clothing. They definitely dance to their own music up there and don't give a ruatbaga what other people think. This isn't the longest, faster or most impressive bike path I have ever been on, but for sheer beauty of the scenery and the fascinating and friendly people I met, certainly one of the most interesting.
