I know this is a sort of place, as with Barney's or a Louis Vuitton, where ladies go to shop for quaint $2000 baby strollers and other such expensive, imported baby bric-a-brac. Upscale, in other words. You know, the kind of place where one of everything is placed strategically on a shelf, lit ever-so-delightfully. The store's wares scream "Buy Me! I'm So Worth The Price!" I love this kind of shopping. Now, being Raleigh, NC, one would presuppose that the nature of the staff would be one of relative warmth and friendliness. Oh, was I in for a shock. I used to work in a very upscale women's boutique in a very high-end retail environ of Memphis, so I know the ropes.... Lots of needy clients who require all the attention the staff can provide, and a lot of mental champagne to make the experience and the expense worthwhile. So I was a bit taken aback when I walked in and the young lady behind the counter did not greet me, or even acknowledge my presence. There were several other women in the store looking around, and I assume they waltzed in to the same chilly energy I did. Who knows. For the record, I was not dressed in a burlap sack. I'm a stylish kind of gal, and a nice gal to boot. At any rate, I made my way around this adorable little baby place looking for the right gift, and found myself with my nose in a cute little baby book. Missy behind the counter still said nothing, until.... The She-Beast (I assume the owner or manager) comes from the back of the store and announces to all: "Does anyone need anything?? Can we assist you?!" Then, before I can take my nose out of the book I am looking at as a potential gift, the She-Beast looks at me and says, rather bullishly, "You There! With the book! Do you need any help??" Without batting an eye, I say, in my little way: "No... me here - with the book - I'm just fine." After about five seconds of stoic silence, laughter erupts in the store at my response, even from chilly little Missy behind the counter. The She-Beast quickly removes herself to the rear of the store, not to be seen again. I bought the book, but I'll never return. I hope others who patronize this store are greeted and treated with far more pleasure than I experienced.

I'm posting this in hopes that nobody else has to deal with this mind-blowingly terrible customer…read moreservice. If I could give them negative stars I would. So here's why you should avoid Janie & Jack's Raleigh location if you want to be treated like a human being. I returned a small hat that I bought for my daughter because it didn't fit her. Upon returning the item (the same-day), return was processed, and the money that I spent was refunded to another card that I am not the owner of, in error. When I brought this up to the staff, they refused to correct the mistake and told me they could do nothing for me. They directed me to their customer service corporate number that also informed me because it was an in-store return that they could also do nothing to help me get the refund corrected and on my card, so neither the location or the corporate office were willing to return the money to me that I spent there. They essentially stole my money and refused to do anything about it. Pure insanity. They hid behind "systems limitations" in correcting it, but also offered any other recourse at all. After repeated attempts to resolve this, I was spoken to rudely by three separate employees at the location and also hung up on by one employee at the location after telling me, they can do nothing for me. Stop calling. This is easily the worst customer service experience of my life and I would caution anybody from ever doing business with the Raleigh, North Carolina location. The pure and utter indifference and frankly hostile attitude for refunding my money was baffling. It's basically like if I got an item from them and paid the store next door then couldn't understand why they think I should pay them. Anyways, what an awful place. Stay away.

Then I remembered it wasn't my baby and headed over to Janie and Jack. Gorgeous traditional clothes, layettes and accessories with a staff knowledgable about sizing. It is pricey but if you size up a season you can find steals. I found a hand knit romper and silver Mary Janes for under $20. The store is neatly laid out unlike the chaos that is Gymboree where the shoppers behave like that last pair of teddy bear print tights was the antidote to the poison they just swallowed.

It was a few miles from our AirBNB, so while we had to drive, there's a large parking lot right across the street. I'm not sure if parking is normally free, but it was on this particular Saturday. No one was monitoring the gate or could figure out how to pay, so we didn't. I *think* the sign said it was normally $5 on days they do charge or monitor. VERY reasonable. The museum itself is FREE unless you want to see an IMAX movie, which is reasonably priced. If you're into dinosaurs, plants, geology, or natural science in general, you'll enjoy yourself here, but the museum definitely adds a local flare and incorporates NC history and geography. While the museum is kid-friendly, it is not kid-focused. It is family focused and for all ages. My husband and I are child-free and had a great time. Of course, we are nerds and had science classes together in college. I do think this is a great museum for kids who are school aged and able to read well and ask questions. It is probably not the best option for toddlers or preschoolers when it comes to museums. The museum hosts birthday parties, and a group was there for that- what a fun idea! If you visit, plan to spend a morning or afternoon here- it definitely takes a few hours to see everything but not the full day.

We met at 10am right when they opened. We easily found street parking and since it was on a Sunday, it was free to park. The museum is huge! I was so surprised by how large and open it was. All of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable here. We interacted with an employee in the whale exhibit and he was fantastic. The museum is incredibly clean and well maintained. There's so much to see and do. You can easily spend over 2 hours here. I especially loved the geology section, taxidermy/skulls room, and my favorite...the dueling dinosaurs!! It was SO incredible watching paleontologists work on this massive fossil. This part of the museum absolutely made it to be a wonderful experience. This is a great museum and it's free! I donated a little to the museum and also made a few purchases, one being a magnet and another being a beautiful $75 sulfite mineral. This was definitely worth our time and I'm so happy we finally visited!
